    Not bad - at home:
    * S20FE 5G: 520mbps
    * S20FE 4G(SD): 350mbps

It will be interesting to see what it is like out and about.

    • Not to mention when more people shift to 5G… I remember getting great speeds during the early days of Telstra 4G with my HTC :P

  • +3

doesn't seem to be very quick though, atleast in my area

    download
    120 mbps 4g
    30 mbps 5g

    • Tullamarine VIC. Bloody impressive! Craps on my NBN lol.

      • Just did a speed test on the train around Lilydale, got 600mbps

        Oh wow!

      • +1

Are you perched like an eagle on top of the tower? Hang on, that's Canberra.

      • Damn, Vodafone 5G sucks around Brisbane, the highest speed I have ever gotten has been just over 600Mbps (usual speeds are much slower).

        • +1

Be happy as the folks out in the sticks can only dream!

  • -3

Why is this considered a bargain? Faster speeds = quicker downloads = more data used = more profit for Boost. Don’t even know why they wouldn’t offer 5G if they had the option to choose to include it or not.

    • +1

I also wonder the same for fast cars.

    • Same reason NBN has different speed plans. Why give the Ferrari for the price of a Holden if you don’t have to.

      • +1

Cos Lots of NBN plans have unlimited data . Most mobile plans do not! The more you download on mobile the more you pay. It’s 100% in the mobile provider’s best interest to have faster download speeds so you chew through more data.

  • Hopefully other Telstra resellers follow suit. Think there was an article recently mentioning that all Telstra resellers will now have access to the 5G network. Whether or not it will cost extra is the question…

  • Do anyone know if VoLTE option appears in the "Connections menu" I can only have wi-fi calling. Image

I would like to make calls using VoLTE.

    • Does VoLTE matter with 5G?

    • Looks like it is active - it's in your status bar?

Whether you see the setting depends on your phone - with a Telstra/Boost SIM in, VoLTE may be on all the time and it can't be turned off.

(This is how it is on iPhone 12 and 13 - you can't turn VoLTE off)

  • +3

Has anyone noticed since they migrated all existing customers to new plans there is poorer reception? Especially when using data?
It used to be exceptional never had a problem anywhere in Sydney for the past 2 years but as soon as I recharged at the end of March22 it feels like it's not 100% telstra network anymore. (More downgraded wholesale like the others would get)

    • +1

Not at all. Personally never had a single issue with Boost voice or data - I practically live on my mobile for work in both Melb & Syd.

  • +1

I wonder what happens on 26th September.

    • +2

Nothing is free. Boost will most likely increase plan costs.

      • +1

Yup I agree. Which is not good unless they give option for 4G to be cheaper I don’t mind that

  • Tried a speedtest. 150MB/s!

Few moments later….. You've used 2GB of your data. Didn't know speedtest took so much data!

    • Serious?? I got only 886 Mbps… small b is way different with big B.

      • I got 1030 Mbps the first run, and got 138MBps the second run (changed the units). 150 used for exaggeration purposes only.

      • And latency? Probably not good for gaming

  • +1

As I’m reading the comments I got the text. I’m not sure if I want to bother with it as 4g is fast enough for me and I don’t want to chew through my battery faster than usual.

  • Does that mean its on the full unrestricted telstra network then?

  • +6

Working as tech support in cellular industry, reading all the comments here.. Personally I can't see the point in 5G on my own phone. Industry reports say average (Telstra) 5G handset only 17.5% of the time actually connected on 5G (YMMV). The remainder of the time I guess is spending battery scanning for usable 5G in the background.. 4G is perfectly adequate for me and my boost SIM, but maybe I'm just being a tight arse late adopter.

    • As an early adopter of 5G I can confirm that having 5G switched on was killing my battery life. I ended up turning it off and never use it.

