  • Is a customer still considered new if they haven’t been with ABB for a whole 6 months?

  • +88

Seems like a penalty for being loyal customer

    • +11

Yeah, thinking the same. Once they have you, incentives or dangling carrots are no longer required.

      • +2

        Copying from Telstra!

    • +16

Nothing new. Businesses do this in every field. Why give a discount to a customer whose been there years? It's their bread and butter.

Regardless, new user discounts are NBN discounts if I'm not mistaken anyway.

      • +2

Regardless, new user discounts are NBN discounts if I'm not mistaken anyway.

You're probably confusing it with the 'Focus on Fast' promotion that ran last year that basically gave many a 6 month discount on Home Fast/Superfast/Ultrafast services.. I don't believe this one has any promotional rebate from NBNCo behind it.

In theory ABB does not take too bad a hit on the 6-month $20 off promotions, if their conversion rates are better than the 1-month free ones. The 1-month free promos have a higher risk of leaving them holding the bag when it comes to paying the base AVC cost + however much CVC overage you contributed, if you do a runner to another RSP when the month ends. (I know some here have jumped around to/from Superloop when they had overlapping promos?)

      • +9

Amaysim improves my mobile plan every now and then, for no extra cost

        • Improves yes, but I bet they don't discount them.

Can't improve an unlimited data service with highly regarded customer service….

    • +3

penalty for the loyal and poor. The promotion is only for 100mbps package and higher.

    • +8

Of course, keep changing the providers and never being loyal to any businesses.

      • +10

You could imagine my horror when I found out my disabled sister was on a Mobile Plan paying around $50pm with $50 of included calls, one of those archaic things that paid off a dinosaur of a phone…. probably was on the plan for half a dozen years or more till I corrected that.

Companies absolutely love the people who stick around.

I've made the big mistake of sticking with AGL for energy and got shafted for years, recently switched, happy as.

        • Looking for energy deals myself. Which provider?

          • +4

@Momoni: Depends on your location. Different for each house.
            Use this https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/

            • +1

              @Mi2: I’ve been using this: https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

              • @Momoni: It’s the same thing.
Haven’t you got your answer just yet?

                • @Mi2: I have narrowed down to a few deals from the comparison sites. Was thinking you may have one worth looking at as you are happy with it - the provider, not necessarily the plan - as part of some overall current customer acquisition drive.

              • @Momoni: Yeah I switched with that from memory, the only thing that confused me was the different rates for different people….. so peak off peak etc etc which I can't obtain. But apparently I'll save $400 odd a year, so I switched….. seems ok atm, though I do hate monthly billing and gas reading estimates

                • @scuderiarmani: I’m curious, why?

                  • @Ulysses31: I can't remember the term, but some people can access variable rates depending on time of the day, I can't. Nfi why and how that's fair.

          • @Momoni: Once you find a cheap provider you really have to keep changing every 6-12 months. The cheap energy providers lure you in with cheap rates and then continue to jack your rate up as time goes on. It’s worse than mortgage rates.

    • +3

100/40 deal isn't even that good. Superloop just gave me $80/month for it so I don't leave. Random email too. Didn't even reach out.

      • How can you get 100/40 plan as $80?. It's $100.

        • They sent me a random email offering it, as my 6 months previous deal was about to end.

        • I think I am paying 90 for now, its some kind of discounted plan if you call them

        • +3

Between a referral bonus and a random discount, I've been paying $79.96 for my 100/40 connection with SL for close to a year.
Rock solid and a godsend as both of us have essentially worked from home for the last 6 months.

    • +4

That's the problem with NBN ISPs they are stuck in the past.

Back in ADSL days it sucked to change ISP so once they got you you'd stay, these days on NBN it takes 5min to change ISPs so they really should be working on customer retention but they only care about new customers so no reason to not switch ISPs every 6 months.

      • +1

Or every 2 months with Origin/Telstra 2 months free.

        • Yep, connected to telstra today. Now to find something for 2 months time…

    • Why you need to be loyal to a business?

    • +7

Yep, I'm leaving this month. Back to Superloop.
Just have to keep jumping between providers as they have no loyalty to us.. So why should we?

      • Is it really that easy to keep jumping? I am with superloop because they only need a router to connect which I already have. But most ISPs need an extra modem which is not free.
Or it takes a day or two to connect.

