  • Hopefully EB price-match and I still get the pre-order hat :)

    • +53

I dunno about you, but my money goes to Big W for being competitive from the get-go. Unlike EB!!!

      • +29

When are EB ever competitive? Their pricing model is in place to catch out mums and dads that don't know any better…

        • -2

EB where having a sale last week this was priced at 20 bucks now it's 50 bucks with 50% off

      • +21

100% this. Target and big w need to be encouraged when they promote deals like these. Video game consumers are the real winners if they stay in business, and both look like they're on their last legs.

        • +11

          ^

          As above.

Please support Big W and Target guys!! (no I'm not associated with them lol)

        • +2

Are they really on their last legs? I always buy from them and thought people do too for their good pricing. I hope they never go under

        • +6

@TLZ: Their games section get smaller and smaller each time I go there. It's quite sad. Their deals can be pretty good.

        • +2

@TLZ: both of them have been returning huge losses for woolies and wesfarmers. The rise of Kmart as they transitioned their business model from something similar to target and big w has correlated with the decline of big w and cannibalising even targets market share ( which isn't ideal for wesfarmers). Coupled with the expected entrance of Amazon in Australia and an unclear target market, it doesn't spell well for both target and big dubs, as much as I like supporting them.

        • @montorola:
I'm conflicted because I get EB world points but nothing from Big W

        • +1

@CaptainNewspeak: Yeah we had the head of woolies speak about the struggles of BIG W. It will be revamping it stores shortly to the effect of Kmart. I still don't think it will compete with Amazon & most likely be obsolete within a few years.

        • +10

@Blitzfx: Tbh I'm pretty sure EB World points don't have particularly good rewards. Saving $10+ per game from buying from Target/Big W would save you more money than whatever rewards you could get from EB Games with their points.

        • @Ozbargain Lurker:
If I'm saving even $1, I'd go straight to Big W / Target. It's just that EB can price match. So the savings difference is gone.

        • +5

@Blitzfx: While I understand what you mean, personally it won't be worth the hassle to get some mediocre rewards anyways. Even is EB Games sold the games at the same price as Target/Big W normally, I still wouldn't buy from there anyways because they are a dodgy company that treats their employees and some customers like shit

        • +1

@Ozbargain Lurker: Worked at EB Games for 5 years. Best company I've ever worked for. Not once was I treated like 'shit'.

        • +1

@TLZ: It's not that they're going to go under but if people keep pricing matching and going else where it's going to be a (profanity) Catch 22. Target and Big W are already not making money on games. To the point where if it's not a popular game they won't stock it. like Nier type of game. That leaves JB HiFi and EBGames to stock which they will price it @ $90 and who suffers? Us. We will pay through our asses for games in the future if people keep going else where and not going to the place that actually is competitive…

I'm not associated with Big W or Target but come the (profanity) on. The games that they stock keeps getting smaller and smaller bc asses like these don't care as long as it doesn't hurt them.

Kmart use to stock games and all that but look at them now. Just shit for babies and beds.

(Not directed at you but generally speaking.)

        • -7

          @HeyHeyHeyIsItADeal:
u will be able to buy em from amazon in the future so dont worry.
if u r worried about bigw making a loss on every game they sell then u should buy elsewhere :)

        • +1

          @Blitzfx:

Are your 62 carrots worth $18?

Because that's how much you would have paid if the bigw/target stop selling games.

If target & BigW stop selling games then say goodbye to the sweet prices and hello to EB's RRP price model.

Go to eb's site now and look at GTAV on PS4. $99.95!!!!!!! Game was release 2 years ago on Nov 18……TWO YEARS AGO!!!

      • Unfortunately, I like to try before I buy which is why I get mine from EB.. with 7 day returns you can't go wrong

      • And also 5% off using eGift.

    • +2

From what I've been told, the cappy has been sold out so there's no point?

    • I've always pre-ordered from EB and price matched on the day and still get the bonus. Did this for Splatoon 2 back in July, and Pokemon XY when it first came out

    • It probably depends big time on the person you get and what exactly the preorder is but for destiny 2 recently if I price matched they wouldn't give me the cayde6 figure preorder bonus

      • +1

pay full price, get the fig, then return and buy at cheap price.
often when i rock up they dont have the preorder bonus and just say bad luck we didnt receive them….or they only give it to first in store or mates

    • Depends on the manager, midnight launch!

    • EB price match any in-stock deals (and from my experience, they tend to check the quoted deal has stock before matching price).

  • Any current Switch deals? The Odyssey bundle is $550!

