I hate how expensive this is here. My last trip to Japan I don't think I spent much time sober because of these….

    • How much were they in Japan?

      • +22

About $2 a can and they were 9% instead of 6%

        • +6

          And they were 500ml

        • +3

two of those for pre drinks and you're hammeredddddd

          • +1

@Duplicity: Used to skull one, in one go to start the night of food and drinks was so good. Rough hangover though am I right

            • +2

@Gravehaunted: These never gave me a rough hangover. But if the powder is there you just ignore the pain anyway!

              • @Mr BoMBAStiG: I thought you meant 'powder' as in Columbian marching powder for a sec there…

        • Strong Zero Dry is 9%, regular strong zero is 6%. Even regular strong zero is still three standard drinks per 500 mL tube.

    • +2

Yep, nice enough drink but way overpriced here

      • +8

Compared to other 4 pack premixes it's fairly competitive at $15, but at $20 not so much. Plus it contains way less sugar. But yeah blame the alcopop tax.

    • +6

One of the most exciting things about going to Japan is my first purchase at the airport Family Mart - A big can of Strong, a small bottle of Suntory Whisky (probably Hakushu), a melon pan, and a pack of mints.

      • More like mini Suntory Kaku

        • Those are OK if I want to mix, but if I'm drinking straight, I'd go for the more either the (Suntory) Yamazaki or Hakushu for a bit of hoity toity snoots.

      • +1

        Are you me

        • Peak excitement is landing day. Then my first dinner in Japan is also memorable and excellent, as long as it's not an international chain like McDonald's etc. I feel like a little kid when their parents allow them to choose anything they want from the lolly section.

      • I always get the 2L bottle of Suntory Red Whisky, goes well with 2250mL alcohol exemption when you get to Aus.

        • Those bottles are hilarious. They look like oil!

      • +2

I only smoke on holidays as a treat and Kool Hokkaido mint cigarettes almost made it a pack-a-day habit for me. I would be in trouble if anything similar were available here.

    • Our alcohol import tax pretty much makes that an impossibility.

      • They're made in Australia

        • It's still taxed even though it's made domestically is my understanding

    • I agree. I remember paying 180 yen (about $2) for the 9% version of this at a local convenience store.

    • +2

Yeah, the vending machines were great… and they were 9%!

      None of this 6% rubbish

    • +1

They turned me into an alcoholic. A can in the morning with a Strawberry Sando for breakfast and one at the end of the day in the onsen.

      • No coffee in a can for breakfast!?

    • +2

IWell you start your morning in Japan with a can of something in nearest combini shop and then who knows where you end up… Missing those days

      • +1

Exactly this! Can't wait to get back there someday.

  • +11

Wish they'd offer more flavours soon, drinking so much lemon becomes bleh after awhile.

Give me grape, peach and apple Suntory!

    • The next one is supposed to be grape, but given the trouble they've had keeping up with this its probably delayed.

If you look around you can find the imported ones: ume, peach, grape, apple, cider sour, bitter lemon and lemon/lime looking one.

  • Just ordered some
    Thanks!

  • +1

    Same price in store too.

  • +3

Just a reminder that these are made in Australia and as said already; down on alcohol %.

    • +7

      They’re still pretty tasty.
On a side note liquorland also stock Yebisu beer which is fully imported and very delicious.

      • +2

Ooh, I've wanted to try Yebisu for a while now. If the local ones get it in I'll finally get a chance to try it. Thanks for the heads-up!

        • you might have to order for delivery like i did today. cashback made it slightly more affordable

  • +2

Need more flavours lemon is getting boring taste

  • +1

I ordered this today and they had 10 pack for $45, and an extra 30% cashback. This is also good!!

    • -2

Did they actually have the 10pk?

      • +4

Well yeh, as mentioned, I ordered it?

        • Yeah but sometimes they allow you to order, but then later cancel due to no stock.

Our local stores (FCL & LL) haven't had any since January, reckon they can't get them in as BQ hasn't been able to source stock. Hence why I asked. But good to know there is stock back, I'll see if they can get them in.

          • @M00Cow: It was delivered at 9am this morning. Efficient

  • +4

    More intensity!

    • yup… need 9%

Nice price for a pack of 4, still cheaper if buying a carton

  • Dang, this would have been nice to stack with the Cashrewards 30% cashback from this afternoon! Would have added a pack to my order had I known! Might still get some anyway :)

    • Wait for SB, won’t be surprised if they have a big upsized cashback sometime this week.

      • Their 40% was Saturday….

        • +1

That was BWS. Been a while now since the last 30% at Liquorland. Their second birthday weekend deals coming up.

Uncle Dan now $14.95 4pk for members

    • +1

      ^
Now with free delivery expired, buy with Dan's 5% off gift cards makes it tad better.

  • For the ones in the know, would this be comparable or better than Tanduay Ice?

    • Thanks OP. Ordered and collected. Guess be answering my own query soon enough. 🤞

    • Ive drunk Tanduay neat and Ive drunk Strong Zero. No idea what Tanduay ice is. Its basically a vodka cruiser. It has a special place in the heart of gaijins in Japan because its cold, widely available, cheap, one can gets you half cut, whats not to like.

      • Tanduay Ice is also basically a Vodka Cruiser. Trying the -196 now. I prefer the Ice more since it has more of the citrus flavour (more soury) which I like better while the former has more of a very bland taste. AFAIK the Ice can't be bought here which is a bummer and it'd be a big hit amongst the hip crowd for sure if it is made available.

At least Red Horse is available from a select few.

  • +5

I had a can of Strong (zero?) before going for a walk one night in Tokyo. I was surprised by how hard it hit me. No wonder you see so many drunk salarymen walking around!

These are like 99y from a supermarket or 180y from convenience store. 9% alcohol and tastes like soft drink.

    • first thing i plan on doing when I eventually go back there will be to hunt down the real stuff

      • +1

There's a wholesaler selling in Melbourne, so very likely there would be one in Sydney as well. I've been selling them for around 6 months!

Have a look at some independant liquor stores and you may come across them!

        • oh wow, I'll do some searching!

    • +2

At my wedding my mum drank one can and started telling everyone what she thought about them. Then she said, these get you schnookered.

  • -5

always makes me laugh to see teens walking around the city with slabs of this on their shoulder

  • love these, time to stock up more :)

  • remember when males wouldn't be seen drinking stuff like this? What changed that stigma?

      • ha ha. When I was younger i was more a cider/udl guy, now I'm a beer guy, but i remember when i felt stigma drinking stuff like this, still do when i feel like something from that side of the bottolo

  • +1

Beware, shochu can give you a nasty headache. Not sure what it is about it but seems to be commonly known as being a bit of a dirty alcohol.

  • +1

I just bought 2x 4 packs chilled and will drink them now
