Not really useful for a food thermometer, I believe this is for surface temperatures

    • +1

Yes, it is for reading surface temperatures so it will work fine for food as long as you are not looking for an internal temp. Infrared thermometers are not made to read internal temps. Accuracy can be a bit hit and miss as well but good if you want to get a rough temp reading. Get one of these if you want to read accurate internal temps: https://www.amazon.com.au/Inkbird-Waterproof-Thermometer-Rec…

      • I have one of those for internal temps, but it's a fair bit slower than my Thermopop thermometer.

        • That sounds odd … mine gives an instant reading, no delay at all. Just stick it in and it gives the temp right away.

          • @pierrejb: Must have gotten a red one.

Mine takes a couple of seconds for the temperature to be accurately displayed.

            • @TEER3X: Yes, the red ones from Bunnings are different and not instant read.

Bought one of these five years ago off eBay for seven or eight bucks. Not a deal.

Not seeing the value even with discount compared to the multitude of others on fleabay

I recommend UNI-T Digital Thermometer UT306S AU$25.50 Includes shipping and GST. This is a professional quality laser thermometer.
I have both of these thermometers and just like OzBer @adrianhughes1998 I bought this orange one off eBay years ago for under $10.
The Uni-T is miles ahead in features quality and accuracy, and it's cheaper!!

    • According to the description, you can adjust for emissivity which is nice. Maybe an upgrade is in order for me too, thanks.

    • So, $1.50 cheaper but wait for it to ship from China. What is better about it? They both claim +/-2degC and +/-2% accuracy. Both have Emissivity that can be set. Both are 12:1.

The one you linked states it goes to 500degC. The Inkbird one claims 550degC.

So why is your linked one better?

      • Logical thinking, that is what I was going to say..
+ no warranty on product from China seller after arriving in a month time.

      • Not sure if I'm reading it correctly, or they're facts or BS, but the Inkbird says ≥100℃, ±2% / ≤100℃, ±2℃, whereas the UNI-T just says ±2°C or ±2%, so not sure if this is any different

  • Be good to measure temp of deep fryer oil?

  • Thanks. That's what I thought, though I was hoping that this might do the job too. Apparently not.

    • I think it can be used in many situations, eg. on BBQ hotplate to make sure hot plate / grill is hot enough. Also if you cook Pizza at home on stone or pizza oven, this is a must to have. I ordered one (the next model up with 2 laser beams) and waiting for delivery, so will report if can be used to check oil temp for deep fryer.

    • I received my dual laser Inkbird model and tested for deep frying oil and it worked ok, fryer was set to 170 deg and it measured similar temp.
