  • good price! thanks for sharing

  • This or Tplink tapo?

  • and yet another different app required to control one of their devices…

    • There's really only two apps. The older cameras use Xiaomi's Mi Home app for connectivity and now all the new and future cameras are going on their own IMILAB app so they can offer their own cloud based storage.

Bummer :(, not gonna get cos I have smoke alarm, door sensors , gateway all within the Mi Home app. Otherwise I would get

    • You wouldn't want to use their apps anyway.. crap like this you are better off blocking its internet connection and viewing it on your own system like ZoneMinder/blue iris. 30 bucks for a 1080p camera, theres gonna be some data collection at the least

    How long before you get

This camera can only be used in China

Like their Yi Camera. Sure you can flash it a Russian hacked firmware….. But what could possibly go wrong? I'm not worried about them view footage, which they can, but using it as a backdoor into my network. And also lack of security updates

    • Yi Camera? Yi Technology is a different brand to Xiaomi and IMILAB. Xiaomi Australia / Panmi distribute IMILAB here and the same AliExpress store sells the AU versions of these cameras so there's no way they're going to be blocked in Australia when they're a region officially supported by the company :)

      • Yep the ones I bought were originally for use in globally including Australia. Then they were suddenly disabled. Once bitten twice shy. There is no way you can honestly say it won't happen again.

It's just a heads up/consideration to other potential buyers.

I'd definitely be concerned about the potential for the Chinese government using the camera as a backdoor. The question then becomes "How interesting are you to the Chinese government?"

Note that I share the same concern about every electronic device. The difference with totalitarian governments (e.g. Chinese, Russian, etc.) is that the cost of upsetting the authorities is almost certainly jail.

      • I'm not worried about them looking at the video. My video's, even of kids aren't interesting. But I am concerned about it being backdoored.for getting into my.network..maybe snooping on me, maybe launching an attack on others. Xiaomi doesn't care about their privacy reputation. Apple, Google, Amazon do.

        • I disagree that Xiaomi don't care about their reputation.

  • Tuya cameras have similar rating to Xiaomi too and cost around $22. Not a bad price if you take 20% cashback and makes it around $18

Why do people put these chinese spyware in their houses. That's the reason why they are so cheap.

    • +1

Can you prove this specific camera is spyware?

      • +3

Not this specific camera but I'd say it's safe to assume after testing a few xiaomi devices a while ago such as phones and other webcams with wireshark (i think at one stage on a webcam i saw a long list of attempts to access my router login page, presumably trying common passwords even though cloud storage was disabled and recordings were being saved locally to sdcard) They also seem to lack some proper security and have to rely on the company to push updates as not many I've seen support flashing custom firmware.

        • Which cameras specifically were they? Remembering that Xiaomi, IMILAB, Xiaofang and Yi to name a few are all different companies and brands.

          • @Clear: They're all linked to Xiaomi.
No different to dodgey shelf companies.

At least western companies can fight government demands in court where is in China the government demands, companies must comply and of story.

Nothing against the Chinese people they are awesome and we love them. But like our government is dodgy (hello federal parliament prayer room) they're government are dodge too.

            • @M00Cow: Not all of them are linked to Xiaomi. Some are in the Mijia ecosystem (e.g. Mi Home app), while others are simply sold in Xiaomi stores.

        • +3

You had wireshark running, the device was hitting your router; you presume it was trying to log in using common passwords; yet you didn't bother to actually check one of those sets of packets to check for authentication attempts?

        • +2

They also seem to lack some proper security

Could you please be a bit more specific about the security issues?

          • @djbst: Well the lack of updates for starters.

The fact they don't operate without phoning home to China sure you can get some unofficial firmware updates to stop this, but do you actually.trust some random person on the internet to provide these updates? I don't.

            • +2

@M00Cow: Was it connecting to a random hostname or a hostname that contains the vendor domain?

Could you also please share the make and model of the webcam please?

              • @djbst: Xiaomi yi camera

                • @M00Cow: Thanks.

So it was connecting to a host name that has the vendors domain name?

It's just that you were uncomfortable that the host name resolved to an ip address in China?

        • "webcams with wireshark (i think at one stage on a webcam i saw a long list of attempts to access my router login page, presumably trying common passwords"

Trying to access your router login page or just talking to the network gateway which is normal?

          • @madrigal: Did you see it accessing the login page or just the routers IP address?

And you are certain that it's not UPNP?

Could you also please share the make and model of the webcam you tested?

        • +1

Would love to see the pcap of your allegation.

You would think that if you did see that more people would be aware or would want to know. Or hell, send me that camera and I'll have a look.

Regarding the security on the camera. "Welcome to IoT - where the S stands for security".
This isn't limited to this product. The vast majority of the market uses cheap whitelabelled goods which is how there are so many custom firmware exploits.

Not saying that to justify, but to call out one single product is naive.
Customers need to demand better or regulation needs to step in. Both options make the product more expensive.

    • Haters gonna hate

      • No, security conscious are going to question.

Easy to dismiss questioning as haters. But it's harder to actually address the concerns.
        Misdirection, it's what Putin does.

        • -1

Keep crying. Go ahead and buy your Australian made cameras.

          • @Kongzi: Yep, misdirection. Keep going.

  • As a warning
    My imilab cameras
For some reason on iPhone I cannot stream videos on Telstra cellular. Wifi is fine. VPN is fine. Optus/Telstra also no problem.
Not sure what the hell is going on…

  • Does this support RTSP feed or RTMP feed? Is there a open source firmware I can use on this?

  • It's showing $50 for me including tax for the camera and card. Has the deal ended?

    • Yes it would appear so.
