This is actually a pretty cool add-on from Exetel. I still have my reservations about Exetel as a company but I do like the flexibility this provides.

    • I agree. I was on the verge of switching to exetel earlier today due to the numerous addons and options they have available.

Ulitimately, I decided to switch to More and make the most of my commbank rewards. I just wasn't willing to risk the hassles involved with unstable internet and poor customer service. Especially, given that their last 10 years of average review ratings were consistently <2.5 out of 5. I mean, to be that bad for that long, is almost only possible if the company leadership wanted it that way.

Never say never though. If exetel maintains their current level of offerrings and has genuinely improved during the next 12 months, I would certainly be willing to give it a go.

      • +1

Been with Exetel for 3 years and found them to be great, no issues at all and always get my plan speed. Haven't really needed customer service but did upgrade to unlimited last week as I was on an old 500GB/month plan and got offered a 6 month discount price for upgrading even though I didn't ask for it so found them to be helpful when needed. Previously with iinet for 10 years and just changed for the savings with Exetel and my speed remained the same but saved me $20/month.

        • +2

I'm glad you got great service and if I was guaranteed the same experience as you, I would switch in a heart beat. The problem is over a 10 year data sample, the chances of me getting the same experience as you is unlikely. Even if I was trying to be optimistic and look at just the most recent reviews, they are currently <2 / 5. Plus, I have to let them know 30 days in advance if I wish to change service. These days I just don't have the energy to experiment so I'm afraid I just can't take that leap of faith.

          • +2

@LostArchives: Where are you reading this review? maybe I need to drop a 5 Star.

I've been with Exetel since 2010 back on ADSL and now on FTTN
Haven't had any major issues, any issues that have required a call have been quickly answered. No long wait times and support is pretty helpful.
Otherwise there's a guy on Whirlpool who is also helpful, even after hours.

The only thing is they only support their modems, if you BYO you're on your own. Which I can only imagine would be a nightmare, as their support team would need to know everything about other devices.

            • @TieNN89: @TieNN89 you can have a look for yourself in the exetel OzB page under reviews

Too late for me anyway. Already signed with More and besides I'm using my own modem.

              • @LostArchives: ever since Superloop bought them out, theyve been really good now

              • @LostArchives: Caution with More. I have tried them twice to save money.. poor gaming and video conferencing. Their support arent all that great.

Switched to my Launtel service and back to normal. Same kit and all fttp.

Hopefully ypur experience is better but if it isnt be sure to cancel prior to the end of your billing month or they sting you for a full month and no refunds.

            • @TieNN89: using BYO routers/modems is not difficult at alls. usually either no setup or very minimal setup from your end of configuration less than like 5 text boxes lol. It's not complicated at all to use yo own router/modem. good to bring yo own for good connection with them wifi 6 and ax and what not

          • @LostArchives: I've also been with exetel for 3yrs, pretty rock solid service the whole time.
I'm only just now swapping to superoop for gigabit.
There might be a common denominator with those who leave bad reviews, maybe one of the bundled routers suffered overheating issues or something that made the service unreliable - the router Optus sent me back in the day would overheat and reset.
Honestly there's basically nothing the ISP has power over that can affect service, if it's cabling, that's NBN, which I also had issues with while with Optus.
I wouldn't hesitate to go with exetel if you have your own router or know what you're getting is decent

      • +2

Reading reviews for ISPs are super biased and a poor sample space overall, majority of reviews are only left because people have issues, hardly anyone takes the time to leave a review if they have a decent experience

        • Yes, on their own they don't say much, that is why one should compare to other ISPs avg reviews.

      • +2

I was with more for 6 months before moving to Exetel (2nd month now). More was atrocious, terrible ping and constant dropouts (no notice), terrible customer service and portal. The experience was not even worth the 30% off. Exetel on the other hand had been flawless, low and stable latency, no dropouts other than scheduled maintenance that was informed beforehand.

Tangerine was better than more in terms of stability, but the customer service was equally bad, since they’re basically sister companies.

I came from tpg, superloop, mate, tangerine, more and now Exetel. So I’ve been with a couple providers

      • FYI, Exetel has been taken over by Superloop and their internet is great. They just recently increased the price and I will be now switching to More.

How is your experience with More? How is the latency to servers in Asia?

      • No one gives a review if their internet just works though.