        • +3

most NBN providers in my experience took 2 hours to connect a new service. BYO modems are ok in most of the time too. Just try and you will understand. :)

    • I do have to agree here

It's bloody bullshit, that company's entice new customers in,but if you been with someone like aussie for years, you get told to suck it pay the full price..

There is zero reason to stay long term with company's these day's as loyalty is not rewarded

    • This also disappoints me a lot. I am on the 1000/50 plan. I often see new customers get discounts and at times see customers on lower speed plans get to move to a higher plan for a short period, because of some event. But there has never been anything for people on the top plan. We pay the most, yet never benefit from any offer. Outside of AB offering to give some money to charity.
Well times are getting tough, would it hurt every now and again just to show us how much you appreciate our business. Especially the loyal ones that have stuck around for a while.

    • Just change provider every six months to take advantage of all the deals. I switch between 3 providers (including Aussie BB) who offer discounts for first 6 months.

      • After reading a lot of these comments, where people change often I am considering it. I do it with my insurance, electricity etc all the time, why not internet. I think it is the thought of moving from something that is working to something that may potentially be an issue. Providers are hit and miss sometimes. You can see that with comments where someone will love a provider and then there will be people that are having issues. There are so many factors that could contribute to an issue. Are there a lot of people using that provider in my area and the CVC is congested. You just don't know.
But as I said, with times getting tougher, it is hard to justify paying over $150 for internet a month.

      • Y'all make posts like this W/out any details….

    • exactly why I left ABB - an offer the left me out. But hey, now I can come back. Just have to keep chasing deals.

  • +3

is it rude/normal to flick between ISP's every 6 months or so?

I'm kinda old school and stay with my ISP unless they stuffup royally… but seeing these deals I feel like i could be saving myself a decent wad by flicking between ABB and superloop etc.

    • +5

It's your $$, I believe you have every right. I just switched from my non-existent service by Optus to Mate and from Mate to More, all within a month.

    • +3

It can be a hassle, and can depend on which tech you’re on. I’ve recently chased some deals: ABB to Origin for 2 months free with Origin. Origin to Telstra for 2 months at $1 ea. Telstra was a nightmare. They churned on the wrong date. They never sent out the modem/router which is required to activate a service with Telstra. I’m on HFC so can only have one active connection at a time.

If I start chasing deals again I’ll call up the ISP the morning of the day I want to move and will only move if it’s a same day churn. It also has to be a day that ms_sween64 isn’t home as she needs the internet for work.

I’m currently with Origin but their prices are higher than ABB and they don’t provide an account portal. However, their customer service has been fantastic. Of course Origin is just white labelled ABB and I’m pretty sure it’s the same customer service and tech support.

      • +1

I'm currently living out the Telstra $1 nbn disaster, churned 6 days after my requested date, after I cancelled it on the 3rd day as my previous ISP was already cancelled. Now just waiting for the 50k points to bank before I cancel again

        • +1

On the 5 May I requested a churn date of 17 May. On the 10 May I woke up to no internet as they had attempted to churn my service then. I spoke with Origin who were excellent and reinstated my service within a few hours. I then had a phone call from Telstra on 16 May, I couldn't understand them because the reception was horrendous. I simply stated several times that I wanted to cancel my order.

          What tech are you on?

          • @sween64: Asus rt68u, but I'm on the 250 plan and it only gets up to 111 anyway. They keep asking me to plug in the modem but I'm not going there anytime soon so nfi when the service will change from pending to active.

I got a reference when I 1st cancelled the plan and she gave me the order number. Turns out, that wasn't even my order number and when they connected on the 16th it messed up their internet all day until I went over at night to reset it. F'n ridiculous. But I just wanna try out the 100 plan to see how fast my fttn can actually get up to.

I'm gonna try to keep the modem under their 30 day satisfaction guarantee. Hope the 50k points goes in soon

            • @MeesusEff: I assume he meant FTTH or HFC or FTTN in terms of what tech

            • @MeesusEff: I also got the Telstra $1/month on FTTP and it worked well for me. I requested the plan to start on May 21st and it did switch a this date. The switch happened around 00:30 and my router reconnected automatically. I got around 5 minutes of down time.

I never had to plug the Telstra modem (it's still in the box) but Telstra sent me a text saying they can't see my modem connected, even though everything is working well.

