I'm just getting started with Home Assistant on the rpi4, but can I stick this into my rpi4 USB and it'll just give me access to Zigbee devices?

    • -2

No, you will find issues with interference.

      • an extension USB cable is recommended, but your "mileage" may vary.

        • but that is what these are for, i'm using similar, with zigbee2mqtt.
you could use deconz as in the youtube video below, or the homeassistant add-on ZHA

There's some setup involved, but once done, yes : you get local, combined control of your zigbee devices.

        • is that the same for rpi3 or just rpi4? My conbee seems to work OK with rpi3 but if you reckon a USB extension will improve performance, will do so :)

@bdl: It's the same for all. Also, make sure you use a USB 2.0 port. USB 3.0 ports are proven to interfere with 2.4Ghz signals.

            • @Tacooo: Thankyou

              • +1

@bdl: Just repeating what the others said, use an extension cable and use the USB2.0 ports, and it’ll work well. Got mine running in HomeAssistant using ZHA and it runs fine.

    • Yes, works great - but use a USB extension cable. Even a short one.

Sonoff ZigBee 3.0 is superior and less than half the price. Go for the Sonoff. It's the logical upgrade path from the Conbee

      • And if you already have a conbee? Worth switching?

I have conbee and just bought sonoff zb 3.0.

Tried the new shiny sonoff with zigbee2mqtt, there is always a delay with switching the light on and off with sonoff.

Was tested conbee and sonoff with:
          - light switch 1.5m from the dongle, connected directly with the dongle
          - dongle plugged to 3m usb extender
          - zb channel 11
          - 2.4g wifi at channel 11 to ensure no interference

There was no issue flicking the switch on and off with conbee 10 times in a row within 10 sec.

It was fine with zigbee2mqtt to switch on and off for about 4x, everything was instant. Then the switch stop responding for about 10-20 seconds and the light switched on and off 6x by itself.

The same thing happened during automation, the same switch responded after 10 sec or not responded to the automation at all.

Tested with ikea bulb 5m away as well, same issue.

          Back to deconz now

          • @xphonerz: Did you update to the latest firmware?

            • @at9: I did. Latest coordinator firmware with date 2022-02-19.

      • where are you seeing them for ~$25 delivered? I'm getting about AUD$37 delivered direct from itead.cc

        • +1

Got mine for AUD 23 delivered in 1 week from ebay au. Cheaper than getting it from itead.cc.

Cant recommend it though due to zigbee2mqtt issue above

          • @xphonerz: Try ZHA?
New firmware supports 200 ZigBee 3.0 devices and +20db transmit power

            • @0 0 0: I wanted to use zigbee2mqtt due to extensive number of supported devices. I used the latest corrdinator firmware from 2022-02-19

              • @xphonerz: ZHA has pretty good support. What devices aren't supported by ZHA that you use?

      • Same. I had no problem. Even used it to make $100 T-Lock HomeKit compatible using zigbee2mqtt (after multiple false starts with other physical zigbee hubs). There is a slight delay with the lock while the rest of devices (light , switch etc) have instant response. I will try upgrading the firmware.

        • Yes this is quite strange as I have the exact same problem with my Tlocks. Worked instantly on Smartthings but with HA and Sonoff via ZHA it takes ages

    • I have this plugged into my rpi4 using home assistant, works well.

  • I just received my Sonoff USB 3.0 ZigBee gateway on Thursday and set it up. Really good for $20 from AliExpress. (It serves the same purpose as this. )

  • I bought the conbee and set everything up, lots of signal issues and dropouts and general headaches. Sold it on ebay for a loss and bought a SONOFF. No dramas since and everything is working perfectly. Get the SONOFF.

    • Guessing you had yours plugged directly into a USB 3.0 port?

      • Nope, had it plugged into a USB 2 on a raspi with a 1m long USB extension. Used the same port and cable for the SONOFF and no issues.

  • +1

    SONOFF And zigbee2mqtt ftw

    • Do you have any issue with zigbee2 mqtt when switching light on and off like 10 times in a row?

      • No

        • Cool - probably only affect certain configurations

  • Also coming from conbee, it’s not the worst but it ant the best

  • +1

Using sonoff 3.0 with HA using zigbee2mqtt fine

  • +1

I have one of these and started out using ZHA - all sorts of issues. Then I upgraded the firmware and moved to Zigbee2MQTT and it now works absolutely perfectly.

  • Conbee? I will use this when i go to prison to automate the lock on my cell door, and the main gate lock in to the jail. Great, thanks!
