  • Is this a Month to month or 12 months contract?

    Can cancel anytime?

Thinking of doing this until a good $500 jbhifi GC comes around 👍

    • +2

Usually it’s m2m, the discount only valid for 12 months, can cancel anytime

      • so we can activate for 2 months pay $22.5 and then can cancel?

        • Yes

        • It's month to month plan cancel anytime the 12 months means offer of 50% off only for 12 months not 12 months contract 👍😁

        • Pay $45 ?

  • Hi guys. I am already with optus in the 365 day pre paid plan. What's the cheapest way for me to post out and port back in for this deal. It's good for me because I pay for optus sport separately. Also how long do I need to be ported out for?

  • +1

ANy chance they'd kill your account if they realise your billing address isnt WA?

    • +1

They might just cancel the discount?

      • Yeah, gd pt, will leave alone

        • I just paid for another month on my current service but I reckon I will jump on this offer near end of month.

    • I just gave it a shot to see what happens.

I got a confirmation of order, but it does say that someone will contact you within 48 hours if they require more information.

      • @ballofspam Can you let us know how your order go? Did you get the deal at the end?

        • +2

They did ask me to contact them to confirm my residential address was in WA. Maybe I was being paranoid but they knew judging by the tone in the voicemail. Never called them back

  • Nice! Anyone knows if this has 5G?

    • +1

it says 5g network access if you follow the link, so i guess it does

      • +1

        Thanks matey!

        • Yes for sure 5G included,.. only there very low cost plans only have 4G but even looks like theve changed that on there current list of only sim postpaid plans now they all seem to be 5G capable even the lowest $45 20gb Small Choice Plus Plan (there not really cheap anyway, unless you get a discount deal with them)
          https://www.optus.com.au/mobile/plans/shop

Edit: Guessing a lot of grand fathered older plans might still be stuck on 4G, try your luck anyone with these older plans and get onto Optus online chat and nag them to activate 5G on your plan and threaten them with going to another telco provider

  • I signed up using a wa postcode but all it wanted was my email and phone number. Guess I'll see what happens

    • That's using esim I guess?

      • Nah physical Sim.

        • Ah ok. I did a dummy order and had to put in address, email and phone number.

        • what state is the sim being delivered to?

      • I'm sure you can use e-sim it's a postpaid plan, give Optus a call or chat and your enquiring for parents who live in WA

        • Or try teling them you are travelling today, can you get a $2 sim at a store and use that. Let us know

    • Did you end up signing up?

      • Ended up doing esim and it worked instant

  • Its still not as good as prepaid hopping though.

    • Too bad there are no good deals for 5G on prepaid.

      • Vodafone has 5G prepaid. 5G coverage is still in its infancy and not many devices support the nano metre wave. Not much of it issue yet.

        • From memory, I think telstra, optus and voda use micro-wave bands, not nano-wave bands. So it doesn't matter if you phone supports nano-wave band or not.

5G bands (I also checked on a website, could be wrong tho)

          3500MHz (n78) – Telstra (from May 2019)

          3500MHz (n78) – Optus (from October 2019)

          3500MHz (n78) – Vodafone (from March 2020)

          2300MHZ (n40) – Optus (from June 2020)

          700MHz (n28) – Vodafone (from November 2020)

          850MHz (n5) – Telstra (from April 2020)

          • @AdamJ9: Sorry, I've mistaken, the fastest form of 5G at the moment is the millimetre wave (mmWave).

Telstra currently uses the 3.6Ghz spectrum for this, but can go up to 26Ghz (live trials have started). The frequency needs to go up, 5G is shorter range, but much much faster speeds, but less penetration into buildings, that's what the 850Mhz band is for.

The coverage of mmWave is not great from any carrier at the moment, and 4G is fast enough for our current needs, video conferencing, streaming etc. Once 4k video because more mainstream, eg 4k on our phones, not that it would be useful because the pixels will be so dense can't even make out the difference, but manufacturers will start doing it anyways.

  • Nice and bumped

  • Bit wary of optus sim cards being hacked

  • +3

I signed for a 5G - 200 GB($65) plan for $32.50 at Melbourne central Store as wanted it instant and the online team also offered the same. 12 months discount and got eSim( physical sim also available). Was paying $65 for 5G- 80Gb and $10 for unlimited international calls with Telstra.
found it to be better valued than Vodafone too.

    • That’s a very good deal for now.

  • Anything similar on Telstra.

    • Went to the Telstra store they were no promotions. Check online lol. the only thing you can do is get Boost prepaid - w only way to access 100 % of the Telstra network.

      • +1

Have contacted Telstra, they said will get back to me with discounted offer to match this one.

        • They will give BS that their network is far superior etc .. so pay them whatever they ask. Paying the premium and suck it up is all I got over the last 5 years of being with them.

        • Telstra day this Thursday they might surprise us with great deals lol

          • @Italkdigital: get Iphone12 at $300 discount and Samsung with a $500 discount. No luck with Cheap plans. :(

            • @Vinns:

              Iphone12 at $300 discount and Samsung with a $500

Are they upcoming deals with this upcoming Telstra day?