              • @lorikeet: Is your order showing up on your dashboard? My service was up on the 16th, but it's still showing pending now and I just plugged the modem in today. I want them to acknowledge my order is active before I cancel it lol

                • @MeesusEff: My order is still showing in progress. It's at step 2/2 "Plug-in Modem". I'm trying to plug in the modem now to see if that will makes it active.

Edit: Now the step 2 "Plug-in Modem" is saying "Connected" but the order is still "In progress" and still not in "Your Services".

Edit 2: It's now showing in my services.

      • I got on the $1 per month for 2 months with Telstra.
Service is running but they can’t connect my service to my account without plugging the modem in.
I said flick the modem. Will be taking it back in 2 months and changing.
They are telling me my nbn is not active because I haven’t plugged in the modem they sent me but it is.
        Weird

        • Yup, I told live chat, just activate my account asap without the modem, 'I'll try'. That was 3 days ago and still pending.

I gave the modem a go at my own place and plugged my google wifi into it, and it just doesn't work. It says I have internet but nothing will load so I don't wanna plug it in at mine either as it's a pita to go up and down to plug it.

Wonder how Long it can sit at pending for, free 4g 4 life lol

          • @MeesusEff: I was connected before I plugged the modem in, it was running fine on the old router. I want the 50k points, but after I jump off this telstra ride I'm thinking of jumping back on down the track and just not plugging the modem in and see how long I can get free internet.

            • @Miss B: Goes to show how incompetent Telstra is. I actually did plug in the modem at the house on the 10th, my order wasn't even on my dashboard then but the modem kept disconnecting or resetting so I just plugged the old one back in.

              • @MeesusEff: My order isn't on my dashboard either but i'm getting the 114.96up 20.62down on the 250 plan.
After the 2 months I will leave them.
will be 7 months since leaving SuperLoop.
Can I grab a on of their discounts or any recommendations for a different provider.
                I have HFC in Brisbane

                • @zemphism: Yeh my parents order is still tracking stage waiting for modem plug in. Oddly enough, I set up my service to start on the 25th, and they sent me a text yesterday saying 'we ll start it on the 23rd'. WHY CAN'T YOU JUST START ON MY SET DATES?! Lol.

          • @MeesusEff: Fingers crossed

    • +4

I do it every 6 months. once the discount finishes i just move onto the next one (usually consists of 3 providers, only cause i have had no issues with any of them as of yet).

      • +5

        Which three?

        • Keen to know as well

        • +6

I jump between Internode, AussieBB and Superloop myself.

No reason to be loyal when changing ISPs takes 5min and they don't do anything to keep customers.

        • I do the same
          Abb superloop and mate

        • Superloop, Internode and tangerine. Have tried all 3 and have not had any issues with any. Im on HFC at the moment but was on FTTC previously. Currently with Superloop and have 1 more month of the discount so next will be Internode for 6 months.
I know i get what i pay for, but i had been on cable for 6 years prior to nbn and was paying $80 a month and honestly living on my own that was the most i was willing to pay for internet. Personally i think paying that now is too much, i get what the gov and nbn do with price increases but i still thinking paying any more than $80 for internet is just a joke.

          • @duckdodgers245: How do you find churns on HFC? I’ve had terrible experiences so far.

            • @sween64: No issues at all. Churned from Tangerine to Superloop with maybe a 5min downtime while i change my router settings. Although i go through those specific 3 have been considering on adding Spintel and dropping tangerine. Right at the start when nbn was made available i went through AussieBB to iron out any issues with the link and speeds etc. but never had any problem at all.
FTTP and HFC should be churn almost instantaneously. As far as i know they should all be automated.
Question is when you say "had terrible experiences" what do you mean? the churn fails? trying to contact the provider issues?

              • @duckdodgers245: I think part of my issue stems from requesting a future activation date. My first move from ABB to Origin didn’t go well as I tried to move the date only the day prior.

My second move from Origin to Telstra was horrendous due to Telstra’s incompetence. I requested a date about two weeks in to the future, they made the churn request to Origin only a week after I made the order, the Telstra modem hadn’t arrived.

In the future I might call my prospective new ISP and request a churn ASAP. That should happen on the same day and have minimal downtime, right?

