Free Samsung S22 5G 128GB (or Bonus $800 JB Gift Card) for New Port-in to Telstra 300GB $79/Month Plan for 24 Months @ JB Hi-Fi

710

Need to swap to Telstra recently and went to one JB HIFI store in ENEX Perth, WA to inquire the plans.
New promotion just for this week limited.
The old plan was $99*24 months. But now it will credit $20 per month, which brings the monthly fee to $79.
On top of it, you can get a Samsung Galaxy S22 5G 128GB / $800 JB hifi gift card. (You can also upgrade to S22 higher-spec by paying the gap).

In my case, I have to use Telstra network so not too many choices for me.
Besides, I have an NBN at home, for which I pay $60 per month and I am living by myself. I am going to cancel the broadband and just use this 300GB, which should be too much for me.. (Checked this month I only used 150+GB with my NBN).
Unfortunately, I am an Apple user, so I might get the gift card. (Though the phone values $1249, I can't be bothered to sell it on Facebook).
The total cost will be 79*24= $1896. After deducting gift card value, monthly pay is less than my previous NBN cost.

Problem is that the contract is 24 months. 59 a month with 500 voucher for 12 months was the benchmark.

    • +5

How long is it still the benchmark for if it hasn't been offered in over a year?

      • +5

Last time it was offered was December 26 2021 (about 3 months ago) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/673656
You need to contact customer service to get $10 a month extra credit, making it $59 a month for 12 months.

        • -6

That was a One day only deal (which I would argue you can't claim it as a benchmark especially since you have to be ported out for 30 days) and the $10 per month credit is not a sure thing.

          • @coxymla: It was also offered in Oct/Nov 2021 (can’t remember exactly) which is when I signed up.

Anyway, benchmark smenchmark. The only bench I am concerned about is my press.

            • +5

@Lois Price: How do you know someone does bench presses? Don't worry, they'll tell you…

              • -7

                @Zorlin: Through your mum.

                • @Lois Price: I am wound. What a clever retort.

                  • -2

@Zorlin: Not sure why you had a go at me in the first place big fella

                    • -2

@Lois Price: It wasn't really "having a go", it was a light-hearted jab, similar to "How do you know someone runs Arch Linux/is a vegan/does Crossfit" etc. Have you never seen that format before?

      • I thought there was one earlier this month? Might have only been a 2-day deal though, 10th and 11th of March.

        • 2021 :)

        • That's last year bro.

    • +1

Was there any bonus data on the $59 plan? Works our $17.34 per month if my maths is right

Telstra day again on the 2nd of April

      • +1

Iirc it was 80GB per month for the duration of the 12 months contract.

        • You remember it correctly. I was on that deal, and used the gift card a year later to buy a new phone.

          • @prhino: It was a good deal. Even after immediate cancellation you still profit as the termination cost was cheaper than the voucher.

    • -1

If one only cares about the plan,.. this could work out to $17.33 per month if 2x factors are possible, 1x selling the S22 for $1000 (my latest I managed $950) and 2x this $20 port-in to Telstra (someone posted below) and not sure who offers this yet? either Jbhifi or Telstra . so anyone have any details about the port-in offer, well certainly love to know the detalis, cheers 👍

(Edit: And those Samsung buds2 (I think included) must be worth $100 divide by 24 months another $4.17 off per month)

  • +2

    that's a good deal

  • Can I pay the difference and get the S22 Plus, or the Ultra? Instead of paying $0 and getting this plan.

    • +5

      I don't know, but I did read the post…

(You can also upgrade to S22 higher-spec by paying the gap).
      Quote/unquote

      So seems you can

      • +1

Yeah, thanks I saw that just now. Assuming they count the S22 as $1249 (which is what they sell it for), not as $800. Otherwise not worth it for the upgrade cost.

    • You can, I did the same during preorder (upgraded to S22 ultra and paid the difference)

  • +1

(You can also upgrade to S22 higher-spec by paying the gap)

If this is true, and assuming they count the S22 as $1249 —> Then this is a better deal than the regular $1000 credit + $99 per month for 2 years.

Unless IF when you want to upgrade to high-spec S22's like the Plus or Ultra, they only count the $800 credit, then it's just similar.

    • +1

They do, and $1250 off any Samsung s22 basically. I just checked in store

      • Niiiice, thanks for the update. Deal running until April 3, I'm going to wait and see if there's any easter specials that might come and drop prices more.

  • +4

I get this will suit some people but for those on lower cost plans who aren’t locked in to a contract like me, if I was to move from amaysim where I get all the calls and data I need and more, this deal would cost me an extra $1245 over two years, minus the $800 voucher. I’d be out of pocket $445 and stuck with Telstra for two years. So it’s no deal.

    • +5

Amaysim is garbage though. Can't wait for my 12 months plan to run out so I can move back to Boost. Terrible reception, no conference call, automated calls from overseas banks don't work.
      Never again.

