    • Unlucky. Theres a few around, depending on your location.

    • Cranbourne VIC showing stock, although that's about 25km away from me.

  • No stock in South and West Sydney areas :(

  • Stock at Belmont and Clarkson in WA

Belmont gone. Clarkson too far away.

Good to see some of the people I'm competing with for low stock items in Perth. :D

Requires wiring from transformer to outside.
Requires subscription service (free for 3mth) for some features.

    • What wiring - most would have wireless doorbells.

Plenty of houses have regular doorbells so there's no point in them paying for a battery they won't use.

Those without wires can buy the battery-powered model.

Requires subscription service (free for 3mth) for some features.

It's good for people who already have Arlo cameras as the Arlo plans cover all devices.

      • Yes but most Australian doorbells don’t do the 16 to 20V AC that these require, that’s why they have sold poorly and many returned.
They are better than the wireless in their detection capabilities though as they are always on

        • Yes but most Australian doorbells don’t do the 16 to 20V AC that these require

Installing a wired smart doorbell will require rewiring at the indoor side. If someone is cluey enough to do that, they're probably able to buy the right transformer. If they're not, they'll get a sparky who would definitely know what to do.

that’s why they have sold poorly and many returned.

How do you know many have been returned?

They are better than the wireless in their detection capabilities though as they are always on

The biggest advantage is probably not having to recharge it every month or two.

        • transformer included in the box
Just attach it to existing wiring instead of current power supply.

          • @INFIDEL: Well there you go, that's even easier. So it doesn't even matter what voltage the old doorbell runs on.

            • @eug: Ah, but my doorbell is wireless😉

              • @INFIDEL:

Ah, but my doorbell is wireless😉

Then this product is not for you. They make a battery-powered model for people without wired doorbells.

            • @eug: transformer only in the box in Europe as they acknowledged their doorbells didn't have the correct voltage not in Australian box

          • @INFIDEL: transformer only in the box in Europe as they acknowledged their doorbells didn't have the correct voltage

            • @rpb: So Deal Description is incorrect.
              That would annoy buyers!

              • @INFIDEL: I know!
But the listing of box contents is correct, its just the errant sentence "Wired Video Doorbell installation"

                • @rpb: TGG description shows includes "Power Kit"…

I've got a bin of suitable AC power packs & so much cable, so not an issue for me.

                  • @INFIDEL: Ah, that's where they fool you. The "power kit" is a weird bypass capacitor to put in your existing door chime that already has the correct voltage.

I do have one, I wanted another one for the father in law.

                    • @rpb: Glad we sorted that out - was not as promoted. A capacitor isn't a "Power Kit"!

Off to the ACCC for Deceptive Advertising🤣

                      • @INFIDEL: Lol, yeah I knew what I was getting in for (Ive got the hub and the 4k Ultra 2 cameras and wanted the doorbell that would show up on the AppleTV) but I suspect a few people had a go.
I even find the instructions ridiculous where they are telling you to get a multimeter and read the voltage of the wires you've just exposed after removing your old button 🙄

                        • @rpb: They covered themselves by advising have an electrician install it.

Paying for transformer & installation would make this a much costlier purchase.

Expect they got a few returns. Complaints would just result in refund.

Great, just bought something I didn't really need from a store that is 45kms away that I may not be able to get to for a couple of weeks…

    • +2

      That's the spirit.

      • Yeah buy now think later !
I just need to arrange a family trip out that will include a little detour…

  • +1

How useful is this without the subscription?

    • +1

without the object detection, prolly alot of false detections giving constant notifications resulting in the turning off of notifications, negating the whole point of it.

      • The original point of a video doorbell is to see who's ringing the doorbell before you decide if you want to answer it. If that's all they want then it's fine.

The recording and object detection features are the cherries on top. They're definitely useful, but not everyone might care about it.

        • +1

"The original point of a video doorbell"
Do you mean 20 years ago? As in 2 decades ago?

Or should I give a current day response within the context of modern technology and expectations?

My $15 ipcam and $45 NVR I purchased off Amazon provides human detection and face detection without a subscription service. It notifies me on the app when motion is detected and if I wanted a door bell I can buy a $5 doorbell and use the app when it rings.

