Does anyone know why this thing is still more expensive than the same one 3 years ago?

    • +4

      https://www.rba.gov.au/education/resources/explainers/inflation-and-its-measurement.html#:~:text=Inflation%20is%20an%20increase%20in,(a%20situation%20called%20deflation).

      • +2

I wouldn't have thought portable vacuum cleaner to be able to retain its value and have depreciation that is slower than inflation.

Given that since 2019, they have released like 3 new versions.

        • +3

It’s not that a vacuum retains its value. It is the dollars getting cheaper.

        • i bought xiaomi robot vac gen1 with laser navi / smart mapping , about 5 years ago for $280

what is the current cheapest robovac with laser guidance + smart mapping ?

    • +4

I think maybe because they're still selling it and still not many comparable stick vacuum cleaners with the same quality, customer care, suction power, etc…

    • Even cheaper when ebay plus launched

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/386244

Although having had mine since then I've had to spend money on a new battery

      • How old was your unit when you replaced the battery?

        • +1

2 years - started using the v10 in August 2018 and from my emails I can see I ordered a new (official) battery in August 2020. At 22 months old the replacement battery still seems to be holding charge quite well.

          • @millso: That sounds very short. Did you take it to Dyson to see if it was covered?

Did the battery die or you felt that it held too little charge?

            • @juns: No that would be quite typical. Battery is considered a consumable, LifeSpan will vary a lot from customer to customer.
Given the chemistry used, they really need to be kept charged and avoid running flat.
That being said, replacement would be < $150 and give the machine a new lease of life.
I think <$70 for the smaller machines, but battery on a v10 is quite large.

              • @UltimateAI: Sure, but I have owned one unit for 3 years+. The battery was never a problem or at least I haven't noticed any degradation.

The only problem I had was the trigger broke after 2 years and a bit. Apparently it's a small plastic in the inside. That being said, Dyson fixed it for me for free and replaced the entire plastic body with the V11 ones (cause they're identical).

            • @juns: To be honest I can't remember wholly, but recollect too little charge - basically my gauge was not being able to get through the whole house when I used to (or even half way).

          • +2

@millso: I believe their batteries have 2 year warranty as per their website. They replaced mine free at 23.5 months a few weeks ago.

            • @U4333439: Not exactly mine has been out of warranty for 8 months already and they replaced my charger and battery last week.

              • @nobby148: Wish i'd have known this! Ah well - it was $130 some two years ago, if this battery fails within the next month the two year period hopefully applies to that!

              • @nobby148: my battery starting causing issues after about 20 months but i got mine as a factory second and warranty was only 12 months. I called them to try my luck but they said no i would have to pay for new battery, i told them to get sucked.

            • @U4333439: I think I just missed this by the time it was needed - having purchased in June 2018 and needing the battery in August 2020 =(

              • +1

@millso: Fair enough. Make sure to set an alert for the next 2 year anniversary! :) I think they said the batteries should last a minimum of 6min on my v8. May be similar benchmark for the v10.

    • +2

Maybe silicon shortages and labour/supply chain issues?

    • increase in costs, materials, labour, shipping, insurance, rental etc, inflation, a lot of appliances increased their RRP as well

      • The LG C1 seems to be steadily going down though.

        • +1

New TV comes out yearly by 6+ brands with 6 different models each manufacturers, they have much tougher competition than handheld vacuum cleaners and being tech market, they either lower their margins or end up storing all the old stuff in the warehouse.

  • +3

hmm you can get V8 for $390, is double the price worth it for extra 2Vs??

    • +1

where is the v8 for $390?

    • It's diminishing marginal return… So subjective to your own situation. 2 V8s wouldn't suck as much as 1 V10 though. Also bigger bin and the extra attachments for absolute + vs animal version.

      • +12

        I’d rather a suck from a 10/10 than two 5/10s…..

        • +1

          Beggars can't be choosers.

