depends how you currently cook your basmati and if you are happy with the results …. I like the convenience and foregiveness of a rice cooker but find they give a good result once you have the rice to water ratio worked out …. have a tiger, panasonic in different sizes, same result.
Very interesting. Are any of your other Rice cookers Induction? From what I've read that method yields significantly better rice, but you are (maybe) saying it doesn't?
I'd love to know as I'm mulling an Induction rice cooker but they are so expensive.for a person of non asian background i own too many rice cookers but then i don’t do just plain, sometimes also mexican rice, etc. I have the xiaomi induction which i haven’t used yet …… can’t get the app to work on my phone, not essential but display is a bit limited, I tend to stir my rice once during the cooking process about 1/2 way so don’t have the issue of the rice packing down and just cooking from the bottom if you have other than just salt and water added to the rice , only time i let it pack to the bottom is if i’m making paella and i want a crust …….xiaomi is the cheapest induction i found at the time …..
Yep. Have it and love it. Getting one for sister in law. Wife used to cook basmati rice the long way (steam, etc). but this does so well that she uses this every time now. And you dont have to cook rice in bulk and have left over for so many days. This is so simple and quick that you can cook fresh rice daily or every second day. Get it mate.
Just bought the panasonic rice cooker from amazon deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/699679. Is this better?
How is the Panasonic?
Used it twice. So far so good. Tried Jasmine and normal white rice.
I have the Panasonic and recently bought the Cuckoo. I find the Cuckoo far superior.
Why pay$154 when you can buy a rice cooker at kmart for $14??? Cook at 36 min when I can do it in 20min?
the $14 ones don’t seal the steam, the ones that seal the steam cook, go into standby and you can leave for a while …. but yeah you can get $50 ones that seal the steam …….the expensive ones have more settings but principle is the same ….when water has boiled away / been absorbed , temp goes up and they switch to keep warm …..
What does sealing the steam do?
less moisture loss … the $14 rice cookers have a glass lid and a vent hole, the $50 ones have a rubber seal in the lid that keeps more of the steam in the cooker and have a little container to catch and condense escaped steam …… so you could keep rice warm for 6 hours, but for me it's more I put rice on and go shopping and it's ready to go when I get home ….. the $14 ones are easier to clean than the $50 ones ……
I have one, good price and easy to clean. My wife paid $300 for same one. Lol
Is this any better than cooking rice in a saucepan on a stovetop? I don't see how it can get better than that, I understand maybe these devices are more for convenience and cooking a large batch and not worrying about overcooking, etc.
Another question to the rice lovers, what are people's thoughts on arborio (risotto) rice? Is there anything in the Asian world that's similar? If so, what are the dishes it's used in?
arborio is short grain that absorbs lots of water ….. japanese rice is closer than jasmine or basmati to arborio. but using japanese rice to make risotto would be expensive …. medium grain rice makes good risotto on a budget, it's what we used at cooking school restaurant and unlike the bomba rice isn't $15kg.

not sure why you got negged with no explanation ….. my mum used to cook great rice in a saucepan, 60 years of cooking for the family and never owned a rice cooker, and chefs still do on many cooking shows as not everybody has a rice cooker or experience, it comes down to skill and experience vs convenience. The saucepan has the advantage of being dishwasher friendly and rugged, (stainless steel) and often comes with 20 year warranty …. rice cooker not so rugged or as long a warranty or as easy to clean but convenient, no need to worry about boiling dry if you get distracted on your phone while the rice is cooking. Some people can't cook rice in a saucepan so assume nobody else can either. I use a rice cooker personally as it's easier, not because of better results.
get the same arguement from thermomix owners when I say "why not just use a pot and a spoon" pot comes with a great warranty …… instead of a $2300 mixer / blender with a heating element and not so great warranty ……
it comes down to skill and experience vs convenience
This ☝️
It's the convenience, so you do understand ;)
Set and forget, also keeps rice warm and ready to serve, different people can eat any time they want.
Is this worth it for someone who eats a lot of basmati rice?