      • I'm with More also just because of the CBA discount, I wouldn't say it is stellar, more just 'I can put up with it due to the cheap price'. When I first had it connected, I had constant dropouts for a few weeks which admittedly haven't happened since. The supplied modem doesn't work with 5ghz wifi properly, the SSID will show up about 10% of the time so it's basically unusable (and yes I've checked all the settings and it's enabled properly). The portal and invoice/login process is also quite archaic and janky. And on top of all that they raised the price twice since I got it, so paying 15% more almost immediately, it's not quite so much of a great deal.

Nonetheless it's usable enough to keep going until my 3 years 50% discount period is up.

FTTN but not FTTC? What the?

    • -3

      Tech can't support it.

    • They’re working on it and should have FTTC and FTTB available soonish (possibly within a week according to their rep on WP)

Pretty easy to implement the boost via the website, however nearly an hour after i "boosted" my speed is the same if i test on Speedtest.

What i find hilarious is the email they sent confirming the boost:

    Boosted to Speed Tier
    100/40Mbps
    Typical evening speed
    100000Mbps
    Speed boost start
    11:24PM 16 June 2022

I wouldn't mind that typical evening speed!!

    • +1

Same, same I tried earlier this morning and same speed as before BOOST… I pretty much new this, but reassured when I tried as my FTTN is at its limit by the distance away from my premises. Still like Exetel as they are reliable and have had no issue, also like the semi fixed IP that can be changed when required.

      • I'm FttP so distance isn't an issue. Testing it now shows that my upload speed has doubled, but downloads remain the same….
        Oh well.

        • -1

Are you using a cat6 lan cable?
Anything less is capped at 100mbit

          • -1

@Breno785au: Rubbish. Cat 5 is rated to 2.5Gbps and likely to work at higher speeds over short runs too.

    • +1

What speed is your modem syncing at? Not sure if the speed boost forces your modem to resync, a reboot may be what's needed.
May find it always syncs at 100Mbit now and they soft limit it to 50Mbit when not boosted.

I haven't activated speed boost yet so not sure, still synced at 60Mbit. The max my line could handle from the Telecube days of cheap 100Mbit was around 80 something, wonder if it has gotten slightly better after they turned of the analogue lines.

    • For note when you activate the Speed Boost and it's processed (you get the email) you also have to update or resync your connection with NBN at the higher speed.
If you're on HFC for example this means turning the black NBN box on and off at the power point.
You don't need to turn off your router, this will auto sync (assuming it's capable of the higher speeds and your cabling is also up to scratch).

      • Never had to restart the black box. Not true.

      • I just did a speed boost with exetel and did not need to restart anything.

    • I found my laptop had some driver issues that were limiting my speed to 10 Mbps when I went to a friend's house and he was getting much faster speeds with the same connection type and everything. Before I worked that out I had the same experience as you with speed boosts.

I also find speed boosting is annoying cause it drops my connection to enact it.

  • +5

What a cool idea, 9/10 times i'm not doing anything intensive with my internet, but the times I am hyperdownloading stuff it would be greatly needed.

    • -1

So basically you just need the boost during your porno binge sessions

  • +2

Boosted mine at 7pm. An hr later same speeds as before. Called support. They said it’s a known issue and their techs were working on it.
Happened to check at 1am. (Up with new baby)
And getting boosted speeds now. Didn’t reboot modem.

    Maybe just early teething issues.
    Pretty awesome idea imo.

  • +1

Will this trigger free the free fttp upgrade for fttn ?

    • +3

No it won't. Use this form for FTTP.

    • No - you have to meet other criteria such as a speed increase request to trigger that if it’s available for your area

  • +1

I've been with Exetel since the ADSL days and only had the internet drop out twice but that was over 15 years ago.
I have FTP and have 100/40 and get 119Mbps on speedof.me for downloads. A few years back I did notice throttling on steam downloads and turning on a VPN fixed it but haven't seen it since.

I had a Netgear R7000 router running ddwrt and remember having 147 days connected in the logs before I switched to a pfsense box. I think it was only that low due to blackouts.

    Highly recommend Exetel.

    • Lucky you, i get a dropout with exetel at least once a fortnight.

      • In Sydney CBD, and the connection will drop in and out for the whole evening once a month or so.

        • Log a call with Exetel and get them to investigate it. Our FTTP Exetel service is rock solid and doesn't drop in and out (at least not that impacts my usage). How long are your drop outs for?