This is a $289 MSRP device that a modern consumer should expect to provide a fuller feature set within the cost of purchase.

          • @Daddy: It's important to keep in mind that people discussing smart doorbells on an online forum is not necessarily representative of the rest of the population.

People who participate in online discussions are more likely to be a little more technically-minded, so they may assume that everybody places the same amount of importance on a doorbell with facial recognition and object detection.

In reality, the vast majority of homeowners today don't care about video doorbells, much less one that is connected to the cloud and requires a subscription.

Of those who are interested in a video doorbell, there's definitely a good number who just want to see who's at the door when it rings. They do not care about cloud connectivity or recording. To them, the "whole point of it" is just that - to see who's at the door when it rings.

Offices can use video doorbells simply to see who's ringing the doorbell before they release the door lock. It's normally part of the access control system, but smaller offices without a more integrated solution can use this too. There is no need for facial recognition or object detection in that use case.

So whilst features like object detection are useful to you and me, not everybody is like you and me.

FWIW the person recognition on my Nest cameras give me plenty of false alerts. It has improved in the past year, but I still get shadows or moving plants detected as people. Having so many false alarms defeats the purpose of having object recognition as I just start ignoring alerts.

The jaycar one is better. Arlo actually recommend more milliamps than that amazon one but their recommendations are all over the place.

      I have this one: https://www.altronics.com.au/p/m9325a-powertran-16v-ac-1.38a…

      • Nice, I just grabbed a random cheap example so people had a better idea of what it may cost

    What stores have stock now?

  • So, is there no way to make this work from my existing doorbell?

  • JB wont price match as its clearance product, anywhere else to go?

  • The wire free version says works with amazon show https://www.amazon.com.au/Arlo-Essential-Wire-free-Detection…
Will this wired one also, and without subscription? I don't mind if I have to tell the "show the front door", without it being triggered.
Other suggestions (reasonably-priced) welcome - been looking at this for a while, pref. not subscription-required
Guess the wireless Ring would be cheaper, once electrician factored-in on this Arlo….

    • once electrician factored-in on this Arlo….

Very easy to wire up yourself (low voltage), but need to add cost of transformer.

      • Thanks, but no wiring (doorbell) present at all, would need to run the wiring from somewhere -I could maybe re-purpose a nearby spotlight circuit I'm not using anymore, but my Insurance would say I'm not qualified. Extra for wire-free seems more reasonable when I think of it that way…

        • +1

Wiring is just 2 thin wires (carrying low voltage) from inside to outside.

Same as installing wires for a basic battery operated doorbell, with doorbell inside & button outside. Those are sold as DIY. Almost anyone can do it.

On inside transformer plug pack is plugged into power point. Low voltage wires from it go to outside - to this doorbell.

Very simple & safe. No insurance risk - as is low voltage connection. Power plug pack is protected inside, not connected to power outside house!

And no batteries to recharge with wired unit.

          Maybe watch a video.

          • +1

@INFIDEL: Thanks for the detailed run-through - I thought it would be hard-wired, not to a power point. But, we have no power point near the front door, so would still need an electrician (to be covered/compliant).
I'm sure your instructions will have helped others, too! +1!

    Thanks OP!
I finally picked mine up on Saturday and I wasn't surprised to find that the box had been already opened but the unit looked unused, only the camera lens protective cover had been removed, so its probably likely someone returned it after realising it was a more complicated and expensive install.
I got kind of lucky with my installation as I realised I had an old alarm system wired up with a movement sensor above the door next to the existing doorbell chime. The alarm system had a 16V AC 1.5A power supply, the doorbell chime supported 16V AC and the wiring all reached where it needed to go. It still did take me a few hours to get it all installed and working, but it was actually pretty easy once I worked out how it should all go together.
When I turned the power on for the doorbell it flashed white and amber which according to the app meant an insufficient power supply and it would need 10 minutes to charge up the internal battery before working. But within 20 seconds it actually turned solid white, connected to the app and a few minutes later it was operating nicely.
Anyway, I'm quite impressed for $44 and just wanted to really say thanks OP!
