Been waiting for this after I missed the last $500 gift card deal

    • When was the last time this came up?

  • +3

Not quite the $59 for $500 everyone is aiming for but I guess it will do.

Does anyone know the firm definition of port in? Been with Aldi for couple weeks max after finding out belong is no longer counted as a port in

    • +1

Ask for the $10/month port-in welcome credit via Telstra chat.

      • +6

Yeah, I am super cheap. Was hoping to do that as well for a super combo of $49/month

        • $49? how?

          • -5

@michael9865: Well, it isn't possible now. If Jb applied a $10 credit and then demand a $10 credit from Telstra.

Honestly tho, anything is possible with enough perseverance with Telstra chat. Last JB deal I ended up with a free $1000 phone and cancelled my plan after a month.

            • +12

@Nand0sx: "Demand" is a strong word

            • @Nand0sx: This was the ultimate deal when it came around, followed closely by the $69/month for 150-180gb with $500 GC

      • Heads up, it's only a 6 month credit they apply

        • +2

Not if you ask nicely for 12 months, which is the maximum the Reps can apply the credit for.
Source: I have received 12 months of port in credit… twice.

          • +3

@yojabbajabba: First sign up with JB, then, when service already active plead with chat?
What's the incentive for Telstra, we are already in a contract at that point!? 🤔

            • +5

@ripprind: From what I gather from previous chats to Telstra and other OzB’s comments the $10/month port-in welcome credit it the standard offering that Telstra chat support staff can offer. Both times I’ve asked they’ve told me the maximum they can apply it for is 12 months. I believe this is due to the contract length; would be interested to hear from those with 24 month contacts of how long the welcome credit was offered for.

For those wanting to give this a go, here is the same script I’ve used both times

Hi Telstra, I’ve just ported in from (insert provider here), and the in-store rep mentioned I could apply for a $10/month welcome port-in credit. Would you be able to help me with this?
              Many thanks

if at first you don’t succeed, try another rep

              • +1

                @yojabbajabba: Worked 1st time December 2021. Easy $120.

              • +1

@yojabbajabba: @yojabbajabba Thank you for sharing the script. Worked on the first go for me :)!

        • Here is the exact quote from Telstra chat when I clarified earlier in the year re: $10/month.

The welcome credit will only apply for the first 12 months of your subscription. After that your original charge will go back to normal.

          Hope this helps :)

          • +1

@yojabbajabba: Thanks for clarification, I'll message them for an extension

    any deal for mobile broadband??

  • Are you still able to sign up, then port your current number over to the new plan via Telstra chat if a current Telstra customer?

Did that last year, worked a treat.

    • +1

Yes. Can confirm it worked earlier this year (October)

      • +1

        Thanks champ, good news.

    • How does this work again?

How did you port your current number over the new plan? Did you have to sign up and get a new number then port your old number to that plan instead?

What did you do to the other number?

      • +5

Sign up to plan with new number on same Telstra account as your existing Telstra service. Jump on chat and ask Telstra to close original service and ask for number to be transferred to new service. Wait with ~4hrs of no reception as Telstra does their thing.

        • Can the existing service be a prepaid one?

          • @BargainMe: Yes - Telstra change the service to postpaid to allow the number transfer to happen. You might have to pay for a day pro-rata of the cheapest post-paid plan.

        • We're you eligible for the $10 "port in" credit using this method too?

    • +4

Can confirm it works but YMMV I tried 4 online reps and none of them would do it they even got me to go in store and everything and they still wouldn't do it. Telstra complaints finally did it for me though but for me definitely not worth the hassle anymore.

  • +1

I literally just ported out from this plan to the Vodafone 200gb for $50/month yesterday

    • +1

I just ported out today and went with kogan for 3 months. I'll miss the 80gb but 30gb for $4 a month is good.

      • $4 a month? That's so cheap

I don't use more than that anyways, but I have wifi at home

        • They had the 3 month deal a while back and you had until the end of the year to activate it. Its good for a place holder while I see what the best deal is for the longer term.

  • +2

Why are loyal existing customers always exempt from such deals?

    • +38

Because they’ve already got your money

      • +1

Got an award for this comment !!

        Woo Hoo

    • +17

Because they know it's a hassle to port out and then back in and because it makes their shareholder reports look better because they signed up X new customers

      • +2

Is it worth it though? For example I left February thinking I will buy a new phone by March and coming back to Telstra on one of these deals. But then decided to wait for better phones to come out end of the year. And I was with Telstra for over a decade before they lost me. I am still waiting and might wait until February for the S22 Ultra to come out, since it's basically the Note from next year onwards with the S-Pen built in. And I wouldn't hesitate to go to another company if they provide a better S22 Ultra deal.

        • +2

Yeah I think Telstra are silly for this but maybe their data backs up their strategy.

Me personally I've ported to Optus with plans of coming back to Telstra but it's been almost a year on prepaid and I stills haven't found a deal worth joining Telstra back for.

If the JB deal was available for existing customers, I'd be locked on 12 or 24months rolling lol

      • On shareholder report there will be a section

"× no of new customers from OZbargainers"

    • Not totally true, got an email message from Telstra saying i could recontract for $49 on the JB Hifi plan (with no gift card) a month out from my JB's plan from last december.

      • +10

The gift card is what makes it a deal

      • Without the GC the deal is useless and expensive.