      • I canceled my service when I realised that there are no conference call on Amaysim. When contacted they said its a feature in pending list since many years:)

      • +1

It's amazing how people just look at the 'price'. Much like insurance for example. Then they realise they can never claim because the policy wasn't worth the paper its written on.

  • +2

With inflation nowadays, this should only be 12 months contract. Not too much of an ask?

    • +2

Yeah a s22 and a year of Telstra service for hundreds less than the retail price of the phone? Nah should be sweet bro.

    • Inflation is pushing things up, might be better with a fixed 24 month plan and bank the $1250 savings now.

In 12 months a phone plan might cost $120 a month and a 12 month old phone $3k, if we see GPU and car style price rises in that sector.

      • People haven't worked out how to mine with phone plans yet.

  • +1

Has anyone tried getting this deal but only being away from Telstra for 19 days instead of the 30 they say you have to be to port back in?

They reckon you don't get the gift card if you've only been ported a way from Telstra for less than 30 days.

Anyone have any experience with this ?

    • +3

Correct, needs to be 30 days for the GC.

      • What if I want the phone not the GC?

        • Any bonus JB offers is based on you being a new Telstra customer whether that be a GC or the credit towards the phone.

    • +1

What i did last time was sign up with new number. Went home, called Telstra to deactivate my current service and replaced my new with the old.

      • Yeh, could do that but I've ported out to Optus now, so would have to port back in to prepaid. Not sure if they can do that with prepaid to postpaid though?

      • +1

Tempted to do this but scared it will backfire. Anyone else vouch this is easy to do or are there horror stories?

        • +3

I did what vietjesus did, although it was a massive pain for me. When changing the new service to my old number, the transfer failed and they effectively "lost" my old phone number for a few weeks. Took multiple levels of escalations to get it sorted.

        • +1

i've done this on 3 seperate occasions..

  • +3

stay away from s22, shit battery, get 22 plus at least or best with Ultra

    • +3

Not in my experience. I'm a heavy user and have all of the battery saving options off so that my apps aren't put to sleep by the aggressive algorithm. I have 120Hz off and am getting minimum 7 hours screen time every single day. That is similar to what you'd get from a 13 Pro.

    • I got s20 4g so 2 yr old model and it has a bigger battery capacity and most things are barely upgraded when compared to s22

      • +1

Exynos efficiency was still dogshit at that stage.

    • Did a bit of my own research.. averaging relative battery lives of S22, S22 ultra, iPhone 13, S21, Zenfone 8, across GSMarena, DXO, PCmag, Android central, and two drain tests I can find on youtube, the S22 battery life is 79% that of S21.

I.e. When you reach 'critical' 5% battery level on the S22, with the same use, you still have 25% left on the S21.

Despite this amazing deal, I think I will go for the S21.

Case in point, you can see how terribly the S22 performs in basic tasks like playing music, if you look at the Typical Usage curve and Estimated autonomy graph for Music (both of which are important for my use). https://www.dxomark.com/samsung-galaxy-s22-exynos-battery-te…

      • GSMarena

In that case you're comparing Exynos to Exynos.
Efficiency is now better since Aus market has gone Exynos to Snapdragon. I'm never getting under 7 hours screen time web browsing and streaming with all battery saving off, and screen on 60Hz (still very smooth).

    • I say stay away from ridiculous sized phones which sadly have become a norm these days. Everyone looks like a borg with them. If my phone lasts until 8pm and give me back my life every night, it's actually a good thing. The s22 is one of a few gem that has the proper size for human hand. I'm using s10e in 2022 for the same reason.

  • +2

They used to have the s21 5g+ for 99/month last yr with 12 months contract.
This promo seems to early for eofy.

There might be a chance they release a better offer near the eofy sale.

  • +2

Reckon previous deal last week was better, $69 12 month plan, and S22 for $499.
Signed up, sold phone on fb marketplace straight away for $950, so brings down the monthly "cost" to $31.50.

Not quite as good as last years which had the $10 credit also (and $500 GC that could also be off loaded for ~$450) but not far off it.

  • Yes. Wait.
But no external storage is my big gripe for these flagship phones.

  • Is this still the exynos version or are we finally getting the Qualcomm version?

    • +5

All S22 released in Oz rocking Qualcomm.

  • +6

Last time I did one of these Telstra tried to cancel my $10 a month credit 9 months in… Only when I said they broke the terms of contract with jb after a hour of arguing and said I considered the contract voided did they credit my $10…

    (profanity) telstra

    • +1

      Profanity Telstra for sure!

      • I went Aldi, so they still win, but my $59 became 25 😂

  • +7

For FREE!!!! Just have to pay $1,896

    • +2

These deals are only good now if your employer pays for plans. It used to be a ripper when Telstra had half price early termination charges a couple years ago, so you'd get a half price phone (or some were never billed) LOL.

  • -4

Currently paying 9.3/month with enough data for me. This requires 45.7/month with overkill data after gift card. Well, yes it's T and 5g.however I am fine with Optus and 4g.

    • +2

      Good on you

  • If is good if you really use a lot per month.

