Cheap Games from GAME.com.au (from $5 In-Store Pickup)

70

Heard that GAME.com.au has gone into administration this morning (via Kotaku), which also links to this useful guide at LifeHacker. Basically ordering online or pre-order from GAME.com.au is pretty risky, but they have had their instore cheap games promotion for a while and these should be pretty safe (as long as the stores have them).

Under $10:

  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 (360) — $5
  • DJ Hero 2 SA (Wii) — $5
  • Michael Phelps Push the Limit (360) — $5
  • Yoostar 2 In the Movies (PS3) — $5
  • Steel Diver (3DS) — $9

Under $20:

  • Move Fitness (PS3) — $14
  • Rift Planes of Telara (PC) — $14
  • Super Street Fighter IV (3DS) — $19
  • Start The Party 2 (PS3) — $19
  • Prof Layton & The Last Specter (DS) — $19
  • Pro Evolution 2011 — $19

Not as crazy as DSE last time.

I'm waiting for the fire sale :)

More info here on their voluntary administration:

    http://www.game.com.au/faq

Info for those with store credit:

"We are prepared to honour existing gift cards, gift vouchers and credit notes for most of the products
in our stores or online on the basis that these can only be used for 25% of the total purchase price. For
example if you have a $15 gift card, you are required to spend at least $60 in store or online, in order
to redeem the gift card, with the balance of $45 to be paid in cash."

Hmm I wonder how well this will go down.

      • +1

Not well, and that wont include those that will say they told you so!

      • +2

I'd be absolutely furious… Poor buggers.

    • +1

      Well there goes my points….

    • +4

What a kick in the balls. I'm so glad I used my credit on a Vita, what would I do with $240 now? There's not $960 worth of stuff I would want, let alone even buy.

Guess my remaining $20 goes down the drain.

    • argghhhhhh i have about $100 worth of credit on my account.

what are the chances of them getting out of administration and be being able to spend my credit without having to pay 75% of the item??
      this sucks

      • -1

It depends if the money is store credit or GAME reward points.

If its points (which you seem to be implying with the account part) then you would need to spend $1000 to use $100 worth of points.

        Bullshit, I know.

    • +2

As always gift cards rank lower than cash.

Always a point to remember when receiving gift cards - use them ASAP ;-)

      • This is making my Good Guys gift cards weight heavy on my mind.

Stupid companies are allowed to decide…FUCK YOU I'LL TAKE YOUR MONEY IF WE GO DOWN.

Those Diablo 3 pre-orders had better ship!

'At this stage we are intending on honouring diablo 3 pre-orders'

Hopefully since they should ship today, they get to us before the administrators have enough info to change business practices further and screw us over.

    • +2

Screw them over? It seems like they did a pretty good job of that themselves, I'm not saying they are entirely at faul, retail games shops have been doomed for years but the purpose of the administrators is to try and save the business or at least save the creditors from losing a bucketload of money.

    • GAME isn't actually getting delivery of D3.
      So, ummm, good luck?

      • Online =/= Store fronts.

    • +1

Unsecured creditors (aka us) are going to get screwed. I just had two diablo III CE pre-orders go through. Fucking painful.

  • Watch the JB Hifi share price now ;)

    crap games.

I started a intel topic here on my thoughts on Game market:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70046

    • Nice thread. But sadly with current gen and easily produced formats (such as DVDs and digital copies) there was always going to be a downward trend in pre-owned games.

As you said in your post, the real killer is UK/ebay sales. Noone wants a preowned game when for the same/less money you can get a brand new copy. Not to mention the developers of these games putting single-use game codes into many games, so pre-owned no longer get that content!!

It's been a long time coming.

  • The deal itself is okay, but nothing there that remotely interests me. Sad to see GAME going downhill, but as a PC gamer they just aren't competitive with places like Steam, sometimes Amazon, and places like OzGameShop.

  • +1

GAME preorders of D3 shipped already (collectors edition anyway)

Check your game account if you've bought it frmm there it should tell you if its shipped

    • 11/05/12 11:52 Article ready for despatch SEVEN HILLS BC

Which means it's still with Game?

Normally there can be a few days between "ready for despatch" and "Received by auspost" - or am I wrong?

      • This item has not shipped yet. They have created the label in eparcel. But i reckon you are ok mate.

Edit - actually i would call them. They created the label a while ago in prep of packing your order. Might be a problem.

        • Yeah, but game only has email contact :/

48 hour delay with that… by then, I suppose I'll know.

