    Does this support dual sim?

    EDIT: Single SIM + E-SIM

    • Yes

      • -3

From what I read on Telstra, it seems like you can't use both SIMs at the same time. One has to be dormant while the other is active, which kind of makes it more of a convenient SIM storage solution rather than proper dual SIM :(

        • +6

          Uh no.

I have the phone and have my Amaysim + Telstra eSIM active. I can select either sim when calling/texting and can receive calls and texts from both numbers.

I actually have three eSIMs added, I can switch the esims on the fly as if I were switching physical sims.

          • -2

@wizko: Oh really? I found this on Telstra's E-SIM page, under the "Things You Need to Know" Section:

"Dual SIM compatible devices: When one mobile service is being used, the second mobile service becomes inactive. This means you can only receive calls and texts, or use data, on one service at a time. Call forwarding can be set up so you don't miss any calls when either service is inactive."

So if I'm understanding this correctly, with your phone, you're able to:

            1) Receive calls / texts from both numbers simultaneously
            2) Make calls / send texts from either number

            • +1

@poppingtags: I'm guessing depends on the phone brand and model, maybe their just covering their arses but I'd love to hear from above also with his/her s21 šŸ‘šŸ˜

              • +3

@Italkdigital: I am using an S10+ with dual (physical) SIM.

When I am on the phone with SIM1. SIM2 will not recieve text messages. After hanging up the text message will come through.

If I have mobile data set on SIM2 and I receive a call on SIM1 I wont be able to access mobile data whilst on the call. (Unless I am connected to wifi)

If I receive call on SIM1 and my data is set on SIM1 then I can use the internet.

If I am not on any calls, then I can receive text messages on both numbers. I cant say what the delay is between receiving texts though.
Ie if you text SIM1 and then SIM2 not sure how long before 2nd text comes through.

            • +1

@poppingtags: I believe most phones only have the one antenna so it switches between the two polling for the calls/texts

I've found that with dual sim iPhone SE that you can miss calls entirely and it probably depends on when it was polling, so if your phone ring time is set to a lowish number its possible to not even know the call was made to you until you get the missed call text

              had this happen numerous times.

In addition if you received a call on a line that wasn't the 4G one, your internet would cut out

Its a different story when you, the user holding the phone initiates a text or a call. It may seem like its capable of doing both but its actually switching between the two

As above, that was on iPhone SE 2020, maybe other phone models will vary

        • +1

I have the s21u and use telstra esim and optus SIM at the same time.

Have to set data to whichever u want to send mms but can use either at the same time. Receive or send text and calls

        • My input from this comment i think what poppingtags saying is correct

you cannot use both sim at the same time

I am using my s21u with vodafone as esim and telstra as the normal sim, if im on a call on my vodafone sim then the telstra sim would not ring, call waiting does not work on two sims at the same time

You can however use both sim at the same time for data to boost the speed

This is $592 at JB tomorrow also. Seems they have a lot of this colour to get rid of.

  • Damn that's cheap

  • Just brought from JB now this what to do?

JB offer full refund on cancellation

    • +2

I think JB hi-fi has 14 day price match/protection post sales. You can go in store with receipt and get the difference

      • Yes I found it thanks I also remember now yeat back it happen same on 75" tv so would not that hard to receive refund šŸ‘Œ

        • Not willing to do match with Harvey crap

  • +4

Oof cheap, yet quick search finds its still not much of a step up from my S20 FE 5g

    • Love my S20 FE. Great size and just works quick enough or everything I do.

    • Downgrade in what way?

        • +2

S8 has higher ppi density due to the smaller screen, but everything else you mentioned doesn't seem right… 120Hz refresh rate for the s21, hdr10+, more powerful cameras all round, improved processor… Maybe it's a case of getting a phone that wasn't picked up by quality control?

          • @spacemannn: The S8+ (and S8) has a 1440p screen vs a 1080p+ screen on the S21, so it's not just PPI that's different, it's the actual resolution.

Having said that, the S21 is better than the S8+ in every other way.

          • +19

@crunchyhead: 100% agree crunchy, especially hate it when those morons use facts to dispute feelings.

            • -1

@heal: Well firstly mate, the 1080p display on this phone is the LOWEST resolution that an S series phone has ever had… Let that FACT heal you!
And secongly he was describing a user experience not providing engineering data.

