Parkrun Barcode App for Samsung Galaxy Watch / Active (Tizen) $0.99 (Was $2.49) @ Samsung Galaxy Appstore

922

Hey OzBargainers
I'm discounting my Parkrun Barcode app for Samsung Watches for a week starting Friday to 0.99c for all Aussies,

BUT for OzBargainers I've got 100 FREE promo codes , please DM me for your unique code

I developed this app to display your Parkrun Barcode on Samsung galaxy watches because I was jealous of the Garmin and apple watch users
It works on Tizen based weatches, e.g. Samasung Galaxy watch 3, samsung galaxy watch active etc..
You can display your barcode as a widget or just open the app. The app will display your barcode on max brightness for scanning and return to your previously set brightness when not displayed.

This means you never forget your barcode and only have to carry your watch with you!

Parkrun ( https://www.parkrun.com.au/ ) is a free 5km timed run that operates on Saturday mornings all around the world. check the website to see if there is a local one near you. You can register for your free barcode from parkrun. Scan your barcode at the end of parkrun to track how your runs and compare your pb's.

Coupons only work on the Samsung store on Android (I'm still waiting for coupons to generate, will post here when they are up!)

Of course you can always pay full price and shout me a coffee!

Appreciate any feedback, please let me know how you go with it!
cheers!

First lot of coupons have been sent, I'll send a few more once I have access to the spreadsheet again and can sort it which ones have been used. Sorry it is a bit more complicated than I was expecting!

cool effort making an app for this.

    Don't have a samsung watch.
Was it hard to make? (Do you have an app design bacgkround?)

    • +6

yeah i used to be a programmer, had to learn the tizen environment, but didnt do it native in the end (they supported html/javascript so i was able to use that plus the native tizen storage and watch controls)
They've moved away from tizen now though so was a bit useless!

      • +1

        What do you do now?

        • +1

I'm a church pastor now, coded this on my day off for fun :)

          • @BenK-Oz: Ah ok, cool.

Did you have a professional career in software development?

            • @StalkingIbis: sorry missed your reply, yep I worked in software development for 10 years

  • -1

sorry never forget the barcode for what. Is it where my bike is located or what? Not following sorry

    • +1

I'm guessing it's a barcode ID that you scan on to do the run, probably to record global ranking or something?

      • -6

I'm guess he's going for the extra idiot points for asking it in the most ignorant and obnoxious way.

        • +3

          Thats my job

    • +5

When you register with Parkrun, you get a barcode you scan at the finish of each race to record time & attendance.

    • Obviously you're not a golfer

  • Obviously not a ParkRunner

    • +6

      parkrunner

  • What a great idea! Sorry I have a Garmin but would love to have a watch with my parkrun barcode on it. Very happy with my Garmin but your app would be so handy to save having to remember to bring our barcodes each week.

    • +13

Huh? If you have a Garmin, you can just download the barcode app and just store your parkrun barcode on your watch. This is the reason he made this app for samsung.

I developed this app to display your on Samsung galaxy watches because I was jealous of the Garmin and apple watch users

      • +3

I do parkrun most weeks and had no idea there was a garmin app for barcode! I am certain noone from our run has the app because they all pull out their paper barcodes or have the wrist band barcodes. The app will make it much handier knowing there is one available.

        • +3

There's lots of free barcode apps in the Garmin store to get the parkrun barcode on your watch eg. https://www.runnersradar.com/gear/tech/how-to-get-parkrun-ba…

          • +3

@daydream: Cheers, was completely unaware of this! I really only use my garmin for tracking time and distance and haven't ventured into the world of its 'smart' capabilities such as adding apps. I will give it a go.

            • +1

@RoosterBooster: Glad you have found it. This combined with the garmin pay has saved me many times. Almost no need to bring a phone anywhere.

I use barcode wallet and it works well. You do have to read instructions to use it.

              • @mit: Cheers! I downloaded the 'parkrun barcode' one yesterday by following youtube instructions. Should be a game changer - no need to remember my plastic barcode. Will try it tomorrow!

  • +4

Damn, I am still using a piece of paper. I feel old.

    • +2

That seems the way to do it…

    • +10

I put a photo of it on my watch

      • +2

.. this seems so obvious now lmao

        • Ditto

    • Some Parkruns only accept printed barcodes

Edit Just read this against the new policy

      • why would it matter? as long as the code works…..

