  • Maybe these phones are discounted because they are old? It's what happens to old phones, they become cheaper.

    • +3

If you need a cheap backup phone or phone for older family member, and many people do, then these older midrangers are a much better option than buying recently released entry level junk like the Optus X Start 2 for the same price if not more.

      • -7

2GB RAM, a Helio processor running Android 9 with a 720p screen and Wifi 4. That's $49 and no more security patches are ever coming.

        The Optus X Start 2 was $9 and includes a $30 SIM.

It's one thing picking out a certain phone to highlight what you might think is good compared to just copy pasting the cheapest phone titles without even looking at specs. What a low effort post.

        • +2

Well for $9 you can't complain, but vast majority of Woolies are sold out of them. Its arguably unobtainable.
Cheapest you can get the X Start 2 outside of that is $49, the K41s is a much better deal for the same money.

          • -5

@UosdwisRDewoh: Your point is hilariously flawed on multiple levels.

Shows how little effort you've put into this post because you haven't even checked stock. The K41s is only in a few stores around the country because it's been sitting in storage for years. It's more unobtainable than the Optus X Start 2. Furthermore, it includes a $30 SIM vs nothing. It includes monthly security patches vs nothing. In fact, LG Mobile doesn't even exist any more.

Won't bother diving into the specs because let's be honest no one would want to use either of them. Luckily there's not only two phones in the world and new deals pop up all the time.

            • +4

@decc0: Yes a $30 SIM which can be had for $10 from Officeworks. Not a big game changer imo.

Unlike with Woolies with the X Start 2 and realme c21, the JB phones are more obtainable because you can just get them delivered instead of having to go on a long road trip like I had to to get a c21.

                  @decc0:

P.S. I'm so flattered by your neg I returned the favour :)

I wasn't the one who negged you, but no worries.

                  • -6

                    @UosdwisRDewoh: How about now :)

I just struggle to believe that someone else would rather have an phone leaving them exposed to hacks rather than a usable phone from a company who's mobile division actually exists?

                    • @decc0: I did neg after making that comment, but revoked it to be nice. Feel free to do the same.

                      • -6

@UosdwisRDewoh: If you revoked, it would have an X with your name. Regardless, seems like someone other than us is on a neg fest tonight so we'll just let them, maybe they need this to fall asleep tonight XD

@decc0: "DisabledUser"… imagine being so embarrassed by negs that you delete your account

                • @decc0: @decc0 "P.S. I'm so flattered by your neg I returned the favour :)"
That's so catty and immature, I like it!!

    • +1

I agree not great deals at all. They need bigger discounts to be even slightly tempting

  • These phones are too old and no longer receive security updates so you are exposing yourself to bugs and hackers

    • +2

Supporting older phones is a great use for custom ROMs, and there are plenty to select for Nokia 7.1.

      • I was thinking along the same lines because some of the phones had some quite decent hardware but I couldn't find anything with a current official LineageOS download or easy boot loader unlocking and that was true of Nokia's I looked at previously though I don't know whether I looked at that Nokia 7.1 specifically. In the end I decided the moto G8 might be my best bet despite not having an official LineageOS download but after all my farting around that had gone out of stock from anywhere around me.

Thanks Op, they are fine if you need a spare phone or for an older family member. Or people on a budget.

  • +2

In case there is someone like my nephew who talked his grandmother into buying an iPhone, phones with buttons are a better choice for the older, non-tech senior. Touchphones will only frustrate.

    • the iPhone SE is good for this reason, got one for my grandfather. More on the expensive side, yes, but sometimes see people selling them for $100-150 in great cond on Marketplace for whatever reason.

  • Please don't buy for older family members… Why give them rubbish when you wouldn't use this.

    • +9

Cos they don't need all the latest bells and whistles?

      • +5

Realistically, how many do - regardless of age?

  • +1

I got the Alcatel 3 in 2020 for my parents. Its an OK phone. They don't use it often and for some odd reason it tends to slow down and requires reboot to bring it back to normal operating speed sfter not being used for a while.

Older phones are usually stuck on old Android versions and quickly stop getting security updates due to there age.