    • exactly. Unless there are unlimited data plans, which most people don't have, it doesn't really make sense. Consider this scenario, downloading your monthly 40GB quota away in 3 secs… great! … your mobile pron collection is up-to-date… then you post the speedtest screenshot e-flex to randoms… then what?! lol

  • Darn… I just made the switch to Amaysim from Boost… But then again, there's no nearby Telstra tower to where I am, so speeds are better for me with Optus.

  • I WFH so am not often off wifi, but yesterday I was out in the car and noticed the 5G symbol - got the text earlier today. This article on finder.com.au indicates that it's necessary to upgrade to a $70 plan…I wonder if this will be necessary after the trial…

    https://www.finder.com.au/boost-gets-telstra-5g-access

  • I’d be happy with a reasonable 4G signal.

We get a weak single bar and without wifi calling we’d be stuffed. When I am at my local shops - and the tower is about a hundred metres away I can get better than 190mbs downloads on 4G. That would do me everyday.

Too many NIMBYs wearing tin foil hats in my area.

  • Noticed the 5g icon on phone this morning while waiting for my train, was so confused, boost only just sent me a text about it a few minutes ago

  • I don't understand.
What do I do or click on to get this?
    I'm already with boost.

    • +1

You do nothing, they are rolling out, try to restart the phone to see if 5G is activated on your number or not.

      • Yeah, I got the message and was still on 4G - restarted iPhone 13 and 5G appeared :)

  • I started getting 5G n/w from late last year. I am not sure if boost was being selective in rolling out 5G. For wonderers, I live in south east vic

  • Outer east Mel,
    22 down, 15 up, blazing :)

  • Same on Telstra prepaid

  • This deal will leave Belong customers belonging to the slow lane?

  • +8

Boost should prioritize esim and also resume the international roaming service. They killed international roaming in 2020 and kept delaying resuming from mid 2021 to early 2022 to mid 2022.

    • +2

Totally agree. I will leave Boost this month coz I’m going to NZ. Also feel that Boost 4G signal and speed is not as good as last year.

      • +2

Same, I need to at least get sms abroad and boost kinda screws that idea over but I'm tied in. Esim and international support are so overdue

    • Fully agree. I will switch to Optus prepaid if I am travelling.

  • I got the text too from Boost. Will give it a try.

  • Oh no, as a Boost customer I chose the 4G only variant of my phone to save ~$50
Ahhhh well, have been spending most of my time hot-spotting from old phone on back to back free month deals anyway!

  • Interesting, time to buy a new phone with 5G capability

  • I suspect you will see price increase on 2709/22

  • +1

I’m not sure why its a trial. Telstra opening 5G for MVNO

Average consumer has no real advantage of 5G as long 4G is offering good speeds. 5G application is more in commercial domains such IoT, network slicing etc.

  • Oh awesome. I was thinking to move back to Telstra once I leave this regional QLD to the city, but here we are!

  • Where is the love for Belong customers from telstra?

  • when will they implement it fully though? only then ill upgrade my current iphone 11
for me there is no other provider that offers wifi/4g calling. (except the big 3 which are over priced, telstra optus, voda and you have to be on their expensive monthly plan not prepaid) boost is the only budget friendly provider that offers that and not to mention they are hooked up to the best reception network, telstra and the main one not the one they rent out to lesser providers like belong etc

  • I was thrilled when I got this text message! Been a Boost customer for over 3 years now.

  • +1

Still hasn’t receive the text. Hoping I’d get it soon

  • Question, what happens when you exceed the 240GB cap within the 12 months. Is there a top up option?

    • buy another 240gb plan

  • I thought their CEO said 5G is not profitable for them

    https://ausdroid.net/2022/05/21/boost-mobile-founder-peter-a…

  • My phone is showing 5G in Darwin.. What the

  • -2

What the f. I'm on boost but got no msg or 5g connectivity yet on my s22.

    Edit. https://boost.com.au/blogs/help-topics/5g-trial

They will be connecting customers gradually to 5g.

