Shun Classic Knife Block Set 5pce $350.40 + Delivery (Was $438) @ Peter's of Kensington eBay

210
P20KEN

Was doing some research and looking at Global knife block set and came across this set. My take on knife block sets are usually some of the knives are not as useful but with this set, they all seem pretty good especially when the whole set is ~$350 as some of the individual knives are $150+

The set contains:
8.5cm Paring Knife.
16.5cm Santoku Knife. (note: the picture on the item page shows this is as DM0718, which is actually 18cm)
20cm Chef's Knife.
Multi-purpose Kitchen Shears.
Hardwood storage block.

Any idea where these are made? Not japan, I’m assuming, given that they are not prominently displaying that on the packaging?

    • Japan

    • The knives are designed and made in Japan

  • Any cheap knife stand ? like $15ish generic brand recommendation ?

Everyone gets sad from time to time, sharp Japanese knives should not be within easy sight lines in the house. Just saying, keep it in the drawer.

    • Are you wanting to display them or just to keep them safe?

I would go with cork sheets in your drawer if it's the latter.

      • no just to put them somewhere on the bench top so its safe, and easily accessible, something like this deal item is great, (only need like 2 knife slots max needed) but just way too expensive, brand name i think tax. Cork sheet idea is fine too But usually my drawers are way to full from other family member stuff, so drawer is not the likely place to be for kitchen in my home

Something like this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/203450971356 seems good, might add to watch list for the next shopback spend bonus challenge

Thanks! I just paid a little extra ($503 delivered) for the Shun Premier 6 piece set which comes with:
    8 Slot Kanso Block
    10cm Paring Knife
    16.5cm Utility Knife
    17.8cm Santoku Knife
    20cm Chef's Knife

And in my opinion, prettier if that means anything to you!

Added value in lifetime free sharpening at Shun if anyone needs more justification for buying either. Although I haven't experienced this myself as I just purchased today.

While I share your sentiments OP regarding knife block sets, I would argue the knives you get in this particular set are good value for home kitchens.

Some people feel intimidated by using the 20cm chefs knife to cut vegetables so they much rather use the santoku, pairing knife and shears are always handy.

Pretty worthwhile set if you're into getting a set of decent knives that will last you a long time

    • Thank you KnifeEnthusiastBoi, I was actually reading your comments/reviews from few years ago before I pulled the trigger. Didnt expect you to comment on this post haha

I have also purchased a Global G5 vegetable knife which also fits in this block

  • General consensus on r/chefknives is that Shun is overpriced and you can get better value elsewhere.

    • Probably true pre-covid inflation but now $150 for vg10 knife seems about right