Would have been nice if they had a customer service phone number (although I know they don't in order to save money)

        • I ordered a diablo 3 CE from GAME and it got delivered today, so they definately have stock.

        • I can confirm it's halfway across the country, so I will get it.

          What a relief!

  • Sadly not a single thing I want…

  • +1

I went to Game Perth shop.

There was nothing there of good value (PS3 space).

  • +1

Can't say I'll miss em, they didn't even try to open a store acessible to people in Victoria, I mean look up their store locations there, simply abismal.

  • And now to wait for eb to Close down now, them and their stupid rip off prices.

    • +3

maybe their 'stupid rip off prices' are the reason they HAVEN'T closed down…

  • +4

I think we WILL miss all these guys VERY much, remember its only competition that drives prices down, less competition with GAME gone means EB selling games at crazy high prices.

Yes, we can all get cheap games from the internet but thats only cause the dollar is so sweet, what happens when the dollar falls again, where do we go for cheap games…..no where!!

Right now those stores that dont need to discount games will be the ones left standing and when the dollar falls on us its those same stores that will reap the monopoly sales as the competition dies away.

Its too bad GAME couldnt hang in there till the dollar falls or games distributors come to their senses and lower game prices. In the end its more the product distributors who put GAME out of business as the game distributors want to keep prices high in Australia but we just go elsewhere instead of local stores, so goodbye GAME au.

Yes, we can all get cheap games from the internet but thats only cause the dollar is so sweet, what happens when the dollar falls again, where do we go for cheap games…..no where!!

Well… Yes and no. Even if the dollar falls, the price of games from OS will still be cheaper than from here, until the retailers/importers/wholesalers here realise that they can't screw us over forever..

PS. Don't tell Mr. Harvey that, he'll blow a valve..
PPS. On second thought, tell him. :)

      • I just got back from JB and looks like they taking their own action so they dont end up same way as GAME. They now selling imported games, they got a small display (photo I took not working) that has a selection of new games which have been imported and big stickers on them saying they are imports so DLC might not work.

        Mw3 was $49

        • How is that different to Australian stock? MW3 has been that price for a while, at least with several specials.

    • -1

Cheaper prices overseas have nothing to do with our stronger dollar (not mainly). Its mostly about buying power and admin costs. Companies with a storefront will never be as competetive as online retailers. People don't need to see games in person, they watch countless videos on youtube reviewing/unboxing it.

The only money i see GAME making is when they hold midnight release for new games. I say good riddance to GAME, they never were competitive in the first place. BigW and JB Hifi are the only stores I'd buy games from.

      • I never had much love for GAME either. But I will remember the day I bought a bunch of crappy PS3 games off them (spend ~$36 for 3 games) then went to JB Hi Fi and did one of those trade 3-4-1 deals and got a copy of a hard to find Wii game for $0! Shelf price was $99 =3

        Leg work = discount

    • Maybe don't just blame the retailer but the local distributor/wholesaler are to blame as well. The retailer has to negotiate a buy price from them…

"GAME Australia reportedly texted customers today informing them that they will not be stocking Diablo III and anyone who pre-ordered the game will not receive a refund, The Verge reported."

    Ouch!!!!!!

    • +3

Reading the article…I am shocked they are allowed to do this.

  • +1

Micheal Phelps is also under the 'Buy two get one free' promo

  • For locally sourced games (not imported) EB has actually been lifting their game (no pun intended) lately, price-wise.

The new Ghost Recon is coming out, $88 for some limited to EB edition with various DLC bits and stuff.

But yeah, I predicted this to my friends about 4 months ago. Needless to say they used any credit/cancelled any pre-orders at Game etc.

As much as EB is a rip-off, they seem to be getting a bit better.

  • to all those ppl with a plethora of good guys gift cards…something to think about

    • yeah but you cant buy a fridge or stove off Zavvi!

  • So now if I want a local major games retailer I'm stuck with EB Games?… Great.

  • +4

I'd suggest using your credit card for pre-orders in situations like this. If the merchant doesn't deliver then you simply contact your credit card provider and they cancel the charge.

    • But how would you prove that? The charge came prior to notice of administration. I've been screwed before in this circumstance, and unfortunately the rules are not what you would expect.

I think you risk it being reported against your credit rating in this case. But I wonder if anyone here is informed enough to say with certainty what would happen..

      • The charge back is because the merchant didn't deliver the goods that were promised. I haven't needed to do it since Ansett collapsed.

  • Well Skylanders at $74 is STILL A RIPOFF even at closing down prices.