                • @sween64: Yeah i have never requested future dates. I wait till the last couple of days before my 6 months is to end and usually do it during the week so that its not stuck over the weekend. yeah im losing a few days of what i have paid but better option than not having internet over the weekend.
I have never used Origin so i cant comment on them. But moving to telstra is something i would never do, the day i could move away from them i did it…
Best option is to just wait till you get close to the end of your month and do it then. Stick with companies that can do it quickly in my experience all the ones that i have used so far have just worked as it should be automated (including AussieBB, my first provider to iron out any issues i might get knowing that they will just persist with nbnco to fix any issues). I would say just do the sign up online, i think that will be the fastest way to do it, have never called to change providers, also i hate handing over my debit/credit card details over the phone to anyone if i can avoid it. The only time you will get an issue is if you have some complicated set up which sounds like you dont have.

                  • @duckdodgers245: After signing up, how long does it take? Is it same day? How long is your downtime?

ms_sween64 WFH most of the time. If I can minimise downtime and also orchestrate it to occur on a day she’s in the office, that’s ideal

                    • +1

@sween64: Superloop was maybe 5 mins after submitting. Internode maybe 20mins. Tangerine was maybe an hour later. AussieBB 5 mins again.
AussieBB and SL use IPoE so dont need to change anything just restart modem and router and keeps working, Internode and Tangerine use PPPoE so you need username and password which they should provide via email when you sign up.

Downtime is very minimal, i also WFH half the week so i usually churn when im home so i can get things up and running again. Usually do it during lunch time so its all the matter of signing up and waiting for the initial email and then i just onto my router change the settings and check the speeds. Even if it does happen when im working then again its only a 2min change on my router and modem reboot, so no real biggy for me.
If you are comfortable with changing modem settings then have a look at this first, https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/vdsl2_modem_routers_isp_settin… workout what you need and where to find the settings and once you internet goes down just change and away you go. Always remember to reboot your nbn modem so it grabs the new IP.

                      • @duckdodgers245: I'm sorry to continue to ask possibly obvious questions but those churns you've outlined ("Superloop was maybe 5 mins after submitting. Internode maybe 20mins. Tangerine was maybe an hour later. AussieBB 5 mins again") were they all on HFC?

                        • +1

@sween64: All good. Yes HFC and on FTTC. Was changing the internet for my girlfriend at the same time to get her on cheaper deals as well. Girlfriends house is HFC and mine was FTTC.

                          • +1

@duckdodgers245: Okay thanks. I might move to Tangerine next time I’m home and ms_sween64 is in the office. You’ve given me hope.

      • +1

I've been doing the same over the last couple of years.

For me, the (most consistent) three have been Superloop, Internode and Tangerine.

I've also tried out AussieBB, Origin & FlipTV at various instances

        • +5

I planned to do this but superloop keep sending me a new discount offer every time my current one is about to expire. Currently paying $85 for 250/20

        • Have you had multiple discounts with Tangerine? How long do you have to be away from Tangerine to be considered a new customer eligible for a discount?

          • @sween64: I've been with Tangerine a max of 6 months at a time.. no multiple discounts unfortunately.
I'm not sure how long we'd need to wait before they'd consider us new customers. I'd assume it would be a minimum of 12 months?

            • @shakir99: I’ve read elsewhere you can only be a new customer with Tangerine once. It’s determined by the service address.

    • +1

I've done that to stay on the discounts for most of the last 2 years, but now that my ABB discount just ran out, I see that SL have a clause that says if you got the 6 month discount previously, it's a 12 month cooldown as a new customer, not 6… so I'll be looking for a different one now. It's not chump change, depending on your plan can be $20 month saving which adds up.

      • They had/have a $20 off promotion for 6 months for existing customers who joined SL from their previous new customer promotion.

I was able to successfully change my plan after my initial 6 months of discount. Currently in my second month of the new promotion.

So maybe SL prefer you stay with them rather than churning out and back in.

      • if you have FTTP, and another family member living with you. Sign up with their name on a different port. Or if no FTTP, cancel and sign up with different family members name. Just have to deal with no internet for 1-3 days.

    • +13

You're worried about being rude to a corporation??

Be polite to the customer service reps but morally you owe the businesses nothing.

    • You get the best price is you switch providers. Otherwise you cop the lazy tax eventually.

