Hey op. Generally msy is very well priced, but could you get some extra marketing value of out this and drop in a few items that are examples of great bargains?

    • Everything 10% off!

      • +19

best thing is 10% on top those that are already on sale! =)

        • Sigh, don't need a new computer but guess time to build one now.

      • RTX 3080 Ventus would be $1214, bargain!

        • +1

MSRP from 2 years ago, lol. What a time to be alive.

    • They are giving 10% off everything pretty good deal from a reputable store.

      • +14

Five years ago, but some context on "reputable":

        • +2

Yeah, MSY used to be dodgy AF - although I didn't get burnt personally.
Hopefully after being spanked twice by the ACCC they've improved.
Sales aside, now I just go to Centrecom (also in Clayton).
Far less waiting around, prices are OK, and they seem to be a bit more legit.

        • +1

          Time can heal.

I just recently returned a CPU to Adelaide store and they not only swapped it on the spot, they upgraded it to the next series ( AMD 3000>5000 series )
They did this based on my statements alone and did not even test the CPU.

I was a little taken back by how nice and professional they were.

      • Puberty!! Sorry, just my Wordle brain…

Deal has not started but the website is already slow to the snail pace

    • +2

Yep, already in shambles. I'm out

    • +1

The website has always been sluggish.

  • +9

can the website only handle less than 400 users

    • +4

      Budget shared hosting FTW!

  • +10

Site has been OzBargained and is down

  • +1

Can you pick it up at the physical store after you order it online?

    • +4

      Yes. You are able to.
      1) Select the store you want to pick it up from.
      2) Purchase the item and select pick up in store.

      • +1

        Thanks OP

  • +2

    Website down.

  • +10

Parts.pdf still online as usual, if you want to look at all the prices without having to suffer the slow web servers

  • +6

ozbargained and it hasn't even started.. oh dear

  • Wow $2899 - 10% for a 3080. What a bargain….

    • I honestly don't get this. A fair few stores do it. Why have items listed that would absolutely never sell?

Is it old items they don't really have in stock any more? Old overpriced stock they're able to return to the distributor if it doesn't sell?

  • +4

Oooh so that mousepad will now be $0.60 cheaper (if it's still in stock)

  • +1

Thank you for the amazing response! Yes you can get some amazing deals starting from midnight later!

We're sorry about downtime, we are aware and are fixing it at the moment.

    • -1

What about recently purchased items? Are you able to offer any rebate on monitors purchased yesterday?

      • +6

Why would they possibly offer you a rebate on something bought outside of a promotional period?

        • +1

Some stores do this. Likely because it encourages customers to buy without feeling like they have to 'wait' in case there is a deal shortly. May or may not be worth it to the store but some do it so they must think so.

      • +1

If the prices go back up, are you gonna pay them back the difference?

    • Hi, yes we do carry NAS products.

  • -1

Why would OP post a cracker deal when their server is down :S

    • +5

It went down 5 mins after we posted. =)

      • Tough Crowd 😅 only a joke..

  • +1

Hoping they are not increasing price to match 10% off during the downtime.

    • +7

No, that is not the case.

    • Something something ACCC something something been down that road before

  • +17

So glad to be out of the stage in my life where I would deal with these jokers to save $10.

I know this is sacrilege on OzB, but I'd rather pay a bit extra to a business with the faintest attempts at professionalism + basic customer service. I would approach this deal with only slightly less caution and cynicism than somebody trying to sell me cheap parts in a Macca's carpark.

    • +1

      why?

      • +11

        Just Google MSY + ACCC.

One of the more anti-consumer retail computer stores. See also: Harvey Norman, of course.

        • -2

fines from 5 years ago? practices can change, i haven't personally bought from them but would be willing

          • +3

@THX: Spend some time in the forums here. The leopard HAS NOT changed its spots. For consumers, the change of ownership meant very little. They work on razor thin margins and, in my experience, corners - and ethics - continue to be cut.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: but you just asked me to google msy and ACCC? not forums

              • +3

                @THX: Correct.

I initially told you look at actions taken by regulators.

When you suggested they were too old, I pointed you to a source of more contemporaneous discontent about their business practices.

          • +4

@THX: Practices can change, but the burden of proof should be pretty high for you to take a chance with somebody who has literally broken the law in how they treat customers (not to mention all the stuff that's just shitty behaviour without being illegal).