    • +3

      Big W - $529; refer to https://www.vooks.net/img/2017/10/vooks_bigw_odyssey.jpg

      No free hat though.

(and if you use egift cards from cashrewards since you have time to order them now, it'll be 5% off that)

      • +4

People were getting the Switch for around $380 in recent ebay deals though. $380 + $62 is only $442. I'd be looking for something around that price.

        • +1

That's a stretch. I missed the original eBay deals and in the next round, they were only at $480ish before the 15% discount making it $408. I ended up just buying the console and Pokken game from Big W with the egiftcards for $475ish, and heading overseas soon to get GST back. Not as cheap as possible but cheap enough.

        • +2

@jace88: Not really a stretch. I got mine for $385, and there have been a few deals on here for $380.

        • +4

The Odyssey bundle is only worth it if you really, REALLY want the red joy-cons. Otherwise you'd be better off waiting.

        • @khfreakau: Wasn't there red joycons sold separately anyway?

        • +3

@bcstyle: There's the "neon red" ones, which are the ones readily available in stores. These are "Mario red" or whatever you want to call them, which are a slightly different shade and can only be gotten through the bundle. Nintendo might decide to release them separately but nothing announced yet.

        • @TheDangerStomp:

True. If you're willing to wait then it's doable but for me when I one day decided I wanted it I went for the best deal I could find on at that time.

    • Big W had bundle with FIFA 18 or Lego Worlds or ARMS for $499.

      • +6

I think Ozbargain has broken me. If I can't get 20% off retail I just can't buy it….

  • +9

$58.90 after using a WISH eGift Card through Cashrewards!

    • +3

      My thoughts exactly.

  • +1

Dang, already pre-ordered from Ozgameshop for $59 using my player points. I find they generally have the best everyday prices on most titles and shipping times are reasonable.

    • +3

you can still cancel your order.. or would you rather wait till it gets delivered?

    • +14

Yeah, get some fresh new ideas like Call of Dooty!

    • +11

If you don't like the Mario franchise, Nintendo probably isn't the console for you (IMO).

(before I get downvoted, I'm not saying the Switch or 3DS don't have great titles both first and third party, but the reality is that at least for home consoles, the other two consoles have a more solid value proposition at current price points if you aren't a fan of the first party titles)

    • +4

      I love repetitive things.

    • -5

This, very much so. Most of the 3D Mario games have looked and felt far too similar to me lately, with the only difference being the levels. Last Mario game I remember really enjoying was Super Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube. I remember Super Mario All Stars which was great, because most of the Mario games on that had different art styles and themes. (Yes, I know, they were previously released titles, but still.)

      • +1

I found Mariokart is repetitive in concept but somehow always enjoyable. Heck, the move to HD and then Joycon controls was worth buying MK8 again!

      • +5

I dunno, Mario galaxy was unreal. Haven't played much of any recent Marios but I'll be getting this based on the early reviews.

        • +3

          +1.

Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64 are my all time favourites!

        • Admittedly, that was one I never got to play, but it did look pretty god damn sweet. I actually forgot about it :) There was a really pretty one released on the 3DS that I would have preferred on the switch recently..forgot what that was too.

        • @Aussar: So yeah, this is the first full size 3D Mario game since Galaxy 2 on the Wii. The last couple have been smaller outings on the 3DS, and the Wii U didn't even get one.

        • @johnno07: I just remember games like New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario World and how they felt wrong to me, I thought there were a few others, but i can't find anything else.

        • @Aussar:

Super Mario World? The 1990 2D sidescroller for the SNES?

        • @johnno07: My mistake, sorry. Super Mario 3D World on the Wii

    • +6

The Mario franchise games ( at least the main series platformers) are anything but repetitive. New mechanics, physics and novel gameplay in every installment I've played.

      • +2

Exactly, no idea what this guygirl is on about.

    • +1

Yeah you're right, time to scrap all their established franchises and start again, surefire winning idea right there. Get on a flight to Japan and do your pitch to the Nintendo board before someone on here steals your idea!

    • +2

Mario v Rabids released like a month ago. Basically Mario meets Xcom, how is that repetitive?

      • +1

Developed primarily by UBI but I do agree at least they lent the IP out to do something different. Big step for nintendo really.

    • +6

Don't bite gents. This guy is clearly looking for a reaction.

    • Are you new to gaming?

  • +11

Say what you will about the longevity of Mario & perhaps there is a case to be argued about nintendo not inventing the wheel with the IP. However the game will be extremely polished, likely enjoyable for many hours & not laced with micro transcations & loot boxes.