I'm also looking at replacing an old IPhone 6 (64mb). I'm not a heavy mobile user who needs all the bells and whistles of the latest mobile but do want decent memory. Any good phones from this deal worth getting?

  • The Nokia for $99 is a good buy

  • I just ordered Nokia 7.2 for a backup. Delivered for $135. I'm happy with that.

    • May i know if this stocky avaiable in Sydney

  • None of these phones are near me or able to be delivered to my location.
    :(

    • Check in cart if able to be delivered, not on the product page.

  • what are the risks if you use it only to make/get calls? not for the net

    • +2

      Almost non-existent.

    • +1

Overpaying. Overweight. Shorter battery life. If its just for calls a feature phone might be a better idea.

  • My mother needs a new phone, she only uses the old button type phones which go on clearance sometimes for under $10 but none of them are loud for her to hear clearly

    • hearing test and aid may help. free for pensioners - basic aid. I use the headphones and they are clearer. the hearing aid is good too.

  • I don't see LG K41S 32GB or LG K40S 32GB - $49 on JB HiFi website.
OP, where did you find it?

    • Out of stock (OOS) now sadly

      • Thanks mate. Pity I missed it.
Do you know which of the remaing phones would be better for a 7 y.o. boy (under $99)?
He will be using it lightly - phone calls, taking photos for fun, occasinally watching Kids YouTube and may be some simple games.
Would Alcatel 1Se 32GB do the job?
And I guess I can use $10 voucher towards payment.

        • +1

The Alcatel 1Se definitely seems good enough for a 7 yo boy using lightly, for $39 its a great deal. Original rrp was $200.
The Oppo is better phone but its not worth double the money. Avoid Vivo, has less RAM.

          • +1

@UosdwisRDewoh: Thank you very much for your reply. Will go for Alcatel 1Se.
EDIT: Added to the Shopping cart, entered the addres and it shows: "An item in your cart is no longer available. Please remove it to continue."
Looks like it's available in Dubbo only and for some reason not available for delivery :((.

            • +1

@bob19: Damn, looks like a lot of the phones have silently gone out of stock for delivery. Including the Oppo, Vivo and Alcatel.
At time of writing this you can still get Nokia 4.2 delivered, that's a nice phone for $89. $300 rrp.

              • @UosdwisRDewoh: Nokia 4.2 (3GB RAM + 32GB) vs OPPO AX5s 4GB RAM+64GB???

                • @bob19: Oppo. Wasn't letting me deliver to my address though but if you can get it go for it.

                  • +1

@UosdwisRDewoh: You are right. Oppo is unavailable!
Oh, well. I guess will get Nokia 4.2. It will be $95 delivered with coupon and another $4.75 off if pay with egift card. So not so bad overall.

                    • +1

                      @bob19: Enjoy!
If order gets cancelled just remembered Woolies has Moto E7 (4gb/64gb) for $99, which is also a great deal.

                      • +1

@UosdwisRDewoh: I hope it doesn't get cancelled as I used the discount coupon (they won't credit it) and paid with a gift card (who knows when I will use it again).
As for Moto E7 at Woolies, it's locked to Vodafone.

                        • +1

@bob19: Good number of supposedly 'locked' phones tend to actually come unlocked. If not unlock code can be had for $15 off eBay.

                      • @UosdwisRDewoh:

If order gets cancelled just remembered Woolies has Moto E7(woolworths.com.au) (4gb/64gb) for $99

How did you magic up that URL? It reveals the price for OOS products. Can you magic up a URL that reveals the price of the (Blue) https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/152322/opt… sold directly by Woolworths - not via an Everyday Market Partner. Fairly similar spec wise to the Vodafone Moto E7 but with NFC and without USB C. Was recently reported by a poster to be found as low as $19 after previous reductions to $49 then $29.

                        • +1

@Stingo: I just got the URL by searching Moto E7 on google and clicking on the shopping link that comes up, and that shows price unlike normal url. Unfortunately swapping over the product code for Realme doesn't work.

I found out the Realme was $19 because you can see price of mostly OOS products in Woolworths app by finding and selecting a store that still has stock (eg Renmark SA), which doesn't work on website. Its still $19.

  • Any vivo's in SA anecdotally?
