  • Are these on par with the likes of Weller etc?

    i’d go with a ts100 over this

    • Excellent soldering iron, heats up so fast

Just got a pinecil. So good. Wish I got one earlier.

  • I had one of these. It wasn't great. I ended up getting a Hakko down the line.

  • Would be interesting if it's got a transformer (expensive) or is switch mode (cheap)

Have a box full of Ali type soldering irons now ….. none are as good as my weller, and there is variation between the brands for the soldering iron although they look like a hakko handle. Some are 4 pin, some are 5 pin and the pin outs vary ….. At least with the Yihua I can get a new handle with right pins as they put their brand on the ones they sell.

Advantage of Jaycar is that you can go in on a saturday and get a new handle or tips, or take back if not hap

This is a rubbish value unit.
A generic Chinese iron for what is not a huge stretch from the price point of a genuine Hakko FX888D ($66 difference).

My soldering experience if it helps anyone.

I own a TS100 and even though it's tip range is limited it thermally matches the Hakko running 12v and smashes it at 24v.
These are easily powered for performance from an old laptop charger (often around 19-21v) modified with suitable plug.

The TS80 i hear good things about, but have not had hands on experience with.
It seems generally superseded by the USB PD capable TS80P.

The TS80P, supports USB power delivery, has better ergonomics and shorter grip to tip distance.
Whilst the tool is great, some of the included USB cables have been junk and have failed to trigger PD on the power supply.
Just something to be aware of.
The TS80P claims lower power than the TS100, but in practice it performs closely enough that it's not notable.

Last option, i have no personal experience with, the Pinecil.
In theory is sounds good and is cheap, and i ordered one about 3-4 months back.
Alas… it never arrived, and Pine never replied to my multiple queries on the issue.
A month after the last query i had to make a paypal claim, and got a full refund 2 days later.

My daily bench driver is a JBC CD-2BQF, another league in general, mentioning for reference.
Previously was a Hakko FX888D and before that a Hakko 936 if i recall correctly.

If i could currently pick only 1 backup portable based on hands on experience it would be the TS80P.
The Pinecil being a maybe but with the non delivery of product or support I'm hesitant to try ordering again.

  • chinese t12 ksger/quecoo would be much better value i think for around $US60

  • I have no experience with these but they use JBC like tips…

  • If you are going to spend $100, you may as well get a rework station with hot air gun.

I bought something like this one; (with 10 different tips).

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/154679303485
It has a Power supply function as well, only 1A though, it has the ammeter, it actually can be a voltmeter as well.

What I used it for most so far was to strip paint on delicate smaller pieces, works a treat, controlled hot air. Handy for heat shrink too. Also good for softening putty on old house windows.

I have had poor results due to my lack of hot air soldering experience. Makes a mess and melts the plastic connectors…. Sometimes a soldering iron does a better job. But do need this for certain soldering jobs, may need a microscope with that job.
