This will be the first Mario game I will (hopefully) put some time into since Super Mario Bros 2 on the original Gameboy.

While some things crap me about Nintendo (such as buying physical copies for best prices), I think the switch will be the first console I really get my value for money from since my PS1 days.

    • Feel the same, but it's a tossup between my N64 and PS1.. leaning toward the N64 just due to the countless hours in mario party and brawl.

This is going to be an iconic title, no doubt at all.

  • Welp, hope it isn't a fight for stock tomorrow! I know I'm calling as soon as they open.

Ugh, just realized how far Big W is now.. I wonder if I take the catalogue in, kmart or target will price match.. Maybe JB, any experience with that guys?

In my experience JB should price match it for you. I dropped into a store yesterday and confirmed with the staff member and he seemed fine with it.
I’m saying that, I’m going to give my cash to Big W as they’re in the same complex and I’d rather support them due to what has to be the cheapest price on release.

  • BigW Melbourne CBD, around 40 ppl were queuing at 8am, stock may not last till 9am.

  • Wife just picked a copy from Hurstville, NSW - plenty of stock still left as of 8:50am, though people were queuing since the morning to pick their copies up.

    • lol I was there for the opening and not too many people at Hurstville. Morning line was about 7-10 at the desk, no line prior to doors opening. Playing it now! :D

      • I meant - queue at the desk :-) Wife was 6th or 7th (the only girl :D

I was the 2nd person in line. Didn't see anyone from the front use use a WISH eGift Card so didn't think anyone else was from ozbargain hahaha

Had no idea there was a co-op 2 player option where one person plays mario and the other plays cappy! Now all I need now are friends :P
Game play is pretty fun so far

        • @constantly L8:

          Not that hard-core yet :-D

Great news about the 2-player co-op - at least both of my kids won't be fighting :D

  • What is this hat and why should I care?

  • Man the switch is just smashing it this year, 97% on Metacritic for Mario

  • Big W Ballarat stock flew off the shelf within minutes of store opening. Luckily there was stock out the back and I got one, despite arriving 10 minutes after opening.

  • Grabbed my preorder from EB Games with the hat for $62 by price matching, thanks!

      Pic of hat?

Here you go EB Games Cappy https://imgur.com/a/ix7Nz

Way too small for my head, although that's a common problem for me, this one is much tighter than usual. They used an elastic band to secure it on your head.

  • Picked up my preorder from EB and price matched this. Got the preorder Cappy exclusive, as well as a Nintendo Switch inflatable beach ball and Super Mario Odyssey poster

Would rather give my $$ to the company who is trying to give me a genuine deal than those EB hacks!

Support Big W guys! If EB have no competition, they'll just charge whatever they feel like and rip us off even harder!

      • In the past I've always purchased my releases from Big W/Target (bought the Switch + Zelda bundle for $519 from Big W on release day). I (and friends that I have who buy physical copies of games) only get from EB games if there's a pre-order exclusive that I would want :(

        • Its a trap!

      • I disagree. As has been said before, EB Games are a specialty store, and while some of their profits come from distributor/manufacturer rebates (from meeting volume targets in specific timeframes), they are the premium bricks'n'mortar games store.

It's exactly the same as supporting your FLGS (Friendly Local Game Shop) when it comes to tabletop/board gaming. FLGS' have almost completely disappeared due to online and non-specialty competition (though there has been a small resurgence recently), with the result being non-mainstream products become significantly more difficult to discover and purchase as they are not carried by the remaining retail stores. Surprisingly, Zing (part of EB/ThinkGeek) are stocking a good selection of gateway games, and even a handful of more serious games.

  • Got mine from BigW this morning, stoked to play during my lunch hour.

BigW Brisbane CBD. About 15+ peps when doors opened. Played for about 15 mins…..AMAZING!

  • Woo, time to re-experience my childhood

  • Oh crap, this is today but I'm at work :\

    • Go and grab it at lunch time.

Waiting since launch of the switch for this game well worth the wait so far so good bring back Mario :).

Big W in Melb CBD had about 60-70 people this morning when opening and the guy said they had 200 copies in stock. Would try get yours sooner than later, im sure the 200 will be gone by the end of the day if not already.

  • Anyone else have trouble calling their local store to check availability? Ended up getting it priced matched at JB as did the person in front of me.

  • Would JB price match Zelda for $75 (75 is BIGW price, JB is $89)?

    • Don’t see why not.

  • Thanks, the legend at EB pricematched even without a catalog, even gave me a free poster and beach ball.

    • +7

If they were legends you wouldn't need to price match….just saying

  • Got one at Melb CBD around 11:00 am, the guys said there are still more than 100 copies there.

  • +1

Over 15 copies at Winston Hills NSW.

  • jb price matched for me no problem

  • Heaps of copies at Forest Hill, VIC.

If anyone is at PAX AUS, they're selling Mario Odyssey for $58 at the Harvey Norman section.

    Assassins Creed Origins is $68.

    • Nice Mario price!

This morning at BigW Brisbane CBD the guy at the tech counter had no idea Mario was released today and thought everyone was lining up for Ass Creed……he was sorely mistaken!

      • Don't forget about Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus!

(There was at least one guy at my local EB last night for that one :)

  • Well, I price matched at EB just because its so much closer than everywhere else, I pushed hard for the free cappy but no avail.. So I gave the big W catalogue to others in store to price match.. now to get snacks and not move for the entire weekend.

  • -2

Dont go ebganes to buy. They dont give the cap. If price match

    • It's a preorder item..

    • Rubbish! I pre-ordered, price-matched, and received the free Cappy!

      • Lucky! I guess depending on store… brandon park one does not allow.

        • That's odd, given it was a manager who told me I could price match on pre-orders, before I pre-ordered!

They were even kind enough to match the Target Amiibo prices of $15, even though they had not been officially published by Target.

  • Price matched at EB since it was more convenient

  • The free cap is different from the $35 one. The $35 cap is much a nicer quality.

    • And it fits adult heads :)

  • Just a couple left in Melbourne CBD.

  • Sold out at Melbourne cbd…..

  • If anyone is interested I was able to price match at Target for flybuys

  • JB HiFi Perth CBD are price matching Big W for those interested (no Big W in town).

  • Definitely worth supporting Big W. I preordered at EB for full price specifically to get the cap as my local are really anal about price matching and preorder bonuses.

Alas it was all in vain as I was told there were no Cappy hats left! How does that even happen?

    • Well, minutes after they refused mine at EB, I watched the counter-staff give friends like 3 of them, so thats possible too. Really wish I supported big w on this one.
We should write up a petition to try persuade them to keep stocking this type of thing if we promise to buy it. They can easily disrupt the market if supply is there (from us).

Got one copy from my local BigW for $62. Paid using eGift card so the price come down to 59 after the 5% discount.

    • What's the deal with 5% off eGift Cards?

      • Via Cashrewards, WISH cards.

        • Scratch that! Misread purchase location! D'oh!

  • got one from BIGW kingsway, i got here about lunch time and i think i was the first to grab a copy. Also picked up a SNES Mini that got returned from layby that morning. Used my Tpoints to buy a $181 BIGW evoucher so cost me $0 in the end :)

  • Eb games just price matched this at $62 without me even asking. I just said I was looking for a deal on the game (forgot to mention it was sold out at Target).
