Why are Nintendo games sooo expensive! Coming from gamepass even a special of $62 seems like too much. It’s probably going to sell out fast too.

    • +9

No competition, Nintendo produced games are only available on Nintendo consoles so they can charge what ever they like. Unlike other publishers that will go on sale to push sales on other platforms. Switch has really good sales on indie games though.

      • +3

That said, usually they're $80 at launch versus $120 / $150 for 2022's 'GoLd eDiTiOn' i.e. the full game

        • +2

Fair point, at least the majority of standard games on current gen consoles at launch have come down. Was insane when 1st launched games on PS5 were often $30-40+ more than on PS4 for the same game.

        • Amazing that it launched 5 about years ago ($62 - but in 2017 $s)

        No competition

For 1st party games, sure. But that doesn't explain cross-platform titles.

Switch store is still much more expensive than Sony/MS, and many times more expensive than PC, especially when comparing the best sale/discount price.

My favourite example is the not-that-popular 2011 title LA Noire, which has been $7 on steam dozens of times since release.

It's $80 on Switch. On sale, it hits $40.

Indie games get better discounts on Switch, sure, but still several times more than elsewhere.

    • Coming from gamepass even a special of $62 seems like too much.

Now you have a taste of what it's like to be a PC gamer, especially one with just a little patience.

Anything above $10 for a top AAA game and we just wait a few months for the next big steam sale.

(Not always, of course; sometimes it's just given away for free on Epic before that next sale arrives).

Nintendo gets to dictate their online store prices like the others, PS used to be horrible with most their sales usually being way more than what you could get physically too. For sure Nintendo seems to be lacking there but I think they know most people either want their 1st party games and know they have to play it on their console or they want the portability the switch offers. I guess with the Steam deck there might be a little less reason to go with the switch but I can't see them changing. I have to admit their offering of small indie games seems better than PS at least and see a lot at only $1-$3

    • Expensive? $62 is like half a tank of fuel. Which is like an hour or two of work depending on your job.

Who’s getting paid $62 an hour?
Certainly very few of us…talk about being out of touch.

Nintendo are also just notoriously greedy too. Look at all the takedown orders they have issued on YouTube videos and fan-made content etc. They want to make every dollar they can from their IPs.

    • I only buy Nintendo exclusives, the rest I buy on Xbox or PC. Nintendo is expensive but I can't get the exclusives anywhere else unfortunately. Luckily Xbox and PC is so cheap that the over spend on Nintendo is evened out on the under spend on Xbox and PC.

      For me at least.

  • If anyone plays smash online, hit me up DM ;)

  • Odyssey at 55 is good but not great, especially for this older title.
However, I can tell you it's a masterpiece!

I wish the rumour of a odyssey 2 come true.

There are plenty for $40-50 on Marketplace.

  • +2

Ah yes, Mario Odyssey for a discount of $6 cheaper than it was selling on day one at EB games in 2017. What a magical bargain.

    • and yet, here you are. Odyssey is worth every penny btw

      • +1

        We bought it day 1

  • +2

Odyssey worth the buy, bloody great game

  • I got my switch only like 9 months or so and Odyssey is worth every cent imo. I can’t Cappy jump for the life of me though, I have like 6 Koopa races left to do but I am not fast enough :(

  • Not a bad price. Might wait for super smash brothers to go a bit cheaper though, might feel a bit of buyers remorse at this price. Was as low as $49 pre 2020, with recent sales being roughly $59.

    • +2

I bought smash bros ages back and ended up just feeling punished by my boomer reflexes. Great game if you're into that sort of thing, but I certainly don't think it's worth more than Odyssey or BOTW

      • +1

Nice 1, thanks for the review

  • Smash is now $72
