Great deal, but I still prefer to use my points on rewards flights

    • +1

      Ditto

    • that's where the value is point/$ right?

      • +2

Yeah, about 1.5-2% from point to cash equivalent.

The 30% off gift cards is about ~0.7%

      • -3

        Its 7c per 1000 points

        • +1

Can you share your maths in more detail?

          • @Coops1: 20,730 PTS = $100 Wish gift card - that is 207.3 points/$

a typical economic seat SYD-LAX one way costs $673
            with classic reward 41,900 PTS+$214 tax - that is 91.3 pints/$

            • +2

@Ray3180: …but if you can find the SYD-LAX ticket with another airline for $400, then arguably you're back to 200 points/$ because you've overpaid for the expensive Qantas flight.

Qantas are rarely the cheapest - if you're flying to London for example, it can be a lot more expensive than some carriers.

              • @Nom: Coast to Coast Flights in Australia seem to be good value for Qantas.

International flights can cost more due to the surcharge depending on the airports.

              • @Nom: Yes I get what you mean. Classic reward is good value for flexibility. Cancelation just costs 7000 points while the $400 ticket could be non refundable.

            • @Ray3180: That's great. But what is the 7c per 1000 points about?

Also, as per Nom post, why on earth would anybody book a classic rewards International flight….shocking value in the main unless your getting 2+ cents per point value.

              • @Coops1: That was from @mhc not me

                • @Ray3180: I know that, and you come back with another calculation in points per $. mhc still hasn’t explained 7c per 1000 points. Just confuses all the poor punters.

Keeping it simple, it’s how much a point is worth in cents!

    • +4

If you can get them. Awards flights have been so patchy.

      • +4

You basically need to be more flexible with the holiday planning. I agree it is pretty patchy if you just have some particular dates in mind, and in those cases I just pay the full price.

      • +1

Funny thing, last year when upgrade my economy to business class, they didn't deduct my point (upgrade via points).

        • Wow that would have been awesome!

          • @nightelves: Yeah, and our family had a whole afternoon to the lounge just keep helping ourselves to the food and drinks while waiting for our boarding.

            • @cloudie9: Are they doing that again? Last time I was in a lounge I had to ask for the food and drinks I wanted.

        • Was that a code share flight or Qantas metal?

      • Could you elaborate a little here please? I've just signed up to the ANZ FF to get the 160K Qantas points. I was under the assumption that I could just pay for my flights using reward points without any issues?

        • +1

Airlines limit availability of tickets you can pay for with points

Also especially with Qantas there's a big difference in value between a rewards flight (good value redemption) and using points to pay instead of cash (which is pretty poor - you may be better off redeeming for gift cards and finding the cheapest flights to where you want to go).

The rewards flight tickets are the ones that will have limited availability.

    • Is it thought?

The assumption points is based on a "retail" price and ignores the tax/charges added on after the points.

What I did in the past was look at the price of an equivalent ticket / usually a "sales" ticket, deduct the tax charges that Qantas will add on.

After that the points ration was under 1%

Havent traveled much recently, so can't compare

If course you can't do the same with upgrades to business class, then its more an imaginiary number you value the business class at

  • Any Macs Pro available?

    • +1

You'd better wait fof 10% off JB Hi Fi I think, but then again if you're after a Mac Pro you probably want BTO hardware, which in that case there's no discount.

      • (In 2017 Qantas Store had a deal for Mac Pro 6,1 for 5000 QFF + $520.53)

edit: found it, had been moved to forums https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/301488

        • Ooooh yea I remember this. This was hilarious.

        • Were any of these honoured? Surely not right

      • -1

I'd wait for the Apple Silicon update for a Mac Pro, unless you specifically want Intel CPUs. For BTO your best bet is probably Apple Gift Cards with bonus Flybuys/Everyday Rewards points?

  • Thanks OP, Garmin Epix (Gen 2) Carbon grey seems pretty good at 1,261.48 + 2,000 points

    • Didnt see any of the Epix listed?

Huh, been a while since I checked my points total. Turns out I cracked the million mark somehow.

Not a great use of points.

      • +2

That's insane. Is the Mac Studio even worth that much?

