What's wrong with digital?
Can't get games from other retailers so can't take advantage of offers, promos, clearances, used goods sellers, etc.
Games cost more, can't sell games if you want to, at the mercy of Sony keeping the store open in the future, you don't really "own" the games.
Would happily go all digital because the sound of the disc drive is kind of annoying, but can't get past the bargains that can be had with physical.
@TheContact: The disk drive in my case is silent. They need to offload all of the data to the SD during the install to take advantage of the increase in speed. Or even if the drive makes any noise, my headphones on the lowest volume would block it out.
@TheContact: I've been playing elden ring on it and the disc drive spins maybe once per hour at most.
Games get installed to the SSD anyway so it's not like it constantly needs to spin or anything.
@TheContact: You may have just pointed out the only positive of the digital edition console that I actually care about.
@TheContact: u wot, all games installs to the console now and only ever spin at the start to check the license.
What if you're really rich?
As an anecdote to what others here have said; I bought Guardians of the Galaxy for $50 or so during one of the crazy Amazon Prime/Black Friday/increased Cashback periods (can't remember exactly) and then sold it back after finishing it for $60 bucks.
Here on Ozbargain alone I've picked up things like AC Valhalla for $9 and the Complete Nioh Collection for $19 at Target/harvey's etc. during clearances/pricing errors.
My first PS5 was actually a digital model, I later got lucky during an EB games restock a few months later and rebought a Disc model, selling the digital to a mate. They're just not worth the $150 difference as opposed to the deals that our local brick and mortar/Amazon prices have on games compared to the overpriced PSN store.
So, you prefer disc mode instead of digitial only?
@Edsanwong: I have a US account and I do buy both when they're on sale cheaper on their storefront (I have to admit, I hate having to disc swap all the time and having permanent things is always nice) but for the games that I'm very much on the fence about or that I figure I wouldn't play more than once like Guardians and Ratchet and Clank earlier I prefer to get physical so I can pawn them off without much loss.
@Stoibs: Thank you, I am not sure what I want tbh. Getting a digital only is simpler, but the disc mode is $150-$200 more expensive with access to cheaper games… Oh well, I cant get a PS5 any way at the moment
Damn I wish I sold mine. I also bought for $50, played for a bit, put it down and never picked it up again. Does it take a while to finish?
@cykezero: Guardians? My playtime was about 20hrs.
I honestly that it was an 'alright' arcade action thing, but I don't agree with all the hype or GOTY praise it got.
@Stoibs: I probably have a way to go but can run through without looking for collectables. Who did you sell it to for $60?
@cykezero: Honestly just EB games, admittedly it was during one of their enhanced trade-in value promos so I lucked out :D
I would have been happy to just get some or 'most' of the cost back. Guess it still held value within the first month or so.
your locked into ONE STORE thats what is wrong with digital. good luck getting dirt cheap games from the many retailers that sell physcial.
You're locked into buying from the PS Store, so you end up losing a lot of money in the long term. For example, the new Ratchet and Clank game is currently $68 on Amazon, or $125 on the PS Store. Three games at this kind of disparity and the digital only console is already costing you more, let alone 20-50 games across the whole console's lifetime.
yeah digital sucks.
yeah digital is suck, game more pricy and you can't trade or sell disc.
yeah digital sucks… repeat after me
Yeah digital sucks.
You can share games with your friends if you have physical copies. I just borrowed new HZD that my friend finished and I gave him my Returnal.
Nothing wrong with digital if you're a patientgamer I've barely played more than $30 for a game and been digital since my PS4 dvd drive died 2 years into it's life. Add a US playstation account as well to get sometimes better deals. Got Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate for PS5 for $20. Was about $40-$50 here for the same game.
Oos
OOS
Damn it didn’t even last a minute compared to the big drop from EB Games yesterday
Tires within the first 2 minutes - no success :/
Similar thing happened just now too - they dropped the physical version just before the digital
I saw the drop about 2-3 minutes after it started and I had already missed out :(
Physical version? :)
Ha! Yeah, just making sure it wasn't an NFT version or something :P!
But yes, definitely meant disc edition* - thanks for the pick up :P
OOS already. That lasted about 60 seconds.
"That lasted about 60 seconds."