  • Damn, wish this was available for Opticomm plans

  • why nbn ultrafast at Exetel only 500Mbps?

    • Because they don’t want to overpromise. I think telstra has 250 max.
I could only get 600 on FTTP on a 1gig connection anyway.

    • I'm on currently on the 250 plan and when I speed boost I get 800-900Mbps. Did my free FTTP upgrade with them and it went flawlessly.

  • Nothing for FTTC?

  • Exetel are having a lot of teething issues.
I recommend you wait before trying this.

I switched this on in the middle of the day yesterday. Went from 50Mbit connection to 0.2Mbit connection.
They say it takes up to 15min to activate. Had to hotspot via my phone for the rest of the work day.

Rang support at about 5:30pm and surprising someone picked up very quickly. 30 mins later after a few reboots, a change of IP address and reset of voip I was back and running at 100Mbit down.

  • I have to give thumbs up to Exetel, been 3 years with them on HFC 50m for $60, never had any issue except a few disruptions due to weather and the cost remains the same. always get my plan speed at any time of the day.

    • +1

How the hell have you kept the price at $60?

I've been with them for four years. Started at $59, then $69 and now they're asking for $79 by the end of this month. Thinking of jumping ship tbh.

  • That’s pretty sick. Was a exetel customer for a year but my financial circumstances changed; been hopping around since but they are very stable

  • I tested this this morning, had to reboot modems before the down speed boosted.

  • -1

I don't get the use-case for this though? Like why wouldn't you just get the better speed all the time if you need it?

    • +1

Downloading a big file or game or something. One time increase of speed, you can watch or play faster.

    • +2

I am with Launtel and I rarely need anything beyond 25/5.

      I change tier when:

      • I need to upload something
      • I need to download a game quickly
      • Family visits
      • Streaming/screen sharing
      • Haven't done this yet - remote use of my Plex Server(full of Linux ISOs)
    • +1

Ultimately it's a nice bit of marketing. Differentiate from other ISPs and some might never have tried speeds above 50Mbit and Exetel might get some permanent upgrades.

My FTTN line isn't capable of more than around 85 anyway so don't want to pay more than the ~$60 I do now for 50Mbit but I'll take 5 free days of faster internet. Was good back in the Telecube days of 100Mbit for $69 but not enough difference for me to pay more than that.

    • If you have few freinds and thier kids visit your home then u switch it on

    • Only play PC on weekends. Good time to boost

  • Anyone on a Opticom estate able to get the speed boost?

I cant seem to find the option in My Exetel on my phone web browser..

    • nbn only.

  • +2

Comment on FTTB / FTTC from GlennW (Exetel Rep) on Whirlpool:

FTTB and FTTC are work in progress.

No ETA at this stage but "soon" (think days/week'ish)

    https://whrl.pl/RgrFVT

  • Not that happy with Exetel as an NBN provider. Service is okay, however, I experience considerable ping.
Rang up to cancel my service, however, you have to provide a 30-day notice to cancel. As the general process to switch providers is to contact your new ISP first, connect with them then cancel your previous service, however then to say you cannot do this is grossly unfair.

I see no other reason for this than to penalise people wanting to switch away from Exetel.

Unfortunately, I've had to wait out my 30-day period, and delay my new ISP service.

    • TPG does this too, wasted $60 when I switched but TPG still charged me for the month :(

  • +2

Been with Exetel for 20 years now since they opened in 2001. A few minor hiccups here and there but wouldn't go anywhere else. Tech support is far superior and their automated systems and customer portal is way ahead of any other RSP. Tick all the boxes for me and recommend them to clients, family and friends.

  • FYI: Speed Boost for FTTC is now rolling out.

  • great

  • Tested this on the weekend on my 50/20 plan but speeds didn't change at all, even tho website stated boost was activated. Internet dropped out 10mins after activation and also restarted the modem with no change.

    • What did Exetel say when you lodged a call with them about it? You did lodge a call didn’t you?

    • The rep is active on Whirlpool, you can drop a comment on the thread or PM him your customer ID and they'll likely get it sorted.

  • So i clicked on activate speed boost and it disconnected my nbn instead. Tech support has no clue how to fix it and just hung up on me

  • Recently joined Exetel and I am on HFC 50/20. Speed Boost worked fine for me when i tried it.Got a speed test result of double my usual speed but i had to reboot my router before it worked properly.

