  • this or castrol edge?

    • Both at this price, Helix Ultra. Castrol Edge usually goes on sale for $15 less though.

    • Much of muchness

@OzJunkGain - Whilst there is plenty of really top notch oil, Shell Helix Ultra is much better than anything else on the market.

        • what about this VS. carmaker spec'ed oil ?

          was it just marketing ?

i mean stuff like VW , euro spec , vw504/507 , low SAPS oil

          • @dcep: @Phunkydude - Those are slightly different.

The base oil might be the same, but they'll have additive packages to make them different. Each of those things serve a purpose and it's important to match those guidelines to the oil you buy.

If I had one of those requirements, then I'd try and find a Shell Helix product which match it. If not, then I'd go with the brand which carries that requirement.

Shell Helix ultra is one of the best, if not the best engine oil ever. They offer an engine warranty (Marketing) but there's many oil analysis done on Bob Is the Oil Guy to back up how durable the oil is.

It's the OEM oil for many high end manufacturers and the same oil many race teams use (they obviously add their own additives to it). If you can afford it, go for this over the other brands.

  • Gone are the days when you can get this for under $30.

On a different note, I've only done 5,000km in the last 6 months in my 120 Prado V6. I've been using Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 in the last couple of oil changes. About to do a winter road trip to Uluru and thinking of doing an oil change using Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30 to see if there are fuel economy gains. Car is approaching 300k km and regularly serviced by me for the last 13 years. Thoughts?

    • I am not a mechanic, but if you live in a colder area/start your car early in the morning when it's cold, I'd use 5w30 or consider an even thicker oil. My thoughts on this, is there would be more wear and tear on the engine/larger clearances which need oil to fill in these extra gaps, compared to when the car was new.

Changing oil more frequently can sometimes do more harm than good, as it takes some time for the oil to bond with the metal parts. I ran 5w30 in a direct injected engine and it was fine after 5,000 km. I'd personally change it around 7500km or even 10,000km depending on what your original oil change intervals suggest.

      • The service interval is 10k/6mth

        • @lomie - From my experience the oil will be fine for the full 12 months/10k. But if you feel more comfortable changing it earlier, it won't do any harm.

My comment above wasn't worded properly. I meant more so when people change their oil every 3,000km etc.

          • @StonedWizard: I agree - if you're using modern synthetic oil, there's no need to change it every 6 months if you're doing low mileage, it's lifespan is way longer than that 👍

    • I wouldn't move to thinner oil on a car with 300,000K - it's common to use thicker oil on high mileage engines, because it's "harder" for thicker oil to leak. It's definitely not common to invite leaks by moving to a thinner oil :-)
