Realistic Discount on Mazda 3?

I want to buy a new Mazda 3 hatch - when negotiating with dealers what % off should I be targeting in this market? is 10% too high/low?

I've never bought a car before so don't know what to expect. I'll be buying it outright too if that changes things. Are there any good negotiation tactics?

I know there is a car shortage but since you just get put in a 6 month long queue dealers should be willing to discount right? I can understand not discounting for stock on hand but when you get put on the waitlist surely they have every incentive to lower the price?

    Current discount level is 0%.

Dealers have no incentive at all to discount as they can just sell their allocation to the next person in the queue at full price.

      • +9

They may not have infinite stock.

      • +4

People will just leave if the dealer quotes 5 year lead times… so no, the queue is not infinite. The maximum length of the queue is up to whatever people will tolerate, which is unlikely to be much more than a year.

So with finite spots available and demand outstripping supply, why would you sell for anything less than full price? Heck, there are ex-demo cars selling for above-RRP at the moment…

      • +3

You should still try and negotiate - just not expect to get much.

Also, there was a post of another member here (can't remember if it was Mazda or some other brand) that the dealer kept pushing back their number in the queue because they had sold it for a discount. So, while others were getting their cars in 6 months; theirs kept getting pushed back with no delivery date.

      • This is true to an extent. When looking for a vehicle I was told no discount on floor stock but they gave me a very slight discount if I put in an order and wait for it to be built.

  • +8

You'll be lucky to get a free rubber mat at RRP.

  • +4

I got $500 off plus Mazda mats and full tank of petrol on a dealer used Mazda 3 hatch last year in July.

    • +2

      So not new then.

      • +1

        Not too old either

        • +2

The margins on used cars are astronomical compared to the margins on new cars. It’s like comparing an apple to an orange.

You got $500 off a car that probably had $3~5,000 worth of margin in it. OP’s new car would probably have about $1,000 of margin in it at most.

    • That was last year, hardly relevant.

  • +11

I think you are being naive to expect discount at this current market, if you know they have long queue then you know it means they have shortage. Supply and demand my friend, if you didn't wanted to buy RRP then there will be another happy person paying to get their new car earlier.

    • Seems like many people who have recently bought cars replying to this thread have gotten 4-6.5% discounts in 2022

      • +1

Depends on car model, colour options etc. Some cars have their demo cost more than brand new RRP. I bought brand new Mazda last year with only 3 months wait, 7% discount, the catch is going through a broker because they still have a fleet discount contract with dealership. Try them, I am sure it will saves you a lot of time then just going around to every dealerships. You just need to tolerate that dealer that gives you discount will be 1-2 hr away.

        • Ah that's really interesting!! which broker did you use out of curiosity? Perfectly fine driving 2 hours if it saves a couple grand!! 7% is fantastic! thanks heaps for the help!!

          • @kindshibe: John Ca***** from Au** Expe**
I have sent you a message for their details and website. We got the dealer to offer free mat, free fuel, and free delivery.

            • @Alexander420: If a broker can get 7% off, you can get that much off at a dealer.

But… this was last year and the wait was 3 months. What model was it?. What’s the wait time like now?

              • @Euphemistic: Broker have signed contract for fleet discount with dealership, individuals will be a straight no from dealerships. AFAIK waiting time is still 3-5 months.

        • Tried a broker. Given an account which still shows my request, but in a month no dealer has responded. Toyota RAV 4 GX.

  • Do you have a trade-in?

    • No trade-in unfortunately

    • will trade-in helps ? like say i have 2016 mazda 3 sp25 gt and would love to get mazda cx 5 top end!

      • +1

With all the bells and whistles?

  • Originally, he predicted that it would last through 2023. However, in his latest remarks he said that date has now "drifted" into 2024.

Gelsinger said shortages have now hit equipment and "some of those factory ramps will be more challenged."

