  • Would this be suitable for recipes in the kitchen? Sick of using my phone

    • Guess so, I have a google hub from Telstra day, perfect In my kitchen.

    • Check the review on the Amazon page, there is one specific for kitchen recipe use.

    • +1

      Yep. They work well.

I didn't realise it has to be plugged in at all times though. I thought they had a battery.

      • +2

ac power only. It does come with the standard Amazon fat wall pg which can crowd a multi-outlet ac wall plate.

        • Yep. That was a big disappointment to learn after purchase.

        • You can buy 3rd party battery bases

We sue one on the Echo and it is great - turns it into a portable speaker

      • Would a powerbank work?

        • Good question. I have no idea though.

        • I think they use an 18V power supply.

  • Thanks, picked up one 🙌

  • +1

This one has an aux port right?

  • We Luke this be perfect to work with the Ring doorbells?

    • +2

Yeah that’s what I mostly use it for, along with hue lights

      • Is there an internet browser that we can google and leave the recipe screens up and stuff? Read one review where it says it just uses their in house thing and reads out the recipe. I prefer to choose which recipes

        • Yeah it’s not good for that at all. I have an ipad which i prefer as I use paprika.

    • I use mine to control a variety of devices via an Alexa skills (mini-apps). Dyson fans, TP-link power-boards, Bose Sound-systems Looking for a similar Ring doorbell system.

  • Damn 18% cashback has expired

    • +5

ShopBack has Echo range cashback rate at 10% at the moment.

  • +1

Thanks OP, I've got Alexa Echo's all throughout the house but wasn't sure if I really had a need for an Echo Show, but at this price I'm willing to just see if I can make use of it.

  • +8

Sorry i have sold my soul to google, alexa.

    • +6

      Sell your body to Alexa!

    • +3

I've only half sold my soul this far. Do Google and Alexa play together well?

      • +2

Are you (too)serious? Of course it will get confusing like oh in this room i need to say google, in that room its alexa… and so on

        .

        • +1

We've got both in our house and found that if you have google/alexa in adjoining rooms they'll often hear you anyway - even if you forget which one is in your current room and call for the other assistant.

and just in reply to @TooSerious2, we've got an echo dot and a home mini in the same room and there's no issues.

        • +4

You can change what Alexa responds to and make them all the same.

          • +1

@Oz em: Shame Google didn't provide the same feature. Way easier to say "Alexa" than "ok/hey google".
I end up using Alexa more than google.

            • -1

@ShouldIBuyIt: I have both too and Google nest is collecting dust, especially Alexa can support Apple music

              • +2

@GeneralKeen: Google Nest devices have supported Apple Music in Australia since late last year.

      • +3

Absolutely not!! I use both ecosystems side by side - watch prime video on my echo when making meals - most music stream through the echo amazon music but sometimes some songs aren’t available on my free service so I use (free) Spotify on the Google nest - my calendar/shopping lists linked with wife are Google so that comes in handy for day to day things like that, but also being an OzB like the notifications on the echo when deliveries from prime arrive. Either device can control home lighting /smart devices. Echo is better from Drop In feature and announce to other Alexa devices. Works for us, and of course both Echo and Nest bought on special. Both have their pros/cons and it would be hard in my circumstance to align with one ecosystem

        • Thanks for that. I think I'm in.

        • Another thing is if you're using with multiple Harmony remote hubs. Can only (easily) have one set up. I have one set up with Alexa in one room, and on Google in another room.

There was a secondary hub skill but you can't just say Alexa turn on the TV, would have to specify the hub name etc (and I think it was problematic). Don't think Google can handle more than one at all.

  • I was interested, til I started reading the reviews 😬

  • So does this have zigbee hub support? Been waiting for one of those for a reasonable price for ages

    • +1

Only the Echo Show 10 has Zigbee hub support.

  • Really great price

  • +6

You can watch tele on it. Install https://github.com/NovaGL/alexa-video (courtesy og Glenn on WP) then add the stations you want https://github.com/iptv-org/iptv/tree/master/streams.

BTW, not that big a difference between gen 1 and gen 2, https://www.pocket-lint.com/smart-home/buyers-guides/amazon/….

    • Think this could run kodi?

    • that's between show 5 gen 1 and gen 2

    • and it fits inside a bag of chip

  • +2

The Echo Auto car version is also on sale atm at $39 (was $79).. not sure if this is worth getting for the car when you can use google assistane

    • I would buy this if it had a screen and I could just keep it in there and not have to take out my phone. But they they would probably want 500 bucks for it for no reason

  • +6

The only perceptible difference in the hardware between the Echo Show 8 Gen 1 (this device) and Gen 2 is the front camera. On the Gen 1 it is a paltry 1 Megapixel, on the Gen 2 it is 13 Megapixel. Otherwise they are pretty much identical.

Too bad its about 1cm too wide to put where I want it to go.

Edit: another show stopper for me - the Echo Show 8 does not have a full screen clock option, like the Show 5 does. Amazed that Amazon have left that out.

    • +3

Thank you…was about to upgrade from 5 to 8, mostly used as a clock. That blows.

      • Same
Especially for parents to be able to see the clock from far away

  • FYI, got a $10 off first order with the app from the account I created for the $50 mastercarsd deal.
Although it was not my first order with the app.
$49 free delivery. Not too bad

    • Did you have to use any particular code? Also isnt the $10 off over now? How did you manage it?

      • +1

Got it in an email titled "<name>, Big Smile Sale deals start now!" and the code is 10APP.
I had already placed 2 orders via the app on that account. Wasn't expecting for the code to work tbh.

  • Can you install .apk apps on it ?

  • Thanks Op. Order 3 to change from google to amazon hahaha.

  • How is the Spotify on this? Can you scroll playlists and choose songs like the app, or is it the gimped version like on the Google Smart Display?

  • +2

    That is a fantastic price.

And as an added bonus if it's your first echo device you get 3 months free access to Amazon Music as well.

  • Many thanks! :3

  • +2

I use Google ecosystem as well as Alexa.
Google is there in each room, and functionally, it is absolutely great.
Have Alexa only in two rooms.

Changed Alexa language to recognize multiple languages.
Alexa is definitely better, if not speaking in English, as her voice is more natural, instead of the mechanical sound in Google. ( In my native language).
In the mornings, I whisper to her asking for the time, and she responds to me by whispering back, so as not to disturb my wife.

If you are buying just one device, nest hub max is very good, if a bit pricy.

  • +2

Me, Benny, Aaron and two Italian guys can't thank this poster enough.

  • +1

Thanks Hamza. I bought one this morning, and 5 hours later was advised it had already shipped. Tracking shows Australia Post already has it. Got to give Amazon top marks for fast shipping in this case.

For the 3 months Music Unlimited, the T&C say previous subscribers are inelligible. I was a previous subscriber but received the invitation anyway. I think if it was more than 12 months ago they count it as never subscribed.

  • +1

I can see the red bull tv app is installed by default.
Is there anyway to get the NBA app installed?

  • Purchased 2 as an upgrade from the 5s and I like it. Great for ring cams and a great price.
