Hiver - Where Can You Get Cashback?

Note: It's all over. Cashback will not apply to transactions that settle from 5pm EST Wednesday, 7 September 2022 onwards.

I don't know if this will take off, but I just thought we could pool our efforts to find out what merchants come under the cashback categories for Hiver. I'll try to add them to the post when people confirm.

Feel free to comment below with either confirmed or questions. It would be great if you update if no one answers and you find out.

See deal here if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Finding Merchant code: Once the transaction has settled, click on the transaction and the category will be listed.

You can download your transaction history to help work out if you got all of your expected cashback. Brisdaz has requested Hiver add the Merchant Code to the file to make this easier, if you would like this added you may wish to request this also.

Merchants that work

Hiver have advised BPAY doesn't work for cashback.

Updated T&Cs advise cashback now only applies to Visa purchases (i.e. not eftpos/savings) via mobile payments (e.g. Apple/Google pay), online payments or PayWave. Some merchants, including some Coles stores, route tap and pay through eftpos, but paying through Google/Apple Pay goes through Visa (as long as you don't set it up as eftpos when you add the card to your digital wallet).

Appears to work even when paying through PayPal (does not work for Payin4) with the Hiver card.

  • Payment for Telstra Home Internet NBN has a merchant category of '4812 - Telecommunication Equipment and Telephone Sales'.

  • How long does it take to get the cashback? Used it at a few supermarkets and payments are fully cleared, but no cashback yet?

    • +2

Cash back will be deposited into the member’s Everyday account in the first five days of a new month.

    • I get mine on the 5th business day start each month

  • +1

Fish pier at ringwood Vic. May be the same at other stores. Freezer and locker meat privisioners.

    • Fish Pier at Westfield Doncaster Vic worked for me too

  • Andrews Meats @ Indooroopilly, QLD (including their Grill eating area) - Freezer and Locker Meat Provisioners

  • Hellofresh does not work - 7311 - Advertising Services
Expected it to come up as groceries.

  • ISP "Mate." works. NBN, VoIP and mobile service.
    4814 - Telecommunication Services

  • TPG payment seems to be considered "Computer Network Services", so probs not?

  • There needs to be a way for Hiver to manually override / reclassify merchants where there is obvious misclassification.

  • Despite what others have said, I am not convinced that the cash back will be applied to eftpos and direct debit payments. I am making all my payments via Visa.

    • +1

I'm hoping to do an eftpos transaction before the end of the month so I can find out, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

    • I use ApplePay and have the transaction go through as eftpos SAV rather than Visa (so avoid credit card fees if applied) and have always received the cashback

  • Energy Australia = Utilities

  • Telstra direct debit via Visa= Telecommunications Service

  • Anyone know if BigW will get cashback? Plan to make some large purchases at BigW soon.

    • +1

Should be right if you purchase a big W gift card on the Woolworths Gift Card site, but it comes up as 'Variety Stores' if you pay with the card in store.

Edit: You could equally buy BigW gift cards at Woolworths, if you don't get a discount from anywhere on the Woolworths Gift Card site.

  • Tried using the Woolworths app, under the new ‘Everyday Pay’ as I received a bonus points offer. Transaction came up as Woolworths, however is listed as ‘Ecommerce or Mobile Transaction’.

    • +3

Better off buying discounted Woolworths eGift Cards and adding the to Everyday Pay. Still good to know though, thanks.

    • That's an odd one, thanks for informing us. Definitely an advantage to load GCs into the app instead.

    • Good to know. Wonder if HSBC cashback also affected by Everyday Pay, will try it soon.

Also got an Everyday Pay / Visa offer

      • Wonder if HSBC cashback also affected by Everyday Pay, will try it soon.

I have not tried it, but I don't think this will work.

HSBC's 2% cashback applies for tap and pay purchases made via the Visa network (not EFTPOS) under $100 (no part payments either).

I believe adding your HSBC card to Everyday Pay will not count as a tap and pay purchase.

Or, someone will correct me and I'll have egg on my face.

