[PC, Steam] Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition $9.18 @ Humble Bundle

1180

I recently had some nostalgic thoughts and have been spending many hours on YouTube watching videos on this legendary game. It's amazing that there is still a community that is thriving on a game that was first released over 20 years ago. I've tried AoE III and checked out the recently released AoE IV gameplays and they just don't compare…

Saw that it was on sale at Humble Bundle and I can't wait to get back into it. Come join me on memory lane!

Otherwise $22.95AUD direct from Steam. Suitable for those who don't have or want Xbox Game Pass which it comes included with.

Bought it at full price - and was reminded how trash I am at this format of games. No regrets, great game.

    • +5

Not gonna lie I'm pretty terrified about going into my first ranked game. Low elo legend forever…

      • +1

        Bum rush militia

      • You're probably going to get rolled in your first 10 or so games but that's fine, just let the matchmaking figure out your elo level and you'll play against very similarly skilled players. It's a lot of fun learning new strats and civs as you climb the elo ladder.

    • there are ppl that have been playing for 20 years lol

    • +2

I bought it when it was first released on cd rom in a big box game at full Retail price.

      • only 90's kids will remember ;) ;)

        • 80s teens and 70s adults as well. 90s kids wouldn't be old enough to remember lol

          • +2

@kungfuman: Nope 90s kid, don't remember it coming out but bought it after I got age of empires 1 in a box of nutrigrain.

I am playing this since 2006 and still love playing it…there is client name Voobly to play multiplayer games.

    • Is there an easy way to starting to ‘git gud’ at this game or is it all just memorising build orders and having solid apm and decisive macro/micro?

      • +5

There's the typical counter unit triangle/rock,paper,sissors with archers, horses, melee. Then you need to ensure you have the correct siege. Though maps with large bits water make for more interesting games. Knowing when and what to upgrade, and age up are also important. As is keeping your villagers safe and busy on the correct resources to ensure your economy thrives.

Memorising build order and having solid apm and decisive macro/micro are certainly helpful and are part of puzzle to be successful, but if your rival has scouted you out and produced the counter to your units, prepare to be slaughtered.

      • +11

I think the biggest lesson I learned is; don't worry about losing games. In fact, you'll likely lose your first 10 or more games on the ranked ladder until you've been positioned correctly. Then you'll play against people at a similar skill level to yourself and gradually improve, while having competitive and possibly more enjoyable games.

Outside of that, there's a good guide from a player called "Hera" which outlines how to start getting better at the game. It's called Ultimate Guide to 2k (Definitive Edition). Obviously start at the beginning, and try the suggested strategies.

        • +2

if you are starting out the fastest way to learn is watch people that are better. losing is the easiest but slowest way to learn

        • How long on average per match?

          • @ow: It'll depend on the map and elo, but the most common map is Arabia which is fairly open and matches usually are quicker on there and last anywhere from 20-40 minutes. Other popular map is arena which takes longer due to both sides starting walled in.

      • +4

I wouldn't recommend Hera as others have stated, he's a good player but not a good teacher.

You'll need at least something resembling a build order if you want to actually be good (not necessary to have fun) but it's not like you have to sit down and ROTE learn one

      • +3

So many aspects to this game. You need to at least be able to master the basics, I.e. Build order, how to scout (use flagging), how to hunt boar, how to use shotcuts (to get high apm), and know your troops strength/weaknesses without having to open the encyclopedia.

Then there are tactics such as tower rush, eco boom, cav archer skirmish, knight rush, etc.

You also need to know about game to game situation, for example, how to support a weak side (in black Forest), how to fast rebuild after getting smashed, to use your civ special unit, etc. Knowing your civ is important especially in random civ games.

I think that's the basics you need to master to become decent in this game. There's a lot of videos to learn on YouTube. Having said that, nothing beats experience and good mentor. So keep playing and ask around.

AoE2 DE already includes full online multiplayer, ranked and unranked lobbies etc. As far as I know, most multiplayer (and pros/tournaments) moved away from Voobly since Definitive Edition.

