Why on earth does someone need a $300 toothbrush?

    • +1

You do realise there’s two in that price?

      • -3

You can get an oral b one for $30 at Woolies though.

        • no contest, the $30 Oral B needs charging often (small battery) and performance not as good

          • -2

@payton: Do you think it is worth paying $350 extra to be able to not have to bring the charger when you go on holiday?

            • +1

@Quantumcat: Performance of the two items are miles apart also, not just the battery charge level.
The Philips is a premium product and priced accordingly, thankfully you're not just paying for the brand, but also performance. After claiming the cashback its about $155 per unit which is not bad.

I bought one of those $30 Oral B brushes and found myself charging it every day towards the end of its life (a few months?), because otherwise it wasn't cleaning well.
You should compare this to the premium Oral B products, also whether you prefer the oral-b circular brush head or Philips.

could wait for something like this to get discounted again

              • @payton: What exactly is the difference in performance? Can you put it into words? If all the mechanical parts were taken out and put in an unidentifiable third party case could you tell the two apart?

Unless the oral b one doesn't clean your teeth, or it hurts you (neither of which are true) I cannot see how any difference would be worth $350.

But then again I also can't see the point in owning a $500k car when a $30k one has all the features you need and gets you from point A to point B comfortably and reliably 🤷‍♀️

                • @Quantumcat:

If all the mechanical parts were taken out and put in an unidentifiable third party case could you tell the two apart?

                  Short answer is yes.
Bit like choosing to buy only very cheaply made products: kitchen appliances, homewares or eating only the cheapest food … if will still get the job done eventually or to a degree but far from comparable. You might not get the same energy, nutrition or enjoyment out of those, but will keep you alive.

Likewise the 500K car (which is massive exaggeration on the analogy) will be a lot more capable than the 30K. If you're happy with the lowest end of the scale, then end of story.

                  • @payton: You haven't described what the difference is yet.

                    • @Quantumcat: I've tried both and its significant difference. The $30 unit is built to a price point and you get what you pay for.
I didn't think of spending more time describing it since I'm not even sure it'll be useful to you given you've made up your mind?

                      • @payton: Buy what is the difference? Does the Oral B one always miss a certain spot despite you brushing the same way, or anything like that?

Expensive appliances have a reason to be more expensive - eg a more expensive toaster might toast both sides of the bread more evenly, a more expensive rice cooker doesn't burn on the bottom or cooks faster, etc

                        • @Quantumcat: The premium unit has stronger oscillation and keeps at this level of power for a whole a lot longer. Thus, the job gets done quicker and leaves a better mouth clean feel.
The brush head performance on $30 unit gets quite noticeably weak after only several months, enough so that I charge it daily and bin it later because it was still not that satisfactory

If you're in the market, I think key factor is which brush head shape & mechanism you prefer. For people buying this deal, advise you to either give the 2nd unit to your partner or sell it (not sure if there are two chargers in box), so the second unit is being used and not just sit in storage for many years.

      • Yeah I meant on RRP of $600 for bundle.

After cashback & redemption works out about $150 each which for these brushes is very good. Well worth it. Far better than any other electric brush. Some people have had issues with them leaking. Just don't wash running water right on the shaft entry point and hold it with shaft down under the tap. The brush heads are pretty expensive, but they do last a long time.

I use electric in the morning and manual at night. (their Airflosser is rubbish though. The Waterpik is much better).

    • You can get 3 for $3.95 if you don't like it: https://www.bunnings.com.au/josco-3-piece-hand-wire-brush-ki… 😁

I wouldn't buy these on Amazon.

Their return policy is a bit hit and miss after the initial 30 days after purchase return window is closed.

I bought my Philips Sonicare from Shaver Shop and it broke 7 months in, they replaced for new on the spot.
Shaver Shop has an awesome walk in and swap/return for new policy if anything should go wrong.

    • I've bought an older model from Amazon UK years ago. It stopped working just before 2 years warranty period was ending. Contacted Philips Australia and they sent me a new handle.

    • I bought my with 2 years extended warrenty from Binglee. I replaced it twice (year 2 and year 4) by contacted Philips support, they sent me the new handles swiftly without giving me much hassle. I think their customer service is very reliable. (not their toothbrushs)

    • I bought mine from Amazon. As long as it's Amazon AU the Philips support have no issues, but they did specifically ask if it was Amazon AU.

Personally this product is a bit dodgy anyway, I've had the black one replaced once and the pink one replaced twice in two years and the black one is on the way out again just after warranty expired.

It's a known problem and to be fair to Philips, they replace the handle quickly and with minimum fuss. But its a hassle that you would rather avoid on such an expensive toothbrush.

    • I got mine from Amazon 6 months ago. About a month ago the shaft of my toothbrush became loose and needed replacement. Technically Amazon should be dealing with warranty but I decided to contact Philips directly since I already had registered my device on their website.

The person helping me at Philips asked me a couple of questions and requested the receipt from Amazon. I received my replacement brush in less than a week.

    • Speaking of returns - mine (purchased from Costco around a year ago) is starting to play up, with the button only working when pressed really hard at a certain angle.

Anyone else had this issue before?

  • Emm… the CB started from yesterday, but mine was just bought on Sunday. Should I return and re-order or try my luck at Phillips?

  • not worth it that price. better off getting https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/83253/waterpik-compl… flosser gets all the bits toothbrush misses

    • +2

      Apples for Oranges….

  • Great product, worth the dollaridoos. Had one over 5+ years, the oscillation on the brush head (prob linked to battery strength) now not as good as when it was new but still quite usable.
Genuine brush heads for pack of 3 about $35 from Amazon and each lasts 1-2 years before I felt it should be replaced.
It rarely required recharging too, unlike the Oral B $30 one at woolies.

  • I read the cashback terms but not sure if the cashback will work with the current discount on Amazon.