Thirdly the "torches and pitchfork" mob in this community consistently Mega-Negs anyone who has an opinion that either doesn't agree with them or they just feel like attacking for the hell of it. Perhaps A/Holes would have been more appropriate than morons.

It's like you people LIVE for the little red censor button. A button which I believe should probably not even exist. It always stunned me that you need to strictly justify negging a product but can screw over a commenter on any NASTY little whim that you like.

PLEASE neg away… I will be disappointed if you don't!

              • @crunchyhead:

That is fact you mentioned. I have no problem with people stating their opinions and feelings anecdotally. Just don't get upset when someone disagrees with you.

100% agree with you there. Most neg and don't post because they don't want to be the target of vitriol. Do you see where I'm going here?

Wow. BTW i didn't neg you. I called you out for name calling because you got upset over another member stating some facts over feelings. And you've doubled down with some nastiness directed towards me.

I have an S8 and it's been fantastic for everything I want to do, but I still am tempted to 'upgrade' to this just because it's a bargain, apparently. Guess I should wait until I actually need a new phone.

      • -7

You'd waste your money. I only bought it because a toddler smash her screen.

      • +1

Every year the phones get better (performance, camera quality, Snapdragon/Exynos etc)
Best to wait if you donā€™t need it now

    • -6

To your surprise, I bought it last May on her birthday for 650$ ish lol brand new sealed, so it's noting new for me, it'll probably drop more.

    • I did the same upgrade and it's a massive improvement

  • Does anyone know if/how does JB Hi Fi would price match this, given that a gift card is included?

    • Unlikely

    • Yeah doubt it, just buy from Harvey Norman?

  • +4

Can anyone work their Oz bargain magic and get this price lower??
Possibly using price beats and discounted gift cards? Or any other discounts. If there's a way I'm sure there is someone on here who can do it.
    Thank in advance

    • +1

The only possible way to get a price beat is Officeworks, but itā€™s showing ā€œUnavailable Onlineā€ on their website

ShopBack doesnā€™t stock Harvey Norman gift cards sadly either

  • How does the S21 5G compared to the S21 FE 5G

    • +1

      S21 5G: 8GB RAM, 6.2" adaptive display 48 to 120Hz, 4,000 mAh battery, 64 megapixel telephoto & 10 megapixel front camera.

      S21 FE 5G: 6GB RAM, 6.4" locked display 60 or 120Hz, 4,500 mAh battery, 8-megapixel telephoto & 32 megapixel front camera.

    • +1

S21 Fe has much longer software support ( 4 years left versus 2)

      • How do you know that?

As far as I can tell it is 4 years of OS support for both phones and since S21 was released a year earlier the difference is one year, not two.

        Jan 2021 vs Jan 2022.

  • Thanks Op! Bought it as a Christmas present lmao

    • +1

the time when christmas come, i think the price will be even more cheaper :D

      • I hope not! :P

        • It will, android phones' prices will just tank like that.

  • +1

Looking to upgrade my S10 to take photos on when I plan on travelling by the end of the year, should I hold off from buying until then and hope for cheaper/better deals?

  • +2

Currently looking to replace my tired old S8 but cautious about this one as I assume it suffers the same issues as the comments from this JB HiFi thread :(

    • +1

If the issue you are talking about is battery life, read on.

If it is not about battery life, ignore this.

Sadly it is going to be a while before graphite batteries become a common thing, so until then, heavy users are going to keep complaining for a phone with amazing battery life even under heavy usage (that doesn't exist).

Here is a battery test video with last year~this years phones under medium~heavy usage:
      https://youtu.be/jQP5lA2UZOU

      They last around 7.5~9hours.

All the terds complaining on that thread think one phone is significantly longer lasting than the other for some reason but they are all mostly the same.

EDIT: Nvm, they seem to be talking about exynos vs snapdragon, which may be a valid point.

    • Same here, except S8 Plus here.

  • How this compare to Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro?

  • How do you claim the gift card?

    • +1

Physical gift card will be included in the delivery or will be handed over with the device upon collection

  • Just bought on if these https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/702042
Wondering whether I should return it and stump up the extra $ for this instead. Thoughts?

  • +1

Thought this could be a good upgrade for my s9+ but no expandable storage is a deal breaker.

Also pixel density is worse on the 21 on a smaller display?? Not that I'd notice.

