2kg Mattock $2 (Save $27.99) - Super Cheap Auto (Maybe Nationwide?)

460

I was in Super Cheap Auto Nunawading (VIC) to buy some coolant and was walking around the store and spotted this gem for only $2. For those that don't know what a mattock is, its a garden tool for digging out roots and loosening soil. Grabbed the last one from the Nunawading store but it might be nationwide considering it has an expiry date on the price tag.

you could use it to bust up old computers and printers like Office Space

  • +3

..why the heck does a car parts store have this?

    • maybe for camping, or self defence…

      • +2

        or self defence…

Nothing like a fine piece of hickory. ;)

        • LOL, I got one…it's not hickory but it's a fine plastic whacking stick! Next zombie that attacks me is cruisin' for a beheadin'! :)

The dude at the checkout rang it up, blinked twice & shook his head, then said "Umm, that'll be two dollars thanks!" :p

For burying people you run over?

  • +5

    great bargain, whatever it is?

Imagine a miner's pickaxe, but instead of tapering to a sharp point at each end, it becomes more like a wide flat-bladed screwdriver, about the width of your palm. Sort of like a cross between the miner's pickaxe and a double-sided axe.

Useful for digging trenches across your lawn, also useful for removing smallish tree stumps.

        Digging trenches?

        He knows too much.

Not a good one for Matt Newton to have in the Car.

    • +3

He would prob bash the mattock if the head came off it.

    • +1

Love a good Mathew Newton joke. So do Patty and Bert, seriously, they think he's a d1ck on crack.

  • +7

Are there only vertical ones? Would prefer horizontal.

    • +8

Photo taken using the Steven Hawking Camera App.

    • +1

Damn, they had the horizontal, but only in left handed! :p

    • the head has two sides, a horizontal side (the mattock) and a vertial side (like an axe). i am pretty sure the two i just bought are ambidextrous

      • +3

The horizontal side is known as an "adze". The other side can be either an axe or a pick (in this case an axe which is the more common form of mattock). The implement as a whole is known as a mattock.

i bought the last two from the Glen Waverley store 30 min ago, called them as soon as i saw this post, got them to hold some for me. the counter lady was very surprised about the price when she scanned them. :)

  • Just called, only Rowville has stock it seems.

  • Not to be confused with 2kg of mutton:

A Mattock is a versatile hand tool, used for digging and chopping, similar to the pickaxe. It has a long handle, and a stout head, which combines an axe blade and an adze (cutter mattock) or a pick and an adze (pick mattock).

    • +11

Damnit! Imagine my surprise when I bit into my juicy rich olive oil and oregano covered roast, only to be greeted with the jaw-breaking hurt of trying to eat roast mattock.

I'm glad you warned me away from this fruitless venture sir, it surely would have been embarrassing for me, let alone disappointing for the family.

Will come in handy when there is a zombie apocolypse.

  • This won't be available in Western Australia but nice find :)

  • -1

i would say it is a pricing error

    $29.99 at my local supercheap

    • was for me too, but when scanned it comes to 2 dollars!

  • Full price at my local, and none in stock anyway.

  • +3

    bargain… thats only $1/kg ;)

  • +7

Positive to this deal for making me aware that what I have been calling a pick is actually a mattock. I would also like to thank Wikipedia for it's excellent description:

"A mattock is a versatile hand tool, used for digging and chopping, and beheading zombies, similar to the pickaxe."

    from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattock

    • +1

Good call, apart from its obvious zombie decaptition duties, IMHO a mattock is close to the shovel as the number one indispensible garden tool!

My next fave garden implement would have to be a 'ho of course! :p

      • +1

I'm a great gardener. My favourite implement is the chainsaw!

        • +3

Yes, I'd say that makes you an excellent gardener. I make it a point never to disagree with a man wielding a chainsaw! ;)

  • These are great to take along on your next string of burgs in the burbs. Now all I need to replace is the balaclava that i had to ditch. Maybe Ted's Camera's sell them now?

Oh, what do you call a country run by Mattock's? A Mattocracy of course. Durr.

    • Hmmm… Australia is a country…
      My thoughts exactly!

      • oh gee, you're completely correct.

I should have said 'what do you call the system of Government in a country (which has obviously allowed parliamentary seats to inanimate objects) with a dominant group of politically aware garden tools known as "The Mattock's"'?

..i think. But now I'm assuming that a) the system of a Mattocracy HAS a parliament, and b) mattock's are not as dumb as they would have us believe and may one day take over the world.

Better keep your eyes on these guys if you get one.

Are we still debating the existance of Israeli's on OzBargain? far more interesting.

        • I can't tell based on your comment if you got but subtle and probably a bit too crude joke re: Australian politicians… I think I will probably withdraw that comment… Though I must say I thought it was quite witty.

When were we arguing about the existence of Israelis on ozbargain ?

  • Available in SA but not ticketed. I got it scanned and bingo - $2!

Thanks a lot, really handy to keep in the car or camper for camping.

BTW: this is a 'mini' mattock with the handle about 30cms long.

    • which store?

    • +1

you must have gotten the 750g one. I picked up a 2kg one (last one) at Wodonga today. Not ticketed but scanned for $2

      • Aha. You would be correct. Mine was the last one in Enfield SA.

    • one i got in albury nsw was full sized 2kg!!

    • Yeh mine was the full sized one too, handle was about 1m, didn't notice any small ones, would have got one too as I already had a full sized one

  • Got one. Its the 760g one with the plastic handle. There was only one left and I got it. Gosford store.

  • +1

    • just gotta catch a cat to re strings mez banjo…

Just pull the tail taut & play the cat, it will sound better than a banjo! :p

I thought I might be too late, but this morning I got the last one at Cessnock, displayed at $29.99, for $2. The chap at the checkout was very impressed. Now I can attack that bush my Missus wants destroyed.

Now I can attack that bush my Missus wants destroyed.

      Giggity!!!

  • +2

Is this really such a good idea?
    Look what happened before!

    • ROFLMFAO…I had to re-read that a couple of times to be sure I was not misreading it, sure enough it's just as ludicrous every time! Words fail me! :o