      • +1

        That’s 3 x RTW ticket in business class…

        • +7

          …..plus $6,000+++ in taxes

          • @capslock: Yeah, just a bit less than $ cost if you value the 1m points at $10,000 on top of the $6,000. Was some good RTW Biz pre Covid at a cheap $

          • @capslock: Book on non-QF metal and you can pay a lot less in taxes (eg JL, CX in particular)

    • I am also happy to help spending your points. Don't even want to go far Exmouth and Darwin trip. Measly 60k points would do :)

    • I treated myself to a couple of things over these lockdown years in their previous sales, things which even if "poor value" points wise to money I convinced myself that, in the long run, these were points I'd be lucky to use any time soon, and not exactly be getting money for them anyway.

I say this here specifically because part of the excuse making was I'm also over 1M points to still go somewhere later :P. Probably wouldn't have ordered stuff if not.

  • site is crashing for me.

  • I have over 150,000 Qantas point. I never used this point yet. What is the best way to use it?? flight upgrade??

    • Best $ value, yes.

      • Then, I will keep saving my point in stead of shopping. Thanks.

        • +35

Depends if you actually value flights at the price point they are set at. A lot of people say the best value redemption ($/point) is business class seats/upgrades. Personally I would never pay the asking price in $ for a business class seat or upgrade because it's not worth that much to me. Similarly, I would judge the value of an economy flight by Jetstar/Virgin prices, not the Qantas price which is often substantially higher, because again the benefits of Qantas flights are not worth the extra cost to me. So I put the dollar value of these types of redemptions lower than Qantas, and lower than other people. I've bought plenty of stuff on the Qantas store when it's on sale and I find it's a great way to use surplus points, and I don't feel at all like I've missed out on using those points for flights instead. All comes down to how much you personally value things like comfy seats and champagne while inside a metal cylinder in the sky.

          • +2

            @jonnyspizza: Exactly.

As an alternative view, I find the experience of long-haul flights horrible. The business class/first class experience actually makes flying not only tolerable, but enjoyable. I'd never pay cash for it personally though.

            • +4

@fivespice: Once you go Business Class it's hard to fall back to Economy Class.

              • @nightelves: Indeed. Same with first class too. After First class, u dont want to go back to business!

          • -5

@jonnyspizza: I am totally with you! In your past experience what was the highest discount Qantas offered and how often did you see this pop up? Thus you say this 30% a good steal?

PS, this is just my opinion, i think some people would value flying on Qantas rather than Jetstar because of better pilot for example. I remember being on Jetstar, this pilots hit the accelerator so fast I couldn't handle the GForce and gave me a headache! Lol

            • @PeeDee: Qantas for the lounge access personally for me.

            • @PeeDee: Ummm, wow.

              • @Tony-Abbott: Unpopular opinion i know

                • +2

@PeeDee: Your comment doesn't even make sense re the pilots.

                  • +1

@Tony-Abbott: Didn't you read? They hit the accelerator so fast!

Obviously what happened here is that they were granny shifting, not double-clutching like you should.

            • @PeeDee: No comment on the pilots bit, but in terms of Qantas store discounts you sometimes find things 40-50% off for specific sale, maybe even more. They've always got stuff on sale and they regularly cycle different things through, and then occasionally they have a flash sale like this where everything is reduced.

Round the world itinerary on Business Class.

    • +1

People often say flights are much better than store purchases…I'm gonna check if it's otherwise this time.

    • Best to donate it to someone who can use it. 😂

    • +1

You would get better value with upgrades, or flights, BUT…
If you can get flights way cheaper thru another airline that you're happy with, it's silly to say you are getting the value of the Qantas flight, because you are not going to buy that flight, and certainly not at full cost.
So, the value of using points for flights is not what Qantas would charge, it's what you'd pay.
Therefore, gift cards at the moment may well be the best you will get in terms of value.

I have lots of Qantas points, and have never found value booking a flight. The value of a qff point is rarely, if ever, over 1c/pt. Gift cards with this deal are 0.7c/pt roughly.
Hope that helps you avoid false thinking about value versus price.

    • I've found domestic classic rewards flights reasonably available and better value than the shop/gift cards. Never managed to find an overseas reward flight that was suitable.
I think short regional flights can be good value too, as tickets are often expensive but the distance is short and the rewards basically work on distance.