        • HSBC must be:
          • Tap and pay (and no least-cost routing by the merchant)
          • <$100
          • No government services

      • I tend to agree with Negative Globalism. I am hesitant to try it with Everyday Pay after caution from someone who believed money was stolen from their card linked to Every Pay. However, I have used the HSBC card with the other Woolworths initiative - Scan and Go. And it was not eligible for the 2% cashback. If you are still going to try it, do let us know.

  • Doesn't work for Jacana energy in the NT - Government Services (Not Elsewhere Classified)

  • Circles Life - Telecommunication Services

    • Another confirmation for Telecommunications Services.

  • I just bought something from IGA to test - How do you guys check what the MCC code of a place?

    • +1

If you click on the transaction in internet banking, it shows you more details.
The MCC code is under merchant category on the bottom right of the details.

    • IGA: grocery store, supermarket

  • What about Opal contactless payment method trips?

    • +2

I don't think anyone has tested yet (or they haven't reported back). Sounds like something that should work, but it's not confirmed.

  • Aussie Broadband - out - falls under Computer Network Services

  • -4

Can you please bundle the list by state? It will make it easier to read. Maybe put national at the top.

I'm still using my card for the first month so have yet to report anything..

    • +2

I've moved the ones only in a single state to the bottom and added the state at the start. I've also removed the MCC from the ones that don't work, as I don't think it adds much and makes it much harder to read. If people feel particularly strongly I can add the MCCs back, I saved the list.

      • Personally I don’t think state is needed. You already doing a great job by making this list. We are helping you to get more business tested . If someone cannot be bother to read carefully or do a keyword search, that is not your fault.

I prefer to see the MCCs that does not work , that might come in handy in future if other deals are relying on MCC

It is rare chance that we can identify MCC of any business this way

      • -1

Thanks! So much easier to read and follow, great stuff =)

Side (general) note - dunno why my comment was negged, was just a suggestion/feedback. Didn't expect to offend anyone by putting an opinion out there. Some things aren't in every state and just makes it easy to read. Maybe I'm old. Plus it differentiates those stores we might have never heard of within our own state, as opposed to being a state specific store elsewhere.

  • Freedom Internet - Telecommunications Services

  • My Telstra NBN bill - paid via 'Click To Pay' method - came up as "Telecommunication Services".

Thanks OP, for collating this useful list.

  • WaterCorp (WA) came through as Utilities (direct debit) 👍🏻

    • Cheers mate

    • May I know how did you set it up as direct debit. The website rejected the BSB 812812.

      • +1

I did it through credit card payments.

WaterCorp is fee free for credit/debit cards so just set it up that way instead of direct debit from your account.

Sorry I should have clarified that in my original post.

        • That means its VISA debit payment that has the cashback, not direct debit.

          Cheers.

          • +1

@fatice: Well it is still direct debit.

Just sourced from a credit/debit card rather than a bank account.

  • Food Works - Grocery Stores, Supermarkets

  • Momentum (gas provider, VIC) comes up as gov services paying directly on their website :(

  • Perkbox doesn't work - went through as Buying /Shopping Services.
Parramatta Council didn't work - government services (not elsewhere classified)
Tangerine Internet works - Telecommunications services
    Globird Energy works - Utilities

    • I tried direct debit on Globird Energy but didn't work, is it still working for you?

    • How did you get Tangerine Internet eligible? I did mine via direct debit and it just said Tangerine Telecom.

      • Did you set up direct debit with your card or BSB + account number?

        • Yeah I did but the transaction didn’t say telecommunications services

          • +2

@ScobyInvader: That was an either or question.

Did you set up direct debit using your Hiver card or did you set it up using your BSB and account number? Which one?

  • Central highland waters, Ballarat region - Utilities

    Paid on their website.

  • +1

On two different 7 Eleven petrol stations I've seen the MCC "Groceries: Convenience Store" as shown on ANZ app. Haven't tested it with Hiver yet.
Wonder if this will also work for petrol stations with Coles/Woolworths attached stores.

  • Hi Melissa’s Supermarket in Huntingdale WA (filipino store) and spudshed (WA) are both class as Grocery stores, supermarkets

    Cheers

  • +1

Response correlation does not match Request.

Has anyone else had this error on their app? I've lost all functionality and it was fine just earlier this morning.