  • -1

    this is not even Ultra

  • Only 2 more major OS update left for this phone

S21 FE comes with 4 remaining

    • +2

It isn't number of OS updates, it is 4 years of One UI updates and 5 years of security updates. So S21 has almost 3 years left of One UI updates, and S21 FE has almost 4 years of One UI updates.

      https://news.samsung.com/us/samsung-galaxy-os-upgrade-one-uiā€¦

I've already discussed this with silenthillrocks, but for anyone reading this, this is the updated information.

  • Waiting patiently for new phone with the new chipset…

  • Purchased this with the $20 HN GC from the last switch sports deal making it $604

  • +1

Just keep in mind there is no micro sd card support on this phone so you are limited to the 128gb.

    • +1

OTG usb works fine for extra storage

  • +2

Funny thing, I talked to a customer service rep from Harvey Norman last night asking if they could price match JB's price, but he said he couldn't as it was too far below market value. Then today they not only price matched it but are offering a $100 gift card on top of it

    • +2

Gerry doesn't let his peasants know what's really going on. The figure they show you on the screen showing their cost is bollocks - it excludes rebates from suppliers and head office slush fund take.

      • well jb hifi and basically every other retailer is the same, its cost to the store, not to the business as a whole

        • Yes I know - but the question was specifically about HN. You seem to be a little sensitive about criticism of Gerry?

    • From my experience, if anything is ever worth price matching, Harvey Norman will say no.

  • +1

How much did people pay a year ago from samsung with eds/cds $250/$150 discount and trade in bonuses?

    • +2

Less than $200 (that was with trading in a S10e). It was with $500 bonus trade in, $200 bonus + the trade in for S10e. I know some people elected not to send the phone in and repay the trade in difference.

  • Would this be a good upgrade from note10+?(aside from screen size, will try to go with it) as its starting to be laggy.

  • How's the audio quality on the phones these days?
I have an LG V30+ which I bought back in 2019 primarily for it's quad dac and HD codecs when connecting via BT. I guess other phones would be doing the quality codecs these days?

  • +1

Would this be good to buy just to trade in for a s22 ultra

    • +1

You can get $350 trade in value for the S21 5g 128gb currently and on that main Samsung website there is a current $400 trade in bonus.
350+400-524=$226 off. Still more worth it to just buy the s22 ultra through the education store if you can.

  • How many more years of OS updates for the S21? Is it 2 years?

    • +1

      Only 2, S21FE gets 4.

      • While I get that's the situation on paper, how realistic is that? With the same CPUs, Samsung would work on updates only for FE?

Also, if you really care about OS updates, go Apple devices.

        • Yup, Apple still the kings of longevity - and this is coming from a long term Android user

          • +1

@poppingtags: I am on both camps. However, I don't see Android OS updates as important as iOS ones. Majority of the Android apps will still work, whereas with iOS, you do need to be on reasonably new iOS in order to get some of the latest key apps (including Chrome).

Also, Apple did a kill switch on one of my older iPhones. I had it on an iOS that is capable of running 32-bit apps intentionally. However, after the remote zap, I was forced to update to the latest iOS (in order to keep on using the phone) and now losing any ability to run 32-bit apps.

        • Not based on CPU, even lower end a33 gets 4 years support.

          • @silenthillrocks: He pointed out S21 already received 2 updates? So that leaves 2 more. A bit confused, I thought S21 hasn't got Android 13 yet?

            • @netsurfer: S21 has only received 1 but is capped at 3.

In 2022 Samsung updated their policy for new phones so s21 Fe will be capped at 4.

              • @silenthillrocks: Right, so S21 FE will be so great after 4 years with awesome battery life. Here, we still get the Exynos CPU.

                • @netsurfer: S21 Fe also has Exynos but with 500mAh bigger battery and 0.3 inch bigger screen

                  • @silenthillrocks: And it is worth the extra $$$ now? It's just one gen CPU behind no matter how you try to sugarcoat it.

                    • @netsurfer: The Exynos will be fine for the average user. Price wise decent value with the price drops of late.

                      • @silenthillrocks: Would like S21 FE priced lower still. Samsung basically cut cost for S21, S22 series by lowering the screen resolution. I get the refresh rate bump is good, but it now feels Samsung selling better screens to Apple.