I've used my garmin venu 2 with the barcode on it and it's been fine. Scanners hadn't come across it before but it worked fine so he didn't care.

        • +2

I think it was because it's less reliable scanning from a screen, so there's too much faffing about, which wastes time.

          • @prhino: Sure I can appreciate that….but had not one issue with mine so far. Granted there's only 30 or so runners on average at my local one…..can imagine the larger ones in Melbourne I've done with 100s of runners it may get annoying, maybe it's an extra 2-3 seconds to get the scanner in the right spot. But dats it.

Hopefully those with the apps though preload it so it's ready to scan……and don't sit there at the scanner loading it up holding up everyone behind them.

            • @PleasureMachine: Yeah, I agree with you. Even at the bigger Melbourne ones, it's not that bad.

        • It was explained to me that if you have a medical issue during the run, it's easier for them to get the bit of paper off your decaying corpse as it has your emergency contacts details on it.

With a phone / watch / etc they'd need to unlock & find it etc ..

    • +1

      I have it printed on a t-shirt

  • +1

What app do Garmin users use?

  • +3

I bought the little round barcode tag that clips onto your car key ring.
    Battery never goes flat.

  • +8

If you have WearOS/watchOS you can use Stocard for free instead and then add any other barcodes like FlyBuys etc.

    • I was wondering whether anyone else would recommend Stocard. I use it for all my barcode-based cards - Woolies Rewards, Jaycar, Anaconda, library cards, etc.

    • for Apple watches theres a little tool to add directly to apple wallet - https://dfyb.run/

  • +3

credit to OP, I had no idea about Parkrun.
I checked the website and I'm still confused.
What do you use the barcode for? You scan when you start and finish your race?

    • +3

Scan when you finish. Start time is the same for everyone.

      • So there are a bunch of people with scanners at the finish line?
What's the benefit compared to say Strava?
Is it for people who don't have a smart watch?

        • +7

There are milestones for parkrun that are celebrated in the community: first 50, 100, 200 runs, first 25 volunteer efforts, first 10 runs if you’re a junior. Scanning the barcode attributes the time to your profile, which tracks all previous efforts, PBs on each course, and a %WADA grading of fitness based on the time and your age & gender.

          • @yojabbajabba: Thank you both for taking the time answering questions.
            Makes sense and seems interesting.

        • +5

I'll add a few more bits to @yojabbajabba who's on the money - it's basically a free race which at least psychologically makes me run faster. All of my 5km PBs have been either at a parkrun (or a paid 5km race) as opposed to training solo where it's harder to run those super hard efforts.

Most 5km races are say $40 or $50 entry fee so there's a limit to how many of them you do each year. With parkrun being free, I do maybe 10 per year usually a hard or all-out effort to see how my fitness is tracking in the lead up to a goal race.

They also sometimes have pacers for special events or at the bigger runs, so if you have a goal time in mind you can run with someone who'll evenly pace the 5k for you to achieve your goal time.

          • +2

@ham0718: Agree….even though it's technically not organised as a race, I like the additional effort to run it like race to push me that extra bit vs when training solo.

After 3years off, it's nice to get back into it.

Here is an example of the results from last week in the Rooty Hill Park Run
          https://www.parkrun.com.au/rootyhill/results/latestresults/
You can see what position you came, how many runs people have done, what milestone they have reached (example 25, 50, 100, 250, 500), their age group (I've seen 80+ years old do it).It will also tell you if they got a new Personal Best for that particular parkrun, or if they are a first timer.
You can also click on any runner and see their stats. Which parkruns they have done, how fast etc. There are over 400 Parkrun locations around Australia, and they are all 5k, however very different terrains.
Map of all the parkruns in Australia
          https://www.parkrun.com.au/events/events/#geo=3.75/-28.9/134…

Some people try to do as many different parkrun events as possible. For example if you complete all Sydney Parkruns which I believe there are 31 of them, you unofficially join Raefarer club, which some people track. There are also Apps for example '5k' which you can complete other goals, like do parkruns starting with every letter of the alphabet (except x), or parkruns that have a coordinate in the name eg East, West etc, or complete a parkrun with a unique position number etc.
Its fun, great way to exercise, and meet new people. Some people take it to the extereme and travel around Australia completing these parkruns.