If things have improved - and I doubt they have - it will be in response to declining customer numbers, and I won't give my business back to the same company who treated so many people poorly when we didn't have another option.

          • +3

            @THX: They haven't.

        • +4

Yes that was some time ago and it was a painful experience for us at MSY.

@Clear: Oh boy! Now THAT brought back some memories. 😬

        • Bought parts plenty of times over the years at Balcatta, and never had a problem.

Good value, and good service. 👍

    • Sorry for your experience.

MSY is in the process of improving our customer service to always prioritize our customers.

Do email to us at [email protected] if you have an unpleasant experience or product issues, we will surely assist.

      • +5

I appreciate your note here - and the fact the reviews on Maps etc are getting better is a sign you're doing a great job. Plus, some of the prices here are great value on good products.

I have personally been badly treated by this business too many times to take a chance, but others should have a go and make up their own minds. I'm not saying a business is incapable of change - just that in my case there's too much history for me to ever shop at MSY again.

        • +1

          Hi Samuel,

Sorry for your previous experience with MSY. We are going through a big change and we are putting a lot of priority on our customer experience. Do give us a chance to serve you again.

  • +2

MSY prices no longer competitive, with low variety. Easy to 10% off unknown brands such as Gamdias and Armaggeddon, hard to 10% off Razer, Logitech, Steelseries etc. which they for the most part stopped selling.

Should archive a copy for every year, so that we can look back in ten years time and tell your grandkids: look honey, we used to pay $500~600 for a 1080p Graphics card during the crypto boom, and we thought that was expensive!

Your kids will then laugh and then proceed to play Call of Duty on their Google Pixel 20 Ultra connected to a 48inch QD OLED monitor.

MSY's customer service, at least in Melbourne and Adelaide, have gotten a lot better over recent years in my experience. It did take a fair belting by the ACCC to force them to change their ways, though.

    • Thank you for your support. We are striving to do even better. We are committed to do so.

  • +2

Given how slow their website already is, good luck to everyone trying to buy something tomorrow 😂

  • +2

Tech deals are hard to get as you are fighting hoards of ultra nerds and geeks and they get more fun out of these deals and will go to war with their geekiness to nab the deal.

  • Now that I think about it, can I ask why MSY fell off (in terms of price competitiveness) compared to these newer tech stores? I remember building my first computer many years ago with parts all from here but now the other guys can bring out cheaper prebuilts and generally have more promotions

    • +1

We are still as competitive and we do have promotions as well.
Probably over the years MSY online has not participated much online.
We are changing and will have more presence online.

MSY will deliver to you competitive and quality products.
We will also be striving to alleviate our customer service.

MSY in the future will have a go at making customer service less painful/severe.

        For now? Good luck.

We will also be striving to alleviate our customer service.

Alleviate your customer service - Is that meant to be a good thing?

    • +4

They have to actually hire staff now for customer service/warranty claims. They then pass that cost onto the customer.

I remember the days of 20 people queuing for good prices out of the Auburn store and they had only one dude trying to do everything (and was in no rush to do so either). I haven't been back since a crap customer service experience in 2020. I recommend everyone just avoid.

      • +2

I remember the days of 20 people queuing for good prices out of the Auburn store and they had only one dude trying to do everything (and was in no rush to do so either).

Hell yeah, great times. I went to Auburn MSY just after they changed the shop layout after they got really popular. They used to have displays and let the customers roam and browse but then they took it all away to use the floorspace to put their stock, and just had a small area where people just lined up to the counter to buy their parts and leave with their stuff afterwards.

I was walking around the shop thinking "wow it's really cramped in here" and a staff member walking by stopped me and said "uh, you can't be here". This other staff member who was near me the whole time was like "….I thought he worked here" (lol was 14 at the time). Straight up walked into the stock area, no signs no dividers and dudes who didn't know who worked there.

      • Used to feel like going to the soup nazi. Now, it is better. But, you don't go to MSY for the service.
MSY sell cheap cables. Their parts are no longer that competitive now.

        • That was when MSY used to be good… now it's worse because their prices aren't competitive anymore and they're just another mediocre PC shop

          • @m3ndL3:

That was when MSY used to be good

They used to be one of the cheapest. MSY benefited a lot from the introduction of GST. Some of their competitors used to do some dodgy stuff. However, GST made it hard for their past competitors.

