These are hard to find on discount. $24 on Bing Lee eBay store. Use code SAVE5TB for 5% off, eBay Plus members use SAVE7TB for 7% off, Max $100 off. Can buy in store, click and collect, or delivery. $27 at JB HiFi (will price match). Not sold on Amazon but Amazon does have the non power monitoring smart switch for $18 (normally $24.95).

TP-Link have the Tapo and Kasa smart home ecosystem. Different apps. The big difference is that the Tapo app lets me share devices I choose with other accounts so that they can control the switch. Kasa doesn't let me share a device and instead I have to give the other person my account details. The Tapo app also lets me see the day to day power usage whereas the Kasa app is less informative. iPhone users can download the free third party Watt app which combines control of the Tapo and Kasa power monitoring smart switches. The biggest real world difference between Tapo and Kasa in my experience is that Tapo lets me share control of the devices with others. Tapo also works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri whereas Kasa does not.

I had the exact opposite between the 2 brands. Kasa would show me energy usage and Tapo would not - I ended up refunding all my Tapo gear because I couldn't get energy usage and I couldn't integrate it into Home Assistant.
I did not try the sharing Kasa between devices though as we use Home Assistant to control them.

  • I've used both the Tapo and Kasa energy monitoring smart switches and they work. They both let me see current power usage, daily power usage, weekly power usage, and 30 day power usage. The Tapo app lets me go back to see day by day. The Kasa app does not. However, the free iPhone third party Watt app evens the playing field and I can see the daily power usage for both the Tapo and Kasa smart switches. So the key advantage of Tapo was device sharing and Home Assistant, Siri, and Alexa. Maybe you got the non power monitoring version of the smart switch.

    • What you mentioned is different to what I read online. Do you have the link on how to get Tapo working with Home Assistant? If yes, could you please share?

          Home Assistant is not Google…

          https://www.home-assistant.io/

Another thing is Tapo doesn't support IFTTT. However, if you care about IFTTT, you probably would also care about Home Assistant.

          • @netsurfer: I've never heard of home-assistant.io. I meant Google Home Assistant.

            • +1

@Eatslikeacat: That's why you shouldn't indicate it works fine with Home Assistant. That's one of the main reasons some people avoid Tapo. Generally, Tapo is considered a more cost effective range from TP-Link. Even with the Kasa one, you don't want to upgrade the firmware.

One reason for using Home Assistant for some people is that you don't need cloud to work.

              • @netsurfer: Thanks for the clarification. It does not work with Home Assistant. Never heard of it until now. Open source, way too complicated. I want something that's easy to setup with almost no learning curve. The most flexible one I've used is the Xiaomi ecosystem. With so many battery powered devices I can set up useful automations. When I walk into the room the motion sensor triggers two smart switches to turn lamps on, then when there is no motion for 2 minutes it switches them off. I can set the pool pump not to run on rainy days. I can set the robot vacuum. I can automate the dryer, washing machine, air conditioner. Monitor the mini oven, and power consumption of the fridges. Monitor doors and windows being left open in case it rains and for security. Plus share control of devices with others.

          • @netsurfer: I just checked the Tapo app. It does have automation. When "add trigger" then "add action".

            • @Eatslikeacat: Read up on Home Assistant before you comment further on Home Assistant please. We know add trigger and add action (through app / cloud). Those are fundamental features. If you really know to go get it to work with Home Assistant, we certainly love to know how.

              • @netsurfer: I thought that Google Home Assistant and Home Assistant were the same thing. You have pointed out that they are not. Now there is no further confusion.

        The right answer:
        https://github.com/petretiandrea/home-assistant-tapo-p100

It's a custom repo you can install via HACS and then you add the switches as an "integration"

        • Thanks for this. Wish I have time to try the P110 I got from Telstra. Too many toys yet to open.

    • No, your link is P100, this is P110 - different models

    • The 100 doesn't do the energy monitoring.

I'm going to try these - Tasmota out of the box https://www.athom.tech/blank-1/au-plug

    • Nice form factor.

Thanks for sharing, bought a couple to test.

    • Ive got these except eh ESPHome version, work really well but cover any adjacent sockets

    • Oh wow I've been looking for something like this forever. I'd buy in a heartbeat if they were selling somewhere like eBay or Amazon where there's some buyer protection.