    • +2

      Dyson V15 also double the price of V10, is V15 worth 4 x V8?
It really depends what you want or need, Dyson V10 has 150 AW, V8 has 115 AW. Do you need more suction from V10? For hardfloor, 115 AW is pretty enough. For carpet/mattress ect the more suction the better. In addition, Using the right head/tool for vac also should be more effective and efficient.

  • Good deal. Jump on it.

  • -2

Was able to get it for $415 with the cheddar deal $70 sign up bonus and 3% cash back.

    • How does that bring it down so far from $759?

      • that would be more of a V8 price and definitely doesn't sound a v10 price

        • Yeah that's right referring to the V8 2022 version

          • @pizzapock3t: Cheddar had 20% cashback deal not long ago and it was around 390 with sign up bonus

  • +4

The fluffy roller works a charm on tiles

  • +3

Have one of these. Broke twice while under warranty. Warranties up and the battery's dying (bout three years old now).

Don't think I'd buy Dyson again.

    • +1

To counter this view, I had a DC44 for like 6 years still on its original battery and no issues. Upgraded to a V15 6 months ago and no issues so far.

    • Had ours for a few years now, no issues at all. Will definitely buy again.

    • +4

wonder if that is an issue with the newer models? my V6 animal is still going strong for more than 6 years.

    • -1

I bought one thinking it would be good for the whole house. Nope, still had to buy a separate vacuum cleaner too. This is good for smaller incidental jobs.

      • The runtime is 60minutes.
        Stop talking crud.

        • -1

Runtime 60 mins on low, yeah - 20 mins on high. Have you tried vacuming a carpet with it? Gets the stuff off the top, nothing out of the actual weave. But what would I know?

  • +2

I purchased this model and recently the bin opening mechanism broke. There is this little bit of plastic that stops the bin sliding and pops the lid. It's not strong and the plastic broke so when I push the red tab to open the bin the whole plastic bin falls off. I'm buying the Xiaomi Mi vacuums next as they have very good suction and reviews. Also much cheaper. So cheap that I can throw them out and replace them when they wear out. Dyson are too expensive to just throw out. Dyson also forces me to claw grip the trigger to run the vacuum (apparently to save battery life) but my finger gets very sore having to hold the trigger. In the new Dyson model there is a now a big red button to have the vacuum run continuously. The Xiaomi has always been on and off. The Dyson battery life is so short. They claim it has equivalent suction to a mains powered vacuum which is true for all 1 minute or so at full blast. Now that my battery has aged I can't even use full power as it cuts out. Their claimed long run time is with no attachments at lowest power setting which isn't practical.

    • +5

Also much cheaper. So cheap that I can throw them out and replace them when they wear out.

That’s the problem with peoples mentality these days. Buying cheap stuff knowing it won’t last as long so you can just “throw them out and replace them when they wear out” and we end up with 3x the amount of landfill. In the long run you probably spend just as much anyway.

    • +2

Mine broke too and they replaced it without hassle.

    • +1

      dreame v11 = dyson v8 price

      no cheaper

    • +1

Both of my warranty returns were for that same, bin opening breakage. The repairer pretty much knew right away when I walked in what the issue was going to be, so it must have been a pretty common fault. On the second repair, they replaced the entire bin and it hasn't happened again, so maybe there was a design change (thankfully, as I'm now out of warranty).

  • +3

I bought a refurb V10 Animal and it's probably one of the best products I have ever owned. Just wish I had that fluffy roller !!!

  • +1

I just got this for $729 on the recent Dyson/Cheddar cashback deal - with a free extra filter.

I could have got the V8 (and we needed a vacuum) for a lot less but the design of the V6-8 container emptying sytem leaves a lot to be desired. We had a V6 but the wand broke and it was on its third battery - and the emptying latch was knackered. This one comes with a fluffy roller which is great on our hardwood floors and it has a much bigger container.

I'm not an expert on vacuums - and don't aspire to be - and this one does what it says on the tin and works really well. This, with the Miele corded machine we have covers the whole house.