        • I would be surprised if Telstra can match the Optus deal tbh, since Telstra has the biggest market share in Australia

  • Remember the good old days when roaming, with about 4 GB of data, used to be included in some Optus plans?

  • 1.5Mbps after limit reached?
    That's going to be a challenging wank…

    • I have a data sim with 5gb 1.5Mbps is fine for home internet

      • +1

ACCC boss warns telcos against 1.5Mbps 'unlimited' services

Optus was previously fined in 2010 for offering “unlimited” broadband that introduced a crippling speed cap after users reached a specific data allowance.

        • Funny this is my limited caped speeds of 1.5Mbps with a Optus 5GB data plan (@ $7.50 half price special for 12 months), 3.21Mbps download and 16Mbps upload speeds which is perfect for me with streaming services like Prime Video/catchup TV working fine and surely seems fine for web browsing
          https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/8277218945

I think telcos were fined more so using the term "unlimited" with these type of plans,. Optus/Vodafone now calls these type of plans as "endless" data

Interesting write up about it here (Penalty – Telcos to face fines for misleading advertising)

          https://whatphone.com.au/guide/there%27s-no-such-thing-as-an…

Well this Optus data plan suits me very well, includes Optus sports free, I have 12 months of Amazon Prime for 12 months free (Through Optus subhub) that costs $6.99 per month usually and importantly I don't need to pay for NBN at home, anyway everyone's situation is different as I'm single the only person using this service and it keeps my Fetch Mighty TV boxes happy we're they need an internet connection to just to function

Also this is way better then these plans stopping with no data at all (like prepaid data) and worse getting charged $10 per GB going overs ones allocated data, these options are still available but who would take these options over endless data

As a data plan there is no worry about loosing the phone number attached to simcard, Optus keeps offering half price specials on there data plans so before 12 months is up I just start another data plan on half price special and end the previous one, I can't complain at all only paying $7.50 per months for an internet connection that does the job for my needs

I'm using the service now as I'm typing 😁

          • @Italkdigital: My point was that the ACC had deemed 1.5Mbps speeds as essentially useless for most users.

What you are saying is that 1.5Mbps is fine because you are actually getting 3Mbps.

Yes, 3Mbps is fine. In fact even 2Mbps would work for video streaming.
However, I would say that you are the exception in getting speeds above 3Mbps, not the norm. I suspect that other users are not getting the same results. Happy to hear from other end users to their experience.

Optus is stating they are throttling to 1.5Mbps.
My parents were on the Vodafone unlimited plan previously, which throttled to 2Mbps, but they are now throttled to 1.5Mbps and it is essentially unusable for anything beyond browsing. The change suggests that the Telcos are aware that 1.5 is the tipping point.

Again, this is just my personal opinion. Compared to the internet speeds I grew up with (i.e. 0Mbps) its luxury.

            • @Tiggrrrrr: Mines usuable and a previous same Optus data plan capped at proper 1.5Mbps was also usable for my case uses, I guess depends what one might be using it for well this capped speed wouldn't work for family with 2 or more family members which would be the most case scenario which why it was deemed by the ACC as useless and the fact that the telcos were calling these plans unlimited plans which they certainly aren't a true unlimited plans, so certainly false advertising

Don't certainly prefer back to how it was before were for every 1gb one goes over there allocated data plan and you'd end up paying $10 extra per gb over, once by accident I got charged lots of money for going over few gigabytes, so many stories of kids not knowing and got charged 1000s of dollars by Telstra

This is just my personal opinion and I hate subscriptions were possible i can avoid like paying $50 plus for the NBN

Optus half price 12 months data deal now at $7.50 is a bonus for me, 5gb endless data which usually costs $15 it actually helps me not to use my banked data with my Belong mobile plan, so many bonuses using these type of endless plans, well there mobile can take anywhere so not fixed at home like the NBN (the 4G sims can be placed in an old phone and wifi hot spotted), actually a family of 3x can actually have there own endless data plan each which still works out cheaper then the nbn, actually had one 4G data sim in my Note 9 512gb downloadong endless torrents, also again keeps my 3x Fetch Boxes active, anyway my 2 cents 😀

  • +1

If you’re porting in, do you need a physical SIM? I chose eSIM but the activation isn’t working. Was told by Optus that porting requires a physical SIM..?

    • When this deal was on a few months back I signed up online straight on to an eSIM. I did do it via Optus chat though because there was some issue with my birthdate. I did mention several times in the chat I wanted an eSIM, I am legit in WA I just wanted it because I didn't want to take a trip to the shops. Everything is working great. Even 5G which I don't really care about is nice to see and active a lot more then I thought it would be.

  • Just worked for NSW (Sydney) - went through the process twice, first sales rep said i was ineligible so i hung up waited a few days for them to get depserate then the next one put it all through with no questions

    • Did you end up getting the offer?

      • I have an invoice in my name with the deal - no sim card has arrived yet.

        • Did you just say you were NSW but wanted them to match the WA offer?