That's what she said.
Guessing most of these get scalped later on eBay gumtree Facebook. It's quite pathetic actually.
Sony just needs to flood the market with PS5. It's shocking that after 1-2 years they still can't produce enough of them.
Sony: there's an enduring global chip shortage
Random person: no, see, you "just" do it, like Shia Labeouf
Sony: wow why didn't we ever think of that
I dont care… just DO IT!
Don't let dreams be dreams…
How much would scalper make reselling these?
Some of the facebook marketplace posts I've seen are going for 1000-1100 for the disc version. Not sure if they are actually selling at that price though.
A good way to find out is to search ebay for ps5 and show only sold results in the search.
Yeah, they sell.
@vodamerc: Honestly I don't think people will pay over 850-900.
Ebay can be fake results as people can just choose not to pay.
It hasn't been over 1000 for a while I am pretty sure.
@JL1: This will be unpopular around here but, I've had a few and never sold one for less than $1000. The last being only 1 week ago. Recently the market has slowed down a lot though.
@vodamerc: I am from Sydney myself, and absolutely no one offered over $900 like 2 months ago. A lot of dodgy people inquired about it but I did try to go for a quick sale with who seemed the most normal.
I guess if you're firm enough, some people might get desperate after a while.
@JL1: I bought one for 1300 few days ago.
@CoreJava: You're kidding right? Is it that bad in Melbourne?
I am in Sydney and pretty sure it would cost around $900 to get one.
How many months has it been? We still don't have a steady supply of new consoles….at least the scalper prices have decreased
Series s still the best value next gen
Sony should make this $800 with a $200 cashback applicable to the original purchaser and limited to only one cashback per year. That would help end scalping.
Actually a great idea, but like eBay, I don't think Sony care about scalping, a sale is a sale for them I think.
A lot of companies build in the FOMO limited stock into their marketing by design as well, I'm thinking Sony loves that this thing is so desired still. I've seen a lot of people buy one just because they had the chance to get one, if it was on the shelves in stores they probably wouldn't have got one yet.
Scalpers don't buy games, services or accessories though. So I think Sony would much rather genuine buyers enter the PS5 ecosystem noting that they probably don't make much money on the sale of the console its self.
But the person they sell it to do enter the ecosystem
The scalper buyers buy all those things from Sony once they have a console.
In theory they may buy less since they paid more for the console, but I think most find a way to buy what they would have bought anyway
The consoles will eventually enter the ecosystem, either from scalpers or genuine buyers. The scarcer the machines, the more sale they make because there is no replacement of their products in the market. Why would they stop the scalpers?
Unless scalping helps their business despite what they “show as an attempt to stop it” but yer that is a great idea
really crazy still, not even 1 min got ozbargained …
Bet half didn't even want digital version
Gorrrrn before OZB post submitted! What's it called when things were already 'far beyond silly' at the time of launch, and haven't improved…?
Wonder how many bought digital over disc over their FOMO lmao
I love Ben's review "This console was the nail in the coffin for me as a hardcore gamer. Its definately tailored to casual gamers."
Kind of agree. It's not a PC. And it's tailored to the better type of gamer.
I got the disc version from Amazon today. Now I most likely to cancel pre-order from eb games. Can't believe I got two
Scalp it on eBay for $2.4 million. You are now rich.
Eb games preorders last the longest and best way to get a ps5.
It's ironic that I have to say eB is the best choice.
Hey, i'm trying to get a playstation, how the hell do i go about this? any help, any decent way to get an alert?
Twitter aus ps5 pages and subscribe
Yep, do this.
Only EB Games has listings up long enough to last on Ozbargain after awhile.
Any other retail outlet and you have to strike within 5 mins of release online.
I followed the twitter stock pages, ozbargain and one of the discord groups that would also post the deals. I turned notifications on for all of them and also used an app called LED Me Know which allows you to create notification light for when your display is off. Good luck mate.
Its actually very easy. Dont rely on alerts. Just call a couple jb hifi's and ask if you can be put into the ps5 waiting list. Not all do it but enough that I was called 3 times from 3 seperate stores that they had one for me. I only bought one though :)
Oh no I missed a PS5 deal : (
Available again
Digital 🤮