I think this is a really innovative feature from Exetel.

If you have a lot of people staying at your house over the weekend for example or if you need to download huge GB's then this can come in handy.

    • FTTP or FTTN?

  • Enabled speed boost on existing fttp 100mbps plan to 250mbps. Only got 140mpbs max. Not even close to 250

    • It’s working for me - 100/40 boosts to 250/25 and that is the actual speed I get
Have you logged a call with Exetel?

      • I was actually getting any speed boost at all. I was only getting around 100mbps abd then i called tech support and he made some changes and i started to get 140mbps. Still far from 250mbps. I am using netgear d7800 modem and cat 5e cable. Maybe i try calling them again

        • I’m on fttp and can get around 270 mbps when I boost from 100/20

          • +1

@Joshminey: Good chance something wrong on my side or my settings not done right

  • Avoid like the plague. We pay our account on time and they often just disconnect the service - payment not received. When you call them they suddenly find the payment. Not worth the trouble. (It looks bad for superloop, who own them now!)

    • Certainly not my experience with Exetel - I’ve been using them since 2004 for a variety of connection technologies and most recently for NBN - rock solid service, performance and reliability

      • Same, since 2004, rock solid.

I however did recommend them a friend about 10 years ago who wasn't that tech savvy and she ended overpaying quite a bit from not understanding their technical emails about changing plans or suffer. So I recommend ABB to anyone like this.

    • Havent faced this issue, my card gets debited without any issues for years

    • not a fan of their payment system either. They've always received my payments but the amount owing is very confusing, it shows $0 even when the bill is issued.

      • The $0 extra bill is for your VoIP service. That's why you get two bills per month. You can call them and disconnect it and you won't get them anymore

        • not sure I follow, as I don't see any reference to VoIP on the account overview page. I receive one bill per month for my NBN subscription.

The account page should show amount owing from all services I'm subscribed to once bill has been issued or show upcoming payments. even the text on the site is misleading on the Pay Your Account page says "Your current amount due is $0." and shows the same under Account Overview page.

I don't believe it should behave this way, once the bill is issued to me account which it is at this moment, should update that value to whatever value I am due to owe, like all other services (credit cards for example).

I like Exetel, just their billing has been difficult to follow for me if I want to pay it manually for meeting credit card limits.

          • @nicolascage: I know, I called them yesterday as I get my normal bill and a $0 every month at different times. They said it was for VoIP PAYG, I had no idea about this as bill doesn't say that.

  • +1

    Such a gimmick

  • +1

    Superloop offers the same

    • Same company I think

    • They're the same company. Superloop bought Exetel.

    • Not the same boost as tabled above. My boost speed from a 250/25 is 1000/50 (though on HFC to tops somewhere between 700-800).

The mobile app I activate seems to be from the Exetel purchase as it has all the branding. Anyone else have different boost a speed?

  • Too bad there’s still no synchronous gigabit yet for residential use.
We’re even willing to pay business prices if you don’t artificially require us to pay a shit ton more for business features we don’t even need. Just give use the gigabit of upload. PLEASE!!!!!

  • 6 monthly churn between superloop and exetel looks the go

    • I just churned from Exetel to Superloop. Exetel were great, but churned to Superloop for $85 cashrewards and $20 discount per month for 6 months (compared to rate-rise coming 3 July).

      • whate rate-rise? SUperloop or Excetel or both?
I'm considering churning from Superloop to Excetel

        • Both - same company, same pricing. Have a look at their plan offerings - most plans going up by $5/month.
if you sign up before 2 July, you get the current pricing.

  • -1

bloody speed boost, …..just be fast all the time!!!!!!!

    • +2

      Better pay up then

  • +1

changed to them a few mths ago. 250/25 FTTP and boost speed is now listed as 1000/50

  • -2

Exetel is shocking, the speed boost is unreliable sometimes takes forever to activate and the internet becomes very unstable ie disconnects all the time. The time I was with them I literally never used the speed boost because of problems. The 30 day cancellation notice is also one of the scummiest t&cs.
Customer service is also non existent. Avoid.

    • I’ve no issues with Exetel. Hardly had a dropout, always notified of network downtime. Have no use for the speedboost because standard service is very reliable. The cancellation period is to the end of the billing period (essentially end of the month). Give notice to cancel, get you cancellation date, request new service connection for the same date. Simples.