    • +1

      It's the lazy tax.

  • Sad but true😟

  • So how exactly does this work? Can I use it to buy one of the 21ultra or zflip for no upfront cost?

    • +7

If you can find a 21ultra for $500

    • +1

If I’m not mistaken you could probably hold onto the gift card and do this every year till you have enough to buy a phone outright.

  • +2

Anyway of doing this online? I'd prefer to avoid the covid boxing day crowds

    • Apparently it can be done over the phone

      • I hope so, I'm definitely going to ring and try find out

        • +4

I dont think it can, ID has to be checked in person!

Otherwise, everyone would be a candidate for Identity theft and mobile bills they didnt do themselves.

          • @GLO: I'd be happy for them to start the process over the phone and just go in to show ID sign whatever, saves stuffing around in the store all day

          • +1

@GLO: I signed up to this over the phone last year without any issue.

            • @nigel deborah: Mate did you get transferred to your local store or did you speak to a call centre? Everytime I call I get routed to an actual store.

  • +1

Been waiting for this but Boxing Day will be hectic in store

  • How long does an existing customer have to be ported out to be eligible for porting in for this deal again? I plan to port back in after my 200gb Vodafone sim runs out.

    • +2

I don't believe there is a minimum, but some have commented that the JB person may ask for atleast 1 month.

  • This is data shaped at 150kb/s after 80gb right ?

    • Yep. I just ported out of this plan today

    • That sux
I'm with Optus 150GB/month and if I go over it's still 1.5Mbps, which is plenty fast for me, I mostly don't even notice that I'm over.

  • +2

I'm surprised they would do this on Boxing Day. I'm sure the stressed out staff will appreciate it haha

  • Why can't they just do this deal 2x (time + credit). It's the same deal, does anyone know if calling them they would do something like that?

I just want $1000 credit on the $69 plan (for 24 months).

    • +1

They probably think they have you ongoing, so $500 for 24 months

  • Dammit! I have one month left on my Optus plan. I can’t wait to leave- their coverage has been terrible.

    • +2

You can still leave just pay the small remaining minimum cost difference. Not worth waiting if reception is too shit

  • +2

Surely with the current COVID situation it would be better to do phone sales team do remote sign ups than to have every man and his dog rock up to wait in store?

  • can anyone confirm if this can be done over the phone?

  • How would you apply this for tax purposes on a work phone? Plan is 828$ per year so you would just apply that amount on the tax return?

    • +4

Looks I'm sure technically you are somehow supposed to report the $500 gift card in there, otherwise that would be a huge loop hole if people were able to pull similar stunts on a grander scale. I.e Toyota doing a buy this Hilux for 80k and we'll give you a 25k "gift card" …
But yeah basically I'm sure everyone is just claiming the full amount and there is no way the tax man would go after you for it.

      • +4

What's this hilux gift card offer?

  • Hoping this deal comes back
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/662374

  • Does anyone know how to get overseas calling on these plans?

    • +2

Ahh I tried so many things to get international calling. Spoke to Telstra store, chat and JB Hi-fi Apparently these JB hi-fi plans are non modifiable. So no add ons at all. The only way is to cancel the plan and move to another provider. Bummer

      • Thanks for confirming!

      • Does that mean Telstra one doesn't work with this plan if its not modifiable ? I wanted to get an esim for my Samsung watch.

  • +1

This plan is good, because it's 12 months only.

But if people are paying $4 at Kogan a month, that's hard to beat.

    • +1

Reception is horrible in my area that's for sure.

  • How long does the it take to get the gift card usually?

And with the $10 port-in credit, do you ask in-store or harass someone on the my telstra app?

    • +2

I've gotten the card before I left the store both times.

  • Bah just signed up with good guys $800 over 24 months.

Though probably don't want to go through the hassle of cancelling and changing again in one year right on boxing day. to make it a $1000 over 24 months saving.

  • So you can't get a new number now ? Strictly port in only ?

    • +1

You can get a new number

  • Umm,

Can I use the gift card on the spot to buy a new phone as well?

  • My 5G hasn’t been as fast as it was last contract

    • +5

I think other factors affect the 5G speed more than the contract

      • idk, same area lower speeds. quite noticable.
yeah i know contracts dont affect speed but feel like my speed has been throttled or there has been a reduced 5g range.

        • +4

Maybe more people in your area have been getting the covid vaccine?

  • +3

I signed up to the $59 $500 gift card 12month plan last boxing day.. and it's gone up $10?.. is this the best deal going ?

    • +2

Same here. This inflation is killing me, I didn't even get a raise this year, but everything seems to be going up like 10% and more.

      • Shut downs and $$ money printing has inflation going out of control.
It will keep rising. 💯 %

    • it hasnt gone up? the difference is in the Port-in credit

  • Why only Cockburn has 600 gift card?

    • To treat the burns…. 😝

    • Is cockburn still doing $600?

    • Really?

  • So my contract from last year boxing day is about to end as it's approaching one year, is there a way for me to port out to a different service the day before and then port in to this deal? Or is there an easier way?

    • You may want to refer to previous JB/Telstra deals and comments that require a porting out of Telstra for at least 1 month before you would be eligible to port back in Telstra for this offer.

  • Wonder if they'll do the 180gb for $69 plan ($99 plan with the -$30 off). Could do with the data, not the gift card.