  • I know a couple of people who have got a few thousand off the RRP, but it was off their SUVs range ~$50K.
The Mazda 3 definitely has much smaller margins so don't expect anything near that amount!

    • the mazda 3 I'm looking at is $44k so good to know you can get a couple of grand knocked off RRP in this market!! thanks for the reply!

  • Floor mats?

    • better than nothing!

  • +6

I guess its been 4 hours since someone asked about the current non existent car discounts

    • A definition of insanity…

  • +1

10% is way too optimistic, but it is absolutely still worth trying to negotiate in the current market. I negotiated around 5% off RRP plus the usual throw ins (boot liner, full tank of fuel, free first service). This was one month ago for a Rav 4 Cruiser Hybrid, which is one of the most in-demand cars in Australia.

Was also looking at the Mazda CX-5 at the time and the Mazda dealer was quite willing to discount to steer us away from the Rav 4.

Probably varies depending on the car, and you should expect less discount for cheaper cars.

    • Yeah figured 10% was a little optimistic (a man can dream right!)

Amazing to know ~5% + extras is a good target!! Really appreciate the reply thank you!

      • If you can be flexible about which dealership you buy from, your best bet is probably to be willing to walk out if the salesman says no discount. Worst case scenario is that all of the dealers stay firm on RRP, in which case all you've lost is time.

If you're willing to shop around you can try to get the dealers to beat each other on price. Having a written quote helps but not all salesmen will be willing to give you one, because they know you will use it to shop around. Again, the worst that will happen is that they say no.

Only downside to negotiating a discount is that supposedly some salesmen might bump your order down the queue in favour of people paying full price. Not really any way of proving / disproving this unfortunately.

        • Only downside to negotiating a discount is that supposedly some salesmen might bump your order down the queue in favour of people paying full price. Not really any way of proving / disproving this unfortunately.

          I call BS on this

        • Cheers for the tips!! I reckon that's what i'll do - just go to all the dealers willing to buy it immediately if they can give me the best price and see what I get. Really appreciate the help thank you!!

  • I got 4% on a BMW 1 series recently.

As others have said, it’s a hot market. There was one that recently arrived off the ship and was unallocated, one more coming in a month but I didn’t get any choice of colour or options. If I wanted to do that it was 4-6 months at best.

    • +6

Did you get the optional indicators? (just shit-stirring ya! 😋)

      • +3

By the lack of response I think that Josh and Tammi have just realised that they forgot to select that option box.

        • +1

At least they save on blinker fluid.

        • Damn, my stealthy name hath been decoded.

      • What’s an indicator?

    • Thats an impressive discount you managed to get on a car available immediately! thanks for the reply!

      • Somewhat, I still paid more for it than I would have pre-covid so the discount is still a false economy of sorts. Keep in mind I had a trade in, but ALWAYS negotiate the trade in value prior to the car value. Otherwise sure, they’ll knock 10% off on the new car, but they’ll knock the same amount off the trade in value they were originally going to offer you.

Without a trade in, you shouldn’t have to worry with this fact.

  • I guess if you go in expecting 0%, then ask and succeed in getting anything other than pure undiluted condescendence from old mate dealer, then that's gotta be a bonus.

  • I remember the good old days when a new car had a full tank of fuel.
    (I feel old). lol

    • Pretty sure all the Japanese brands do, suzuki, mazda and nissan

    • +2

What???? My new EV isn't fully charged, you're sh1ttin' me!

    • I booked a new Corolla sedan. It comes with full tank of fuel.

  • probably nothing, but dosent hurt to try does it

  • Mazda 3 Hatch… such a good looking car. Always grabs my attention when I see it on the road.

    • Such a nice looking car right! and the interior looks & feels better than a entry level bmw/merc too!

  • If it's the first car you're buying then why not buy a decent used car and save some money? Being put on a waiting list for 6 months to a year on average, paying higher than normal prices due to shortages, and as soon as you take it out the dealership it has lost a big % of its value, and keeps depreciating from there on. Is it really worth it? Your money, so your choice.

