  • Damn, I would buy this if I hadn't already read it.

No harm in having more of this great book

      • +3

I know I would love it, as I’m a bit of a book collector. But I’m trying to stick to the rule of only buying books I haven’t read. No space on bookshelves.

        • +1

          But its my biography!

You can never read it too many times.😁

Price matching Booktopia $58.25 FYI. Booktopia have 10% off with BTPBAUPTO10, but no free shipping there. Amazon will probably work out cheaper still.

    Edit, yes:

    Subtotal $58.25 $52.43
    Shipping $7.95
    Total $60.38

      Support booktopia, aussie business.

        • +33

Has to do better? Amazon only lowered their price to MATCH theirs. This is their strategy to put local companies out of business, then there will be no reason for them to ever lower their prices.

            • +24

@[Deactivated]: Because Amazon has adopted a uber style minimum wage delivery network to take advantage of unskilled and/or disadvantaged people. It's a trillion dollar global conglomerate. They serve the shareholder, not you.

              • +2

@2pro4sho: Exactly. They provide drivers about $100 for 4 hours work, and the drivers have to cover all expenses. They end up with about $12 to $15 per hour… with no benefits. It's disgusting

              • -5

@2pro4sho: What a naïve guy! Aussie business serves their shareholders too. This is capitalism. Amazon and Booktopia are both evils, the difference is Amazon is a more competitive and offers better and cheaper services. It is all I care about.

                • +4

@[Deactivated]: That's stupid and short-sighted. Amazon's only dropping the price to undercut the competition. As market leader, they can afford to discount and sell at, or below, cost in a way their smaller competitors can't. Once they've achieved enough market share, they can jack up prices whenever they want. It's the definition of monopolistic behaviour and your shopping is rewarding it.

                  • @SydStrand: To be fair, Amazon's competitive prices, cheap(free) delivery, and fast delivery times encourage spending, which stimulates the economy, creating jobs. Maybe Amazon's delivery network is underpaid, but the drivers obviously need the work. Without Amazon, what do they do? Is there another job just waiting for them? By buying from Amazon, you are also supporting the manufacturers who made and designed the products. And some local businesses sell through Amazon too. The reality is that enterprises are more efficient on a large scale. In the end, it is better for everyone, because large scale systems have the manpower and economic power to adapt, transform, and even be more environmentally friendly if they choose to.

                  • @SydStrand: You don't understand economics at all, man! When Amazon jack up the prices, new competitors will enter the market. As consumers, it is really not your business, just buy whatever cheaper and better.

                    • +2

Just like when Masters went out of business and all the new businesses jumped in to keep Bunnings competitive.

                      @[Deactivated]:

You're ignorant if you think this has ever happened. They will simply price match and undercut new entrants, and absorb the loss to maintain market share. You're an idiot with an oversimplified worldview of economics if you deny this. Just look at what happened in the Bunnings vs Mastere and independents saga.

                      • -2

@SydStrand: You exactly support my point that Aussie business can be as evil as Amazon. Bunnings is a perfect example of what Booktopia could be. Not to mention Harvey Norman. How naive you are!

                • @[Deactivated]: Spot On about serving the shareholder, everyone seeks maximum profits, Aussie or not, businesses have their ways and consumer have theirs. Any support is on principles and what one chose to believe.

            • +9

@[Deactivated]: As an author - I really, really wish shipping on books was better than it is. Costs me about $16 to send to send out autographed copies to many places within Australia, because of the thickness of the books. Obvs retailers can get better custom rates, but they're still brutal.

I wish I could absorb the costs to have free shipping, but Amazon's logistics are unmatchable.

Good story, but too much singing an poetry in the books.

    • +21

      Thanks for the review, tugman.

    • +3

Not a fan of the poetry either.
I just skip over them. Probably missing out on some great lore but I don’t find reading through them enjoyable

    • +1

      Lol.

Maybe you smoked too much weed before reading it?

There's no singing. It's not an audiobook

      • Tom Bombadil sings.

  • After buying a HP Lovecraft book last year, i'm still on page 20. But good deal.

    • -8

      Cool stpru

  • +1

Please excuse my ignorance but does this one book (to rule them all) contain all three books? Or do you get three books? Or are there two other books you need order to have the full collection?

    • +6

It's a single-volume illustrated edition with 1248 pages, so it'd be the whole LotR

  • +2

I am just reading these books to my daughter and love the idea of the deluxe hardcover, pictures and bigger maps (which are virtually unreadbale in a paperback format). Reading through some of the reviews, there were some printing issues, which the description says have now been "reset and corrected". A reviewer also says the paper is quite thin and the colour illustrations are printed on the same paper, instead of a thicker glossy format, which makes them look poor. You can see text on the rear of the paper through the picture. Other reviewers talk about lovely leather cover or fancy slipcase. Neither are part of this version, so the many high reviews seem to be for slightly different versions. I think this is version 2, fixed up but done cheaper.

    • I think the reviews are mixed with the deluxe edition, which is a more premium leather bound printing. That version had an original run of 5000, since sold out, and a second edition — which seems to have had some differences in quality.