  • I bought a V10 absolute+ direct from Dyson for a family member $719 two years ago and it included a free DOK that I sold on ebay for $150

    Only cost $569

Kind of wish I could get one for that price now that my v6 and trouvers are packing up

  • +1

My V11 had same issue, bin came apart from main body when ejecting, I think it was a few months out of warranty , rang Dyson and a new bin sent out free of charge, hassle free service

    • Mine's out of warranty. I'll try calling Dyson. The problem I had wasn't with the bin, it was with the grey plastic that the bin slid on. There is a hidden plastic bit at the end of that grey plastic slider. The red plastic bit on the bin hits that grey plastic with force which pops the lid open. Without that bit of plastic the bin slides right off. Since the plastic gets hit each time the bin is opened it eventually broke. That grey plastic is attached to the whole body of the unit so it can't be easily replaced.

      • +1

I went through Dyson Chat, explained the problem ' bin falls off when ejecting', all they asked for was the serial number, no proof of purchase necessary and got a new bin attachment sent in the mail. Just had to swap over the battery and tube and good to go.

  • Thanks OP. Been waiting for another sale on the V10.

  • +5

Better to use code SAVE7TB for Ebay Plus users to get 7% off instead of 5%. Brings it down to $743.07.

    • +1

I’m sad now. I’ll update the post.

      • +2

Please update to 'SAVE7TB', currently it's 'PLUS7TB' which is invalid.

        • Looks like a MOD updated it for me - thankyou MOD - thankyou @wackojacko99

        • does SAVE7TB works on v8 $499 ?

  • +3

I just did online chat on the Dyson webpage. Their first message was 2 year warranty. I replied Australian Consumer Law. They asked if I was OK to install the replacement part myself, I said yes. They immediately posted me the replacement part no questions asked, well they asked for the serial number and postage details. Painless process. Thanks for suggesting that I call Dyson. Turns out they have good customer service.

  • +1

I have had the vacuum for few years now, battery is not doing that great but imo it is a better model than the v11 which is very heavy compared to this one (my parents have the v11 and it is noticable difference when doing the whole house). Not as powerful but good enough in my opinion and has a big enough bin unlike the older models.

  • +1

Bought recently for more than this, retiring the V6 animal which is now 7 years old to upstairs. Loving the V10 so far, the biggest issue with the V6 was emptying it, and the size of the canister meant you had to do it a lot. Much easier to empty the larger canister on the V10, though hopefully don't have the issue that some of the others had here. The attachments with this cover pretty much any scenario and it's great to have both the hard and soft floor motorised heads.

    • Do hairs get caught in the roller brush?

      • Yeah they get caught a little but mostly it catches behind the primary roller at the rear of the housing that sits on the ground. So you're essentially creating a hair-dam as you vacuum along.

  • +4

If I glue a laser onto the roller head I can pretend that it's a Dyson V15 Detect.

    • +2

For the authentic experience also send me the $650 odd difference in price.

  • +2

    this or ps5, decision decision.

  • Ive been using the same Dyson stick V8 absolute+ for the last 7 years.. no replacement battery or filter and works like a dream..
best vacuum cleaner, worth every dollar.

  • +1

Don't forget to stack 3% cashback on ebay gift cards via shopback.

  • Isn't this the old V10 model?

  • +1

I just got an email offering $100 off via the Dyson website, where this is listed for $799 (free delivery). So if you're an existing customer you could get this for $699 - check your emails before buying. It's a targeted, one-use code for existing customers so won't be relevant for everyone.

    • +1

doesn't work as the SKU is different.

  • So this is the older version differ from the dyson website on sale for $799 which is the 2022 version. So confusing DYSON

  • +2

Dyson have now added this model to the $100 off code.

Plus 5% off with CR comes down to $668

    • Hmmm this is actually the cheapest price I’ve seen for a V10 to date!