The current gaming landscape atm is all about Publishers pushing the envelope in terms of in game purchases, cutting content & loot boxes playing on peoples addiction. I have no doubt this will be at the very least a good game :)

    • I don't know what a loot box is but people seem to hate them.

      • It's a box with loot in it.

      • +3

Its essentially a paid box that contains random game loot. Ones that are just barely deemed acceptable are cosmetic loot boxes which just includes skins for characters or guns. The really scum of the earth ones contain power advantages within the crate. Things that give you an advantage over other players in game.

My opinion of them is this. They are addictive. You have a random chance of getting an item. The usual time to earn said item in game is typically always longer then purchasing a paid loot box. Which is still random & has no garuntee of dropping anyway. They play on people with addictive natures & I think it sets a very bad precedent for younger gamers. I could ramble on about this a lot but thats the basic jist of it.

        • +4

          Akin to gambling

        • +2

@funkay: yes i believe in the uk they are trying to get it passed as gambling in some form.

        • +2

          @funkay: Akin? It's exactly gambling.

        • Wow so you have to pay for them? Pfft. Ozbargainers wouldn't fall for that garbage.

  • Nice, was hoping and half expecting Target or Big Dub would have it for 60 odd. Nice to have some reassurance. Cheers!

  • Nice, was hoping and half expecting Target or Big Dub would have it for 60 odd. Nice to have some reassurance. Cheers!

  • +6

Loyalty goes to big w for constant low prices during these switch releases. This is the reason i brought the switch πŸ‘Š

    • Must get a lot of parents walking around Big W just to pick up a new switch game, and a few other things while they are there. It’s brilliant because I bet a lot of parents would rather not spend time at EB anyway.

  • +1

Waiting for Target for $64 or $62 at release. Going to Burwood on the release date and they don't have a Big W there.

  • +3

Buy $62 gift card on cash rewards and save 5% ($3.10) and you can get it for $58.90

    5% off GiftCards

or if you're like me with a 5% staff discount card, buy $58.90 giftcard for $55.80 and use staff card at checkout to bring game to $58.90 … aaaaaaannnnndddd that's how you OZBARGAIN

    • How do you buy a specific amount on a Gift Card? In store? I have staff card and would also like to ozbargain as hard as you.

      • Egift card from cashrewards? And you can load gift cards with any amount, are you sure you have a staff card?

        • I do. Just unfamiliar with cashrewards. Thanks!

  • +2

Just a heads up guys, if targets price is $65 or below, you have the oppurtunity to get it cheaper than with eWish @ Big W through Target eBay 10% off, that comes around once in a while.

  • +3

Little off topic but I really wish the eshop would have decent pricing as well (or at least decent specials once in a while - bit too early to tell with Switch but based on past experience)… but it seems Nintendo is fixated on not undercutting retail stores/RRP.

    • Nintendo have always had high prices for their first party titles and it's intentionally done to give an illusion of quality. If its getting savaged though they tend to drop the price (see Metroid Other M, Federation Force, Star Fox Zero).

      • Star Fox Zero.

        scoffs
This has got to be one of the biggest fails ever for Nintendo. Still can't get over how bad the controls were.

  • Can you preorder it at this price?

  • Anyone know if this stays at that price or is it like before and only runs for 2 days then goes up in price.
Edit: "The catalogue this pricing features in runs from October 26th to November 8th"

  • +1

Saw SNES mini in stock, bought another one. I'll scalp this one to my family, in the form of a gift wrapped present under the xmas tree.

  • +1

    Well, cancelled my JB pre-order.

    • You can still price match though, no?

  • +1

I'm off to Japan next weekend so this will help pass a few hours on the flight 😁

  • Dam, Vooks saids Target told them their price is $64. Disappointing. At least Big W is coming through. Thankgod.

    • +2

Scratch that, apparently it's $69. Big W destorys it by a whole $7. They're killing it right now.

      • Daaang, Their Amiibos are $15 though. They even stock the 3 pack. I thought the big three werent stocking anymore…

        • Just to clarify, that's Target stocking them for $15 each? Hmm…. I don't actually have any use for another Mario or Bowser Amiibo though… would rather get a Luigi.

        • @jace88: Yeah, They're stocking the three new amiibo separately and together at $15 each or all 3 for 49. buying separately or 3 pack are the same price.

  • Can you preorder games at Big W? If there isn’t any stock in store, can you get a rain check?

    • I don't think you can. Best thing to do is call them up on that morning and ask them to put a copy on hold. Don't think this will sell out though, could be wrong.