MSY still sell cheap cables. I am not recommending them. However, I get HDMI 2.1 cables and use them for HDMI 2.0.

Mmm when you got stuck behind that one person who didn't know the MSY dance, who starts asking rookie questions and attempting to strike up a conversation… NO PARTS FOR YOU. BAN FOR 6 MONTH. NEXT!

          • @schquid: I recall queued up for nearly 1 hour, the guy in front of me bought 3 of the item I wanted to buy. So, when it was my turn, it was literally the last guy just bought the last 3 (I only wanted 1).

On occasions, I got fed up and just went to another store near there (Auburn) and paid a few more bucks.

        • +1

Yeah I cottoned onto MSY during my old swap meet days at uni, maybe bang on 20 years ago. Burke rd store (the original) in Malvern or somewhere near there.

Probably familiar to you all. Boxes stacked up to the ceiling, about 600mm width for walking so you’d get personal with everyone in the line on the way out (no 1.5m separation then!), you had to know what you wanted before going in or you’d have 20 blokes behind you grunting and giving you angry eyes. But I always knew what I wanted and wrote it down, so I got to the counter and slapped my list down and they’d go convert my list into a stack of boxes.

It was literally the ozbargain of the computer shop world. There was no other shop in Melbourne that had cheaper prices.

          • @Corgsta: The Malvern store was started by the owner. I used to visit it before MSY started expanding. Boss was nice. That was before GST was introduced though so still had to go to swap meet to take advantage of the other stores dodgy sales tax. After GST was introduced, MSY became competitive.

NSW stores, I've been to both Auburn and Ultimo stores. I suspect Auburn used to be another store which MSY took over. Earlier on, it used to have a 2 queue system (you pay first, then there is another queue to collect) quite annoying - that's why I suspect it was another store initially. They did abolish that quite quickly. Ultimo is probably the most soup nazi one. I preferred not to go to that one unless I was really desperate. In VIC, Clayton store has the biggest soup nazi feel. It kinda depends on the staff too I guess.

          • +1

@Corgsta: Because (it appeared that in the early days Malvern store) they didn't pay/charge sales tax or provide receipts. That was back before GST. I bought from them in those days too. And yeah, i remember the irritation of someone having no idea what they wanted and asking heaps of questions of the sales guy who only spoke broken English. MS Why is definitely not the giant they used to be, maybe they can come back and improve their prices while meeting legal requirements.

One time after lining up and waiting over an hour to be served, the guy in front of me complained that they had none of the parts he was after. When he said "do you have anything i want?" the sales guy literally picked up his stapler and said "you want stapler?". It was hilarious.

            • @giggler: There should be some sort of best of MSY soup Nazi experience compilation. Would be just as entertaining as the soup Nazi episode.

Those days are over I reckon. MSY will not able to return to its formal glory. Its Web site needs some work and the issue with cheap items are often out of stock remains. PC will also have an uphill battle.

      • +3

My last experience with MSY was collecting an order at their Ultimo store in Sydney back in January 2021.

I got to listen to a painful interaction about bullsh!t warranty claim processes between store staff and a 16-ish year old kid. He had an MSY-assembled custom PC that he got for Christmas and it had let magic smoke come out of the PSU just a couple of weeks later.

I'm OK to confident my ground, when I need to, to assert my rights as a consumer. But when stores take advantage of their more vulnerable customers I draw a line on giving them any more of my hard-earned.

15 months on, I'm not going to pretend that my non-return has made any impact on their business results…but I am happy with my decision to give them a wide berth.

        • It is unrealistic to expect MSY to provide OfficeWorks type service after the 14 days. That's the risk of buying a PC around Christmas. Let me guess, that kid and you both expect a replacement on the spot whereas MSY staff insisted to go through the warranty process.

Even the gold standard Apple isn't that great sometimes. Today, I went to an Apple store, and Apple refused to do the repair for me for free quoting the warranty period has elapsed (even that i-device was hardly used). Also, the staff tried to sell items to other customers coming in for repairs.

          • -3

@netsurfer: Your guess was wrong and I'm not going to be gaslit with strawman arguments. Add me to your blocked user list and move on. I'll do the same.