    • +1

Yep I had the same thing earlier today. Gave up on the app but the desktop website appears to be working currently.

      • +1

I've jumped on live chat, apparently the issues are intermittent and known.

        • Is live chat accessible on the desktop website? I wanted to chat with them about something else but can't stare at my phone while I'm at work.

  • Asian grocer outside JB Hifi at The Glen. Comes up at grocery store/ supermarket.

Would license renewal for Vicroads be eligible for 5% cashback?

    • Would license renewal for Vicroads be eligible for 5% cashback?

No, it wouldn't fit any of the eligible categories.

      • Correct. It will come up as Government Services. So, if you are tapping at the counter with your HSBC card, you will also not receive the 2% cashback.

  • Coles mobile recharge is not possible

  • Anyone know when do we see the cashback?

    • In the first 5 days of the following month

      • I have a feeling it will be a lump sum payment rather than being itemised like HSBC.

        • +1

Yep, one lump sum deposited before 12pm today.

  • +2

I added up my total and it was correct including the gift card from the Woolworths gift card site (no reason it shouldn't given it comes up as Grocery Store) and the eftpos purchase (at Aldi) was also successful. My electricity bill was paid on the 30th and didn't settle until the 1st and as I expected it's not included this month. Very different amounts, so quite certain of what was and wasn't included.

    • +1

Is that for May spend? No cashback for me yet.

      • +2

Yeah, landed at 8:10, but they might come through throughout the day.

      • Yes same bo cashback for me yet

    • Mine just came in, everything that had a matching MCC received cashback as my calculations match the figure I received.

  • +2

Received cashback. They gave cashback for Sydney water bill payment via PayPal (no cc fee).

  • +1

Telstra Plus rewards store is showing up with merchant code as 4900 - Utilities. That means there should be a 5% cashback, right?

I recently got the Pixel buds A series for $72 and 2500 points, the transaction has confirmed and it has that merchant code.

  • Anyone tried with council fees? What merchant code do they fall under?

    • +1

You can try and tell us. I would think it would be under "Government"

      • I was hoping someone else tried lol.

Fine, I will be a guinea pig, I will try it out.

        • +2

I think it's going to depend on which council you are under anyway so without that info no one would have been able to confirm for you regardless. Just make a $1 payment as a test amount to see what the transaction lists under.

  • Amaysim mobile worked. Pay by the visa card online - Utilities.

    • +1

Just to correct Amaysim mobile is under telecommunications Services.

  • Mine came through this morning at ~8:30. Cashback amount is correct per my calculations.

  • doesnt work for LCC council fees and first choice liquor. if it works at any other liquor stores please let us know?

    • +1

      Liquor is not groceries.

Buy the relevant gift card from Woolworths or Coles and go for it.

    • If you get discounted gift cards on the Woolworths Gift card site, from somewhere like Student Edge/Entertainment Book etc., you can get ~5% off Dan Murphy or BWS gift cards and get the 5% cashback.

  • +1

Miscellaneous Food Stores - Convenience Stores and Specialty
    Pennisi Cuisine in Woolloongabba, QLD
Blunder Rd Country Markets Fruit Shop in Oxley QLD

    Freezer and Locker Meat Provisioners
P&L Fresh Meats in Oxley QLD

  • A lot of my transactions weren't credited, now to figure out what the random amount came from…

I mainly used myki top up (via a machine, this was not credited) and a few local bakeries.

    • myki top up (via a machine, this was not credited)

That's strange. Does it not show as "Commuter transport and ferries"? Had it settled by the end of the month? Someone else reported theirs did show as that.

      • Definitely worked for me at a machine with a contactless transaction. Maybe if you insert card or select non-credit account, it is different?

  • I can verify Hiver gave me 5% cash back on my Lumo electricity bill. Online debit card payment.

  • +2

I can confirm Aldi cashback worked with the EFTPOS saving payment option (no surcharge for saving option) another saving of 0.5%.

    • this should be updated in the OP.

  • Does anyone know if Urban Utilities (Water) in Brisbane qualifies under utilities and if so does payment by Bpay qualify?
Great work putting this together Op