ISP, home insurance, car insurance, phone plan, electricity/gas etc, always changing after 6-12 months.

    • I suggest you change and save yourself money.

I changed from ABB to More Broadband.

There was a deal via the Commonwealth Bank where if you paid using a Commonwealth Bankcard, you got $30 off for the first 12 Months.

  • +2

    any 1000 mbps nbn recommendations?

    • +3

Have been with Aussie BB in the past, their gigabit was rock solid. Always got 900+Mbps.

Changed to SuperLoop when we moved house recently, to take advantage of new customer offers. Also quite good. Not quite as fast, but still 700+Mbps in peak.

Can't go wrong with either IMO.

      • +2

Anecdotal but I had a poor experience with superloop. Paid for the 100/20 plan and started off getting around 80-85mbps, which I was willing to accept, whatever. Then I eventually started consistently getting 30-40mbps and dumped them

      • +1

Yep as long as you steer clear of the big dogs like optus and telstra and tpg

and are on fibre, you should be getting your max

Im on a 1gb FTTP plan

        Have been on

        Superloop

        Leaptel

        Mate

        AussieBB

        Telstra

        and like 2 others

        Telstra is a (profanity) joke

180 bucks,For what…If i have an issue takes 3 days to escalate it,or stick to a smaller ISP who can chase it the same day

Out of all of them aussie had the best network, but leaptel had the best customer service

        Havent seen anything below 910mbps

so yeah it makes zero sense to stick with a ISP if ur on NBN with a fibre connection and u can change in less than a minute, they dont reward you so why stay

    • +4

I had AussieBB 1000/50 until earlier this year. Rock-solid, Speedtests of 930/48mbit was the maximum I could achieve, at any hour of the day including evening peaks, and all your regular services like Steam would saturate that as needed. But at $159/mon (+$5 for static IP) it was too expensive to justify.

Jumped ship to MyRepublic for their offer of 1000/50 or $99/mon for 6 months (+$10 for "gamer" peerings/routes and static IP) and the speeds are nowhere near the same. I might be able to burst to 900s, but I can't do over 350 in peak hours. Currently getting 550/37 in a speed test.

What is also evident is their routing is shit. It's an extra ~15ms to some of my servers in Europe, and resolving to DNS of Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) is quite a lot slower than ABB was.

So MyRepublic is worse than ABB, but not $50/mon worse.

ABB if you're listening, I'd jump back in a heartbeat for increased upload capacity. A 250/250mbit plan under $150/mon would be amazing, but I know this is NBN not canibalising the business pricing, not your issue…

      • Yep well said

You can't really justify aussie prices

they are good, but they aren't 20 dolllars or more premium good

        • You've certainly tried a fair few, do you have a preference or just go with the flow for sign-on deals and prices?

          • @FatBoyNotSoSlim: Can't faul leaptel or even superloop

            Superloops not great

But unless ur expecting ur full speed at 7pm you will be fine

like you don't "NEED 245mbit at night,190 is just fine

    • Stay away from ABB, ONLY good thing about them is good customer support and thats it.
Its been 5months+ now and getting ~400Mbps on a 1Gbps plan and they cant do shit about it and making me run around I have have given up hope with this shit ABB!

New ACCC data shows Aussie BB has nearly 20,000 customers on Gigabit and that is the most by any ISP.

        nbn don't consider 400Mbps a fault.

        1. Is that 400Mbps on Wi-Fi or plugged in with Ethernet cable?
        2. Do you have HFC or FTTP?
        3. What routers have you tested?
        4. Have you plugged in a computer to the nbn NTD and run a speedtest to rule out a router problem?
        5. Have you tested with new Ethernet cables?
        • @Twix
Are u saying that getting 400Mbps speed on a 1Gbps is good!
Hmmmm……then why customers need to pay high money for superfast plan if ISP is not able to provide a decent service?
          Am in HFC area.
All troubleshooting steps were done with ABB! They only say just reset the NBN box it will be all ok……

          • @dajiska: I never said that. nbn won't come to check the HFC at your property when it's downloading at 400Mbps. You are paying for a best effort service that is shared with others in your location and you are not guaranteed to get Gigabit download speeds 24/7. Resetting the nbn NTD is not a magic fix. Can you answer questions 1, 4, 5?

What routers have you used apart from Nest Wi-Fi?