This regular hardback is separate I think.

  • +1

This is the hardcover version, not the leather cover version, which sells above 130 kangaroos. The reviews for both versions are in the same bag, just like some Chinese products on Amazon. Hard to say if the quality is good, but it is Amazon. I got one since the illustrations from a friend version are really good and the book is interqctive, which is great for the kids.

    • any chance to link the one you've ended up getting please?

      • +1

The link from the deal. I'm not a diehard fan to pay 130+ for a non academic book

  • +3

Glad I held out all these years for my LOTR book. Getting this thanks OP.

  • -7

    Never read the books.

    Are they like the movies?

The first ten pages are the story, the rest is the ending of the return of the king?

    • +1

Spoiler Alert for the Return of the King Book

People complain about the ending of the movie being too long but the funny thing is that in the books there a was a whole section about Saruman taking over the Shire which happened after the deafest of Sauron. Imagine if they had kept that in the movies, lol

      • No thanks

      • +1

Would have been better than making the Hobbit a trilogy.
Saruman versus the shire, that would have been good as a sequel.

        • +1

Yeah hobbit could have been so much better if it wasn’t bloated into a trilogy. There was an edit which condensed the three movies into a single movie called the “cardinal cut”. Haven’t seen it yet but do want to watch it at some stage

      • There was no reason to put this in the thread. I read spoiler alert for return of the king.

        • Sorry! I did say book in the spoiler alert. I just thought it was ironic that people complain how long the ending of the movie is when they in fact cut out a large part of it.

    • +1

I have (unfortunately) never been a big reader. But I read "The Hobbit" during one weekend of guard duty way back in my Army days.
I loved the book but it "ruined" the movie(s) for me as they are so far from the actual book they should be called "based on" the Hobbit and not 'the Hobbit'.
My understanding is that this is somewhat similar in parts with the LOTR but not half as bad as the Hobbit (which should have been one movie and not a trilogy to start with).

    • The books are much better than the movies. Then again, reading the books would be more enjoyable if you didn’t already know the story. I’m so glad I read them before the movies came out,

For your information, it was written as a single book, but the publisher decided to split it into 3 books.

  • +1

I haven't actually read this so I picked it up.

  • +11

FYI for 2 bucks extra Booktopia is quite a bit better for shipping. Way less chance of it arriving with the corners all dinged up.

Although the the shipping does take a few more days.

  • -1

How many hobbits did he portray as P.O.C?

    • Just the Harfoots:

Before the crossing of the mountains the Hobbits had already become divided into three somewhat different breeds: Harfoots, Stoors, and Fallohides. The Harfoots were browner of skin, smaller, and shorter, and they were beardless and bootless; their hands and feet were neat and nimble; and they preferred highlands and hillsides. The Stoors were broader, heavier in build; their feet and hands were larger, and they preferred flat lands and riversides. The Fallohides were fairer of skin and also of hair, and they were taller and slimmer than the others; they were lovers of trees and of woodlands.

Wait, his name is Tolkien? I thought it was Token!

  • lol kindle version $45. wtf bezos
also this just recently jumped up 26c so increase in price is now a bargain ?

  • Would it be possible for some people who have received this to advise on the quality please - given some of the quality concerns mentioned ?

    • +7

Got mine a couple days ago

      • Overall presentation is good - pages are even, spine is sturdy; there is a cicrular window cut into the dust jacket over the eye of sauron that's printed into the actual hardcover which is a nice touch; there is a built-in ribbon marker which I wasn't aware of when purchasing
      • Pages are thin like a bible - I don't think it's cheap; evenly sized so no bulges along the edges
      • Black and red ink on all pages which is a nice touch
      • Pages with illustrations are the same thickness as for text but are on a whiter page. As such, some illustration pages are single-sided and blank on one side but not all; image quality is fine
      • There are two removable maps, folded up and just inside the covers. There is no internal envelope so these are just loose inside the book
      • There is no box or slipcase. It comes packaged in a discardable blue box with the Doors of Durin printed in white but this isn't part of the book's presentation and I will throw mine out.
      • Because of the blue box, my edition arrived in perfect new edition from Amazon. The box is there to protect the book.

Overall I think quality is very good. There are enough nice touches here and there to show they've gone beyond minimal effort. The way I would describe it as that it's a nicer collector's edition that you would actually want to read and wouldn't be too bothered if it got scuffed up. There are more premium editions available (Folio Society etc.) but this is still a nice piece to have on the shelf. My only other edition of LotR are single editions of all three books in paperback, so this feels like something I've wanted to have on my shelf for a while. If I spent >$100 on a very posh edition, I would feel reluctant to get my vegemite fingers all over it. For <$60 this is a nice purchase and I will read this edition when I do my next LotR read.

      • +1

Thanks for the great feedback. Was just out and popped into a bookshop - but it was shrink-wrapped. Nearly $90. Am pulling the trigger on it now. Been at this price a long time but you never know. Hobbit illustrated deal has just gone up - snagged one of those too - and the graphic novel. Its been a big JRRT fest couple of days. Now I hope that me, my kids or my wife actually read them! LOL.
