  • I have a 100 year old whiskey at home what do you think that worth? never been opened.

    • Trolling?

      • no I actually do I have wanting to know how much its worth for a long time. 1922 was the year so its pretty much almost 100 years old.

        • +6

whiskey doesn't continue to age once bottled.

          • @Bargain Slut: ok so should I be opening it then? and will it taste the same as it does a 2022 bottle?

            • @kungfuman: Give us a bit more details. What's the bottle say?

              • @thestig: unopened bottle of Seagrams V.O. Rare Old Canadian Whiskey. it says the tax stamp is 1922 (damaged but metal ring seal is fully intact) Aged for 13 years in charred oak casks.

                • @kungfuman: better to keep it imo, but if you decide to open it, it will taste better

I've had a henny cognac which my uncle got for his wedding gift 40 years ago and taste soo good

                • @kungfuman: It's not a particularly collectable brand, maybe a few hundred but I wouldn't think more than the sentimental value. If it was a collectable brand like Macallan, Glendronach, Highland Park, Glenfarclas or Japanese Whisky you could probably retire lol. Display it on a shelf as a sentimental item.

                • @kungfuman: Was the link posted below you?

            • @kungfuman: Distillery's change things every so often so I doubt it'll be exactly the same, a 20 year old Johnny walker red supposedly had better taste in general than the modern bottles.
But value all depends on what it actually is, will have to share more details.

            • @kungfuman: To be honest, it's impossible to know until you open and taste it. Depending on the integrity of the bottle seal, substantial amount of the content should have been evaporated. Maybe give it a shake to feel how much is left inside. The taste will surely change. I would not open it personally as i am sure the enjoyment of tasting the bottle would not exceed the future enjoyment value of owning a whiskey that old.

              • @williamk30:

it's impossible to know until you open and taste it.

Surely that invalidates the purpose of getting it valued in the first place.

I wonder if some testing labs offer services for collectibles like this - spectrometry or similar should give some indicators of what's inside.

      This you?

      https://www.drinksplanet.com/whats-the-value-of-unopened-bot…

Was curious and did a google search for you and this is what came up..

      • Good detective work..

Was just trying to help the OP but seems he's already asked the question elsewhere and got an answer from someone who seems to know what they're talking about.

BTW OP - not much whiskey left in that bottle, might as well just drink it I reckon !

          • @werdplaya58: Interesting - if that Drinks Planet post is him, then he asked that question 3 years ago.

OP - you can email a number of online whisky auctioneers and they will give you a rough price range for free.

      • LOL

  • Always disappointed when I click the deal and go to buy without noticing its from boozebud who don't deliver to regional vic.

  • Got the Glenmorangie 18, thanks :)

A'bunadh is like 60% ABV, is it meant to be drunk neat

    • +2

You're meant to add drops of water to your taste.. some drink it neat.
60% far too burny for me.

    • +4

Once you taste A'bundah you will be spoiled forever. Add a drop a water and savour the lovely taste.

    • A'bunadh is my favourite. The alcohol % varies depending on the batch and each batches have slightly different taste profiles.
I personally start drinking it neat and then add a few drops of water to experience the flavours burried within.
I remember buying it around $100, it's not come down since then.

worth waiting for this deal - BWS: 40% Cashback (Capped $40) @ ShopBack (Saturday 2/4 1-5pm AEDT)

    The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak - $135 - $40 = $95
    Lagavulin 16 Year Old - $143 - $40 = $103
    12 Year Old Double Cask - $102 - $40 = $62

    etc etc

    • +3

If it gets tracked by SB. It's like playing the lottery, really.

      • Everything I get through SB tracks perfectly, definitely use the app.

  • I’m a big fan of the Aberlour 12yo, I like the fact that it is slightly on the sweeter side with richer flavours. I find the a’bunadh is too strong for me.
Are the Glendronach 12 or Macallan 12 sherry oak similar to the Aberlour 12yo? Should I give them a try?

    • +2

Its the opposite for me. After tasting A'bundah, Aberlour 12 yo taste bland to me.

    • +1

I prefer the glendro to the other 2.

    • +1

I would rank those three in the following order : A12, GD12, MAC12.

The mouthfeel and relative balance vs complexity of the A12 is just ahead of the GD12.

MAC12 is alright - but not worth that price. It is thin and not very interesting.

  • Thanks, made some good use of this as with my current ebay coupon the prices were unbeatable.

  • Grabbed a bottle of each of the Aberlours thanks. Might grab more A12 in the BWS deal if the ShopBack rep is around to guarantee cashback
