Elements and My Passport, which model is better?

Decent price, but it’s a shame the WD portable drives are not standard SATA internal. Prefer seagate portable drives for this reason.

Im fairly sure all 5tb can be shucked though (dont know about all the other capacities)? There are only 1 or 2 5TB 2.5" drive SKUs manufactured and theyre both sata internal

      • The PCB is usually different with a soldered USBC

    • Just upvoted your comment. Could you please elaborate on the significance of the portable drives being standard SATA internal for a layman's terms? Ty

Can only ever be used externally. Cannot be removed from the enclosure and put directly into a computer.

Also if the USBC port is damaged, you cannot easily get data off the drive. Whereas with a seagate, the USBC port is seperate and if it becomes damaged you can get your data by opening up the enclosure and putting the drive into a new one or directly into a computer.

  • Saw one of these at the Fitzroy Officeworks the other day. Seemed a decent price if you want a big drive. Happy to be told why I’m wrong so I’m not tempted.

  • Mmmm…probably about due to roll over the main storage and back up drives. Thanks, op

    • How often do you replace them? And what do you do with the old ones?

  • Same price on Amazon, reviews are not very good.

    • Just curious to know why people are down voting the Amazon deal given it is the same product as Office Works. Is it due to the single negative vote? Looking to buy via Amazon as I have Prime but a bit hesitant that people doesn't seem to be keen on the Amazon deal.

      • +1

I'd say because of the review.
Why buy from Amazon when this is $50 cheaper?
I'm pretty sure you can get free delivery on this from office works.

Thanks for the reply. Amazon has the same price as office works a few hours ago. Price must have gone up since.

  • Do these work okay as an Xbox Series X drive? Not to run games but to store and copy across to the internal when needed.

I only ask as I'm still using an old lower capacity "powered" drive from my Xbox One days.

  • Would these be good for long term photo storage?

I have a portable ssd that will run out soon and want another hdd to store pics outside of paying cloud fees, throw it in a safe outside my house etc

Or better off sticking with ssd's for that?

    • +2

Will work fine fine for that. Just make sure it’s not your only copy. That also applies to ssds.

    • Just be aware that SSDs are terrible for offline or 'cold storage' purposes. Unlike HDDs, they need to be powered on occasionally to maintain data integrity.

      • didn't realise that. thanks.

  • There was one left at QV in Melbourne CBD when we were there this morning.
