  • Not in the same league, not sure if you're glamping, but I personally use something like that when I go camping.

Not as convenient, and probably not suitable if you're frothing milk for more than 2 people

  • I currently use a battery operated milk whisk and don't like the results very much, hoping the Bellman will give me an acceptable steamed milk outcome.

I got one of these! Does take some getting use to!

    1. I usually fill 2cm of water, heat in the steamer with wand open for ~5mins, close wand
    2. once it starts whistling, steam some water in a jug first, see how much bubbles the wand generates, close wand
    3. repeat #2 until not much bubbles generate anymore.
    4. Then steam the milk in the jug once it's whistling again.

Best milk texture is when you generate the foam in the first 5-10s of steaming (or until warm), then spin the milk until desired heat (dont go beyond 70°C, unless you want scalded milk).

P.s. Always purge the steam wand after steaming

    • I have a vintage electric one. I leave the wand open, turn it on, close the wand about 30-60 seconds after it starts hissing. steam the milk once whistling. Always purging before steaming.

    • I have one too, but almost every time I’ve used it I froth the crap out of the milk. It ends up 3x the volume. I have used numerous espresso machines and don’t have issues, I keep the wand just below the surface or at the surface of the milk. But yeah I might try the water first. The other tips I fully agree with.

I've read that purging the wand before steaming is very important, some even recommending dumping the wand into cold water before purging.

  • For best results, this Bellman's or Bialetti's Tuttocrema?

    • Tbh, bialetti is a cheaper and easier alternative. Except if you need to froth milk for more than 2 people.
You can always follow my link above which is the same except you put the jar of milk in the microwave. The tuttocrema if you don't have microwave handy

    • Bialetti's Tuttocrema FTW + Bialetti's Brikka = not a bad setup for camping.

      • That's my setup, but I've got the Moka Express instead of the Brikka

I took one of these on a year long trip around Aus, took me about three months to master it, there is a knack but def worth the effort.

Check the Alternative Brewing in-depth video to get a head start 👌

Discourse - I have not owned the bellman, but have seen friends attempt these systems.

I feel we have finally nailed our camping coffee system. Whilst it may not be up to standards of our home espresso setup it does a fine coffee whilst out bush.

-Bialetti Brikka 4 cup. (Regular Bialetti = meh)
    -Bialetti Tuttocrema milk frother.
-Grind just prior to leaving, store in air tight container.
    -Gas stove.

A very reliable, easy to setup, repeatable = dialled in.

The milk texture on the bellman was quite nice and espresso was ok, the time to get to prepared and reset didn't seem worth it.

    • Interested to hear more about the difference between bialetti brikka and regular. Please

    • What’s the difference in your opinion between the Bialetti’s you mentioned? Curious as I use my Moka Express every day.

      • I tried both the moka and Venus, I wasn't a great fan of watching it like a hawk until had finished.
The Brikka on the other hand has a weighted top that will release the coffee and crema*(not true Crema but better than the moka).
Very repeatable, love them currently have 2 and bought many as presents.

I have seen the updated model of the Brikka (valved) durability may be an issue but probably tastes the same.

      • I've ran the Brikka daily for about 4 years. Finally allowed the fill the bench with a BDB.

This is the bees knees for making a good milk texture for your coffee or hot choccy.

Frothers will be able to do it faster, but not as good. The best of that kind would be the one by breville milk Cafe frother: Breville Milk Frother, Silver BMF600BSS https://amzn.asia/d/eM6WoXi . As you can see they cost more.

The catch with the bellman is there is a method to get used to - and no matter what process there is, it will still take at least 10 minutes, plus some cleaning.

Now my process is - hest some water up in a kettle. Pour it to fill the bellman up to 1/3. Put the lid on, close it tight (and make sure the wand is closed).

Give it 8 minutes, then open the wand briefly then close it to get it ready - it should let out some steam and look nearly ready. This is your time now when you're good to Pour your milk and now go ahead.

There is a good science to doing the steam bit, I'm not going to pretend to be an expert here and instead link you to this:

Now with that done, enjoy your awesome drink!

Tbh, I got this juuuuust before the pandemic, and at the office had got an aldi coffee machine as well. The aldi coffee machines steamer thing wand was super over powered, but still great to use - on in like 30 seconds!

    • I had no idea Aldi had coffee machines with steamer hand

    • Put the lid on, close it tight

My bellman once kind of exploded, the rubber gasket popped out and hot steam vented, it fell on the floor. But at least I want to close to it. I think I realised it wasn’t in properly and tight enough. I haven’t used it much since (a couple of years ago) then if at all.