    • Used car prices are just inflated

  • but when you get put on the waitlist surely they have every incentive to lower the price?

I think you missed the supply-demand class at school.

  • +1

We got 1k off our CX-30, im 6'3, normal 3 was just to small for myself.

    • +1

Do you think op will get more off if he isn't as tall?

    • Cheers mate thats a decent amount in this market!! thanks for the reply!

    • I'm 6'3" and fit comfortably in a Mazda 3. But I only weigh 90kg.

      • I'm 6'2" and fit in all these cars that people say are "too small" as well.

        • Main two issues:
Head room is low, most likely would be suitable if it had a low seat like a alfa romeo 156 or similar sports car of similar size.
Back seat has no room with seat in proper position and nearly impossible for a 6month-2 year old in proper baby seat position with legs sticking out.

I got 6.5% off a Mazda CX-5 GTSP Turbo and delivery took 2 months from date of ordering (mid Jan)

    • Oh amazing that's a solid discount!!! good to know that's what Mazda's offering in 2022. Thanks heaps for the reply it really helps!

  • Just remember if you don’t get as much discount as you thought, you’ve got all that extra time to save up while you wait for delivery.

  • I have a fleet discount contact. Message me for their details.

    • +1

      PM'd!!

    • +1

Can u share the contact to me too

They do not make money on selling you vehicles for cash - in fact I would not mention the word "cash"…
They make their money on selling you unnecessary add-ons and financing.

All cause are heavily discounted to draw you in…. you are not going to get 10%. It is not a antiques store.

  • I inquired with a car broker for a Mazda 3 touring with vision pack - retail about 37K, their offer was 34K.

    The wait would be 3 - 4 months which I didn't have - I bought an in-stock sedan for a smaller discount.

    • Dude this is amazing - literally exactly what I wanted to know!!

Which car broker did you use to get that offer?

      Thanks heaps for the help!!

      • It was thru: MBA Car Buying Service.

This was thru a professional association so I'm not sure how available it is generally.

I ended up negotiating with Mt Gravatt Mazda as they were the only Brisbane dealer with any stock. They wouldn't go below 36K for a soul red Mazda 3 auto sedan touring with vision pack. I needed the car straight away. There were no hatchbacks of the same type.

To be honest I was surprised there was any discount. I bought the car in mid Jan 22. I gather there has been a small price rise since.

        Good luck.

  • There is no incentive to discount new vehicles.Dealers sell everything they can get virtually.

  • Everyone on forums will tell you that you can't get a discount for some reason.

The reality is that you can get a discount but it will be around 5% or so.

    • Not with Honda or MB you won’t.(fact)

  • 10% discount is probably 3 years ago pre COVID.

I got a $1,800 discount on my Mazda CX3 2021 last year around June plus Slim Plate (dealer ended refunding the Slim Plate fee since they put the wrong one on which was $180 on top of the discount).

  • +1

If anyone's looking through this thread still, I got 1500 off RRP for the Mazda 3 evolve.

    • how and was it an order or floor stock?

      • Order, about a month wait time and I just bargained for it.

  • so did my friend recently, but it was a MY22 brand new car

  • I just made an order for the new model coming in with wireless carplay at top trim (astina) with metallic paint. The dealership was able to give me 5% off driveaway price with floormats and free tint. Currently anticipating my order to come in at 3 months time. To my knowledge, earliest shipment is in July but there is no stock, shipment after that would be in early september which is my current allocation. Even then, if you don't order now you probably wont get a car till much later in the year.

    • What model exactly and how did you go about asking for a discount? 5% is quite a lot for a brand new, ordered car, no?

We are looking at doing similar pretty soon so any and all advice would be much appreciated,
      Cheers

      • I bought the mazda 3 in astina.

        I shopped around in sydney
