  • Damn, just bought the RM1000x for $10 more, now to decide whether to return or not…

    • should be fine. I returned a case to scorptec last month. no issue

    • +2

Consider the time, effort, and energy that goes into returning for $10.

Gut feel is the better bargain is just to leave it.

Edit oh wait RM. Mmm. That is more tricky haha. The improved efficiency probably is entirely meh…but the lower heat/better components hopefully make the Platinum last longer. So I'd swap.

      • Yeah, not worried about $10, more I was on the fence about paying $60 more for the HX when I ordered the RM. I went with the RM being good enough.

    • I did the same but already installed. Ah well. RMx's are still pretty good!

      • yeah, if mine wasn't sitting here unopened, waiting to be installed tomorrow it'd be an easy call, it's a great psu by all accounts. I'm going to stick with it simply because it's here, my current PSU is dying and I want to play games this weekend!

  • My question would be - is 1200W still future proofing…..I guess you need 1600W for future prodding at this stage :(

    • +3

Unlikely to need over 1200w. Honestly 800-900w is probably still plenty for the vast majority of people.

The main future proofing thing would be the pcie5 connector.

      • One reason I'm not worried is nVidia have already said existing cables will work with 4xxx cards.

Might need that 600W that pci-e 5.0 delivers for a 4090ti later down the road, but for the average person that's not going to be an issue for a few years yet, can already get 500W without it.

        • it'll 'work' probably but you lose the comms lines that the actual pcie5 connectors have, not sure how much that improves demand management etc. but probably stops you over drawing from the PSU

          • @menvert: It's just simplifying the cable configuration. Right now GPUs are using up to three 8 pin PCI-e cables with 150W each. The new standard will ask the GPU whether it should deliver 150, 300, 450 or 600W in a single cable, i.e. from 1 to 4 of the current power cables, it doesn't do anything beyond that.

Right now that's managed simply by how many connectors are physically on the GPU. Likely for the next couple of generations we'll see more of what nVIdia did with ampere cards and release special cables with as many 8 pin pci-e connectors to the PSU as needed (if it's modular, if it's not then it'll be something different).

Considering the rumours that nVidia will be releasing a 800W GPU, it'll still be the 12 pin connector + another PCI-e 8 pin + 75W from the socket itself. It seems outdated before it's even properly launched.

  • I have the HX1000 - beast of a CPU

    • +9

yeah but what do you have for a PSU?

Their eBay store also has them at a similar price after discount code for people with discounted ebay gift cards:

  • The first new one I got had a little bit of a problem
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/7KyF42XeirgAA4EX9
And before every wannabe sparky kicks off - had it plugged into and RCD and it's an all plastic switch. Still made me jump though.
MSY have never done an exchange so quickly.

  • Im just hoping GPUs get their own power adapter so we dont have to buy these

Efficiency would be awful. Quality would be terrible (you've seen how cheap video card manufacturers are.. They could spend $2 more on vrm thermal pads for $1000 gpu's for crying out loud), prone to overheating unless actively cooled, more rmas, more bulk.

      Solid no from me.

The only reason to do it is epgu enclosures.

  • I'd suffer your existing psu until ones with pcie5 are a couple generations old. Unless you really need one, i think psus can't be considered a good deal for the next couple of years.

Otherwise you're going to get that itchy trigger finger and buy in a couple of years anyway..

  • Seems as though there are some very well researched comments in this post, so question for people like me: If I want to jump on say a 4070 or 4080 on release which psu one should I buy, I'm already a corsair psu convert. Should I wait for a later revision of the psu with the pci-5 plug as mentioned above?

Amazon have dropped the prices on some of these if you prefer Amazon or want to save a few dollars ($5-$9) and possibly combine with gift cards:

    Corsair HX1000 $250
    Corsair HX1000

    Corsair HX1200 $290
    Corsair HX1200

    Corsair RM850 $149
    CORSAIR RM850 (2021)

Not a lot of stock for some of them and may go to back order.