  • +5

Give me half of the data for half of the price.

  • I did the $99 deal on Saturday…now they come out with the $79 deal. Any suggestions on how to “argue” I now want the $79 deal lol?

    • +1

I recall someone saying it can be renegotiate. Try giving your store a call

      • +1

        Cooling off period?

        • No cooling off for in person.

    • Im on the same boat as you mate…i signed up to the $99 plan early march.

I called up telstra first, they told me they can't do it as i signed up through jb-hifi…
Then i called jb hifi and they told me they can't either.
Im going to try tomorrow again with telstra and try claim the $20 port-in credit via chat (instead of call)

  • +5

24 month plans suck. I'm waiting for a good deal on a 12 month.

  • I would find this deal enticing to replace my home internet as well, if not for the fact that I get no reception at home.

  • Anyone recently switch out and back into telstra with jb? Any problems?

    • will require 30 days at least

    • Depends on the JB TM
Last month i switched from Telstra to Optus. And after 3 days with Optus went instore and the TM said that should be fine. Signed me up back to Telstra - got the jb card and used it to buy pixel pro 6.

I did it at the Watergardens store.

      • If you were with Telstra prepaid then it’s fine as they delete some backend details as soon as you port out. If you were on postpaid with Telstra before then the JB employee will get written up amongst other things.

        • -1

JB rep confirmed you'll get the gift card balance or S22 cost on your next bill if you're not ported out for 30 days min before porting back.
          It's in the fine print.

  • I picked up the $69 deal the other day (100gb, $300 GC) and got on Telstra chat and managed to get the $20 port in credit on the first try. Could be a good deal if you could get that on this deal too.

    • Will try next time they have $400/$500 GC.

      • Went in the other day and we're unofficially offering $400

    • As in $20 off per month? How did you manage to get the chat rep to give you that?

    • Did you chat with Telstra after signing up the contract?

    • Who do you get the $20 port over/in deal from Jbhifi or Telstra and I thought it was only $10 per month

    • pls explain in more detail we are eager to absorb your knowledge dogzilla

  • Anyone know,.. wasn't there a $10 per month credit to a new port-in to Telstra (I'm guessing offered from Telstra) for porting in or something?

Edit; these S22s (most) have been reaching up to $950 on price, sometimes more if one could be bothered

  • How long until you can cancel the plan on these? And do you need to pay back the giftcard?

  • Is there a difference between the telstra network when buying at JB vs directly from telstra?
My sick of my optus "5G"

    • I was with the JB Hi-Fi "Telstra" plan about 1 year ago and it didn't include 5G. Haven't read the Ts and Cs about this deal, but if it doesn't include this, then you'll be getting 4G.

I didn't have many issues with it when I was on a JB plan using 4G with an iPhone 11 Pro and a 13 Pro Max, but I wanted the 5G functionality so I swapped to Telstra direct.

EDIT: The $49 JB plans don't have 5G while the other $69-$99 plans do. Here's my Telstra 5G speeds on a 13 Pro Max indoors and quite far from the speedtest server.

      https://i.imgur.com/Vm87o97.jpeg

      • Just get on Telstra chat and give them some sob story I just bought a 5G phone and i need 5G turned on on my simcard, best get on chat like 3am in the morning, hopefully you'll chat to someone that has no idea and just switches 5G on for you, And always state that this was told to me would be 5G

Edit: I have a data prepaid simcard which I think should be 4G only (speeds were over 200Mbps on 4G so i didnt care, plus 5G came into me area maybe 8 months into my plan anyway) though 10 months into use of this prepaid plan I asked Telstra chat if this should be 5G and few chat agents said yes, so eventually one of them supposedly fixed by my simcard by switching on 5G, yupz got 5G going

So I started complaining why didn't I have 4G for 10 months, I did have too complain few times complaining I should be compensated, anyway eventually they gave me a bonus 50gb of data but the most important thing was it extended my prepaid plan for another 12 months

PS: you could spends hours chatting to them though

    • You'll be on the full telstra network (that includes 5g). All you're doing is getting on telstra via Jb Hifi.
Infact you actually are signed up on the telstra website.

  • Still don't think this is a deal worthy to sign up to

  • Anyone tried to get a S22+ and what was the price gap?

    • Early this month i jumped on the $99 plan and i paid $399 extra for the s22+ 256gb model. $299 if u just get the 128gb

    • It is $300 gap. If you're getting the phone deal it is a $1249 gift hard that goes towards the phone.

  • Currently using Optus 4G Home Broadband. Would I be able to get this and just replace the Sim card in the modem to use as home internet?

Also, does anyone know if this deal can be used for new numbers or just port-ins?
    Thanks!

    • +1

I am doing this for last few years . My data usage is low and works for me. You got to check what model is your option device

    • +1

I think a new number is fine, which they suggested yesterday. Might just pop over or give your local JBHIFI a call

  • +1

I've just been into store. $1250 off any Samsung device basically. Wouldn't allow me to do it and keep my number though as I'm on Boost currently. So no deal unfortunately