      • Not sure if AoE2 DE has CBA and CBA hero like games in multiplayer option as I have never tried playing multiplayer from that option. I have been playing through voobly only. Can you check if they have CBA / CBA hero options? Thanks

        • +1

There's definitely CBA. Many of the old custom scenarios (CBA, RPG, TD etc.) have been ported over to DE.

        • There's CBA 24/7, with less lag than Voobly vs all the internationals on p2p

Great game, I'm still playing every day and night!

Can do team game if anyone is keen!

    • +1

Your PMs aren't enabled, wanted to PM you on playing together

I have some friends playing but they live elsewhere in the world so its difficult to tie up times to play

      • Just enabled, FYI I ain't good even though I play a lot 11

  • I bought it on sale for about the same price about 6 months ago. Cannot complain many hours of fun, though I haven't played it in the last couple of months. I'm not that great at it but I still had fun. At this price, worth it, though for such an old game, even though its improved, I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it.

    • +3

I disagree that it's so old. There's been a lot of changes for the definitive edition!

      • +2

Agreed. DE has loads of new campaigns, new civs, gameplay rebalancing and improvements. Even for the regular price I feel it's worth the money. For $10, a no brainer.

        • Oh for $10 it is a no brainer. We can argue if it's old or not but what does it matter, its great either way.

  • +4

    Pretty good game, I guess.

  • +3

Pure improvement over the original back in the day. Community is somehow getting bigger all the time on this game. Definitely worth a buy if you've ever enjoyed RTS games.

  • A dumb question, Can we play this in Xbox?

    • unless you can use a mouse no, good news is this game will run on a potato

      • You can play with a controller search "dave aoe controller" controller on youtube. Not sure if you can play on an xbox or if it needs to be a PC though. I assume steam can't be played on xbox?

    • +2

No native Xbox version, no. Would be interesting but it’d need to work well with a controller. Then again, Starcraft was released on N64.

    • +1

No, it's sold on the Xbox store for Windows only.

    • +1

unless there is mouse and keyboard support for the game, on Xbox you won't be able to play it. because it doesnt' work with controller is a PC ONLY GAME.

    Great game! 11

    Monk, I need a monk!

    I like this game

    • I like

  • i just did some searching, there is expansion after this version. I thought definitive edition is always the last sum up version isn't it? apparently this is not the case.

    • There's been 2 expansions since the game released. Both include 2 new civilizations and campaigns. You don't need the expansions to play, it just means you'll miss out on being able to use those 4 civs and a few campaigns (which in the scheme of things isn't a lot).

    • There are expansions that released after Definitive Edition because the relaunch has been so successful. Other games' definitive editions are more like end of life/support editions in my experience

  • Been playing this for so long. is AOE4 any good? the review and trailer looks good. has anyone played?

  • I'm loving how that all the games I played in my childhood and teenage years are coming back.

Marco Polo is a great hack.

    Also, thanks Google?

Alfred the Alpaca - alpaca simulator
    Flying Dog - woof woof
Little Monkey - furious the monkey boy
Useless villager - i love the monkey head - source

  • I have the HD Edition from a previous deal, but the code is still un-used. :D

Are they much the same? Still worth getting the Definitive?

    • +1

At this price it is worth getting the Definitive. I played the HD version for years, and the newer version is certainly better but not amazingly better, I waited for a sale like this one to 'upgrade',

More civs, better AI options, slightly better graphics and other small improvements.

    • Only just activated a previously bought HD Edition from years ago, surprisingly still works, thought it might have expired.

    • +1

DE is better than HD in almost every way, whether it's worth the upgrade depends on you though, for me it is.

    • HD was an awful game that needed community patches to be properly playable. DE is better in every aspect.

I mean just for starters HD is peer to peer and DE has its own servers

      • Yeah that's a good point, I never played multiplayer so thus didn't notice that.

  • +2

wish they would make this on Mac

  • +2

    wululu

    • Shhh ha

  • Cry if you like this every time

  • Great game, way better than the HD edition from 2013.
If they had it in a bundle with both of the addons it would be great.

  • +2

Been playing it almost every week since i brought it. Great fun with mates!! PM if you want to do team team sometime. :)

Best RTS game series ever especially AoE 2 is the best among all generations.