        • +2

The benefit is that you're running against other people, so you push yourself more

          • @prhino: Yep, definitely convinced partner & I should sign up now. Thanks all for the inputs ♥️

    • +1

Barcode identifies the participant (number). Just do it once and can use it at parkruns worldwide. parkrun encourage community participation with free 5km walks/runs every week.

You can of course do your own walk/run and time it but there are millions of people who enjoy running with others at events (some pay plenty for the events), parkrun is a free, regular one in the local community.

      • +1

Do they ever run special longer event?
Used to do the city to sea, but since they cancelled it in 2018…

        • +1

          No. It's always 5km. Everywhere.

        • Check out Longest parkrun. more like a parkrun game.
          https://www.facebook.com/longestrunau/

There used to be new year's day double (two parkruns on new years day) but not anymore.

  • -8

Umm…sorry to be a party pooper, but many parkruns will refuse to scan barcodes on watches and phones. They want physical barcodes only.

I've had the Garmin barcode app and had to revert to my trusty laminated barcode instead.

    • +6

      your info is slightly outdated.
From November 2021 they officially scan from anything, not just "printed"
      https://blog.parkrun.com/au/2021/11/22/scanning-on-mobile-de…

    • +3

parkrun is evolving. The garmin app has now got a second screen to show a 2D barcode which scans much easier than the old school format.

But the only reason it was blocked was the old keyring scanners couldn't handle anything other than paper.

      • Think you mean a QR code. The original barcode is still 2D.

    • +9

Hi, I'm a run director for my local Parkrun. That has been the directive in the past, but Parkrun have recently changed the policy and now allow phones to be used to display barcodes for scanning. It's still not 100% reliable depending on both the runners phone display and the scanners camera, but it's no longer disallowed by parkrun policy.

      • Awesome. Obviously was not aware of the policy change and the change has not been promoted by my local parkrun.

Apologies @berserkk for the negative vote.

        • +4

You can remove a negative vote

          • @daydream: You know I tried and tried and tried to remove the neg. I don't know what wasn't working.

  • +1

    https://www.parkrun.com.au/

For the details… of what parkrun is all about.

Basically free fun 5K every Saturday all around the globe, run by volunteers. You register, get a free barcode. When you finish your run you get handed a position barcode. You walk to the check in hand in your personal code (or show your device) and give back their barcode.

Then keep track of your times for free online.

Parkrun recently agreed to scan electronic devices (they used to refuse) but their policy changed to keep up with the times.

  • I'd be happy to get the code in case I can't find my band!

  • Hey curious how does payment work on App Store’s. how much commission does Samsung take compared to apple/Google 30%

    • yep 30%

  • As tizen developer do you get inside information on when samsung will kill tizen?

    • nope I just coded this in my spare time and registered to the store on their website.
But galaxy watch 4 is not tizen it is wearOS , I dont think they will go back to tizen, so it is pretty much dead for watches. Not sure about their tv's and things, but again prob move to googles version of it.

      • Yes w4 is not tizen so i am just a bit worry about the older tizen watches, good idea to buy them now or not…

  • Hey @berserkk I'm overseas and can't send you a message but I'd love a code if possible. There is a parking super close and I love my older swing galaxy3 classic.
Cheers legend and thanks for sharing with the community

  • @berserkk
thanks for the deal and sharing this to the parkrun community.

  • -1

It's not a bad app. But a free alternative already exist with the option to display any barcode of your choosing (mostly used to store loyalty cards like woolies rewards etc). It's called Stocard and it works wonders on my Galaxy 4.

    • +4

For wearOS watches. Can't believe you negged.. us people with Active Watch 2 are still on Tizen.
      Revoke your negative vote.

    • +1

I store it as an image in the gallery 😅

  • -5

If it's just a barcode most apps that have options to save loyalty of gift cards can do this. Or just have it as a saved picture

    • +1

on your phone? This is for your watch.

      • Save image on watch

        • ah ok. I cant do that on mine.

  • -1

    lol.

its free on my far superior garmin fenix.

  • Thanks for the code. Where do I enter it?

    • checkout in the galaxy app store

  • Can't seem to work out how to install this on my Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. If I click on the install link on the webpage, it opens the Wearable app and I can't find the app in there. Maybe I don't have (and can't get) the required Samsung Galaxy AppStore

    • galaxy app store should be on your phone? i guess if you dont have a samsung though it wont be there…