      • Athom sells direct from Australian warehouse

otherwise you can purchase from Aliexpress and use Paypal as a payment method - at least Aliexpress has some buyer protection https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001670435059.html

        • Ah ok gotcha its a bit more expensive on aliexpress.

Does anyone have any experience buying directly from them? Trustworthy? Good customer service? Won’t just take my money and run?

          • +1

@theguwithnoname: I've ordered two today direct from Sydney warehouse to try - will let you know once received. I paid via Paypal so will just raise it with Paypal if they take money and run :)

update: ordered today, just received tracking about 9:20pm

            • +1

@bdl: further update, shipped today, Auspost express post with tracking, so should receive tomorrow!

              • @bdl:

                Auspost express post with tracking

                That's certainly good to hear!

                • +1

@theguwithnoname: Except Australia Post has tripped over their shoelaces and still haven't delivered :( Not as bad as Sendle, but still…

                • +1

@theguwithnoname: …and received just now Melb metro, definitely didn't run away with my money! :)

  • Turns out that if you have eBay Plus then use the code SAVE7TB to take 7% off. SAVET5B for 5% off is for non eBay Plus members.

  • This is good product. But if I remember it right, i got them around $14.50 a piece from Amazon. $22.80 piece is not a bargain in my book :)

About energy monotoring function, you wont use it much as you will be busier with other important stuff. Trust me. Lol

My use case is with spot ceiling lights automation with google or alexa.

  • By the time you pay for shipping and wait for delivery, you might as well just walk in to Jaycar and get one of these?

Im using these aswell. Work fine but i wish i could break down hourly not just daily.

      • Yeah. I wish it could graph hourly

  • For me I'm picking the ecosystem not only the device. For Tapo I can share devices and have Home Assistant. The Kasa ecosystem currently has more devices such as light switches, power boards, and motion detectors. I use the Xiaomi ecosystem as well and it's brilliant, I walk into a room and the motion detector triggers the smart switch, and when there is no motion for 2 minutes it turns the lights off. The motion detector also triggers the IR blaster to turn off the air conditioner when room is empty for 40 minutes. With the humidity sensor if it's too humid (rainy day) then the switch for the pool pump won't turn on (saves solar power for other things). The annoying thing with the Xiaomi ecosystem is that it lags and is sometimes unreliable (probably because of mainland China servers far away). As the Kasa and Tapo ecosystems grow I might be able to do all the things that I can do with the Xiaomi ecosystem. What I find useful about the Kasa and Tapo ecosystem is that the app gives instant control and is reliable, no lag or drop outs, and it syncs to local time including daylight savings. Be careful of those cheaper switches because they might not be able to handle high power draw devices. The Xiaomi smart switch shut down because it couldn't handle the washing machine power draw when it was heating water whereas the Kasa had no problems.

    • What do you think of the BigW EKO plugs?

  • It comes to $20 (including shipping) with the AFTERPAY10 coupon.

  • As per previous discussions, i had decided to buy Kasa 6 months ago, now you have confused me to buy Tapo …

    • It's really annoying that TP-Link has Tapo as well as Kasa. See https://www.techhive.com/article/579939/tapo-smart-home-line…

There has been some discussion that TP-Link will release a single app to control the Tapo and Kasa devices. The weird thing is that when I changed the password on the Tapo app the Kasa app couldn't log in anymore. Both apps use the same login details. Luckily if you have an iPhone you can download the free third party app called Watt which is one app that can control both Tapo and Kasa devices. Until TP-Link unifies the controls the big difference between the 2 apps is that that Tapo app allows sharing devices and smart home integration and the Kasa app doesn't.

    • Would not trust kasa smart products. Got told not to use it for anything trivial since they failed to stop water I setup to flow into my predrilled aquarium for 15 minutes everyday. No config issue from my end. They checked including my Asus router which is rock solid. Moved on to Grid plug which has never failed. Instead of fixing the issue they tell me don't use kasa plug for important stuff. Lol WTF……

      • Who makes "Grid plug" please?

        • I think it is just Arlec wrapping Tuya and calls it GridConnect. Normally, I would just use the Tuya app (or Home Assistant). Otherwise, you end up having several apps for re-skinned Tuya devices and cannot see them all in one app.

          • @netsurfer: Have you used tuya, kasa and tapo or only tuya ? Which one is the best if you have used all of them ?

    • With Matter on the horizon, maybe there is a small chance to end this mess. However, I reckon the device makers are smart and will only offer that to new devices.

  • Is there a 15A version of this? By any brand?