    • I found that on my S21 I hadn't selected the '5G/4G/3G/2G (auto select)' option under the 'Network mode' option under 'Mobile networks' in the 'Connections' section within 'Settings'.
I had previously only had '4G/3G/2G (auto select)' turned on.
So try Phone Settings —>Connections —>Mobile networks —>5G/4G/3G/2G (auto select)

      • All good now. I got the 5g message saying my number has access and now connected to 5g.

  • I looked into switching to Boost from Telstra 2 nights ago after reading articles published earlier in May about Boost providing 5G access to customers. Some said it was only their $70 plan, which was lesser value than Telstra's cheapest 5G plan. Their website said that they used the FULL Telstra network and there was no mention of it only being 4G. They even had a link to Telstra's 5G coverage on the page. So I did text chat with a Rep and they implied that something was going on there but all they could say was that they did not provide 5G at the moment. It sounded like something had to be resolved at their end. I was glad I didn't switch to Boost on a whim, as I also noticed that they do not support eSims for smartwatches, and that's something I'm fairly used to. I am curious as to what will happen post September - maybe they're trying to lure people into upgrading their plans if they like 5G.

  • This is a nice gesture but I'd prefer volte support for my OnePlus 8t over 5g speeds.

    • I see VoLte on my S21. Is this a specific thing on OnePlus?

      • -1

Yeah, Chinese phone that has great specs and price but poor compatibility. Boost don't support volte for this phone.

I have tried a bunch of hacks but never got it working. Sometimes cheaping out sucks!

  • two numbers are coming up for annual renewal but handsets are still in 4G so not sure would this impact me. Also anybody has idea whether Boost recharge vouchers are available at a discounted price from online - sorry if this is a wrong request in this post.

  • OMG!! Can I get a refund for my prepaid Belong?

  • Still haven't received the sms or notice the 5g connection in Sydney (north). Anyone else?

  • Off top.

Any way to use Boot Wifi Calling overseas connected to a router with AU VPN ?

    • +1

Don't need AU VPN if you have a that's fully supported.

My AU galaxy S9 can make and receive calls, but an overseas A52s can only receive text

      • Since pre-paid, I assume no roaming charges.

Did you have to pay any extra charges?

        • +1

No extra charges, just be careful with the phone.

When making calls with A52s, it says I am overseas OR using an unsupported device or something to that effect. So they have the ability to detect where you are.

Buy my AU S9+ worked flawlessly for three months on vofwifi

  • +1

FYI your phone might have 5G turned off!

I had it intentionally off to save battery but turned it on when I got the text. Zippy down but worse up in my location.

Google your phone model and how to turn 5g on/off and you'll find plenty of instructions.

  • Got this on the Telstra 1yr prepaid also

  • been on 5g for a few weeks now. no text or anything, just noticed phone showed 5g, did speed test and it was 5g :P

  • -1

I am in Perth and when I enter my address in the coverage map it's shaded in pink in the 5G tab.

However, I only get 4G on my iPhone 13

  • Nothing for me yet, no text either

  • 4G seems to be enough for OZB website

  • My S21 seems to connect to some 5G towers, and its around 70mbps, but when I switch to 4g its 90mbps… normal?

  • No 5g here

    Am in Melbourne

  • No text for 5g… or access to 5g..

  • +1

Just did a quick speed test today, cant believe myself 1035 Mbps download , 62 Mpbs upload … Insane

Now if only they could come up with esim, then it would be perfect

  • I have 5G. And have not noticed any difference to my daily llie
However I flicked my phone settings to 4G only and my battery life has improved.

    • Happy to know that I am not missing on anything

  • Day 3 review. Battery seems to be going faster. I may be limiting my phone to 4G for this reason.

    Speediest this morning was:

    -S20FE 5G - 1.1gbps
    -S20FE 4G - 500mbps

  • I'm on jbhifi mobile plan which has access to 5G. For the last year Ive been switching 5G on and off and never notice much differences in term of connection speed. 5G makes my phone a lot hotter though.
