128 not future proof, especially for a $2k phone

    • +21

I was leaning towards the 256gb version, but the discounted price on the 128gb made this an easy decision. There's always iCloud if you run out of space. YEMV

      • +4

        lol why the neg?

        • +3

          I +'d you.
No idea who neg'd you over your choice of phone…
I'm not a fan of apple, but I'm not going to neg someone over being an apple device.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: I have 128 never crossed 50gb cloud all the way.

            • +2

@jetabe: Ever since I started to use youtube music and stop downloading all music, (I don't have much photo/video) I have about the same usage as you.

      • +8

Just as a side note: I was in the same boat, wanted to get a 128gb until I found out you lose out on ProRes with 128 as it's only on 256 GB models or more.

    • +1

$1690 = $2k ok, you heard of iCloud?

      • +3

Some people still don't trust having their private content on the cloud so…

        • +23

so then dont buy a phone that doesn't meet your "wants".
Calling 128gb "not future proof" is very centered around an individuals personal use case.
I've never used more than 75-80gb. So personally 128gb is plenty.

          • +16

@[Deactivated]: What do you mean you don’t store your blurays and lossless music library on your phone?

            • +5

@askbargain: Ah man I forgot about my 8k blockbuster film collection…

            • +4

@askbargain: Its all in the cloud. Because we all have super fast mobile signal to play this back. Not to mention unlimited data to do so.

          • -2

@[Deactivated]: if u take pictures 128gv is not enough

            • @javawoo: I take pictures and videos.
But they don't stay on my phone for long, I move them over to either physical or cloud storage. (Or both)

        • My 300gb of photos/videos are not that private lol

          • @[Deactivated]: So whats the onlyfans page?

            • @xoom: nope, 20 plus years of family videos/photos

        • Stop downloading porn mate.

      • +16

iCloud is NOT a storage solution. It is a backup/syncing service.

I did tech support for Apple. The amount of people that run into issues because they think that they can just store things in the cloud and save space on their phone was absurd. Yes using the "optimize storage" option for photos helps. But saying icloud is a solution to low capacity phones is just false

        • +3

          THANK YOU

        • Having to explain this to so many family and friends is infuriating!

        • See if the cloud work like you just save you files to it then delete the local copy. Then one can use the icloud as storage and not a backup/sync service.

Then a small storage iphone can work.

        • +1

          PREACH lol

        • 🥇 thanks.
Don't you have to pay for iCloud?

          • @shegeloaf: You get 5gb as standard for free. This isn't even enough to hold a backup so is effectively useless. There are options for 50gb, 200gb, and 2tb which are all subscription services.

      • +1

Why would I spend 2k… errr $1690 on something and then have to use iCloud? Seems counter productive.

        • don't, they have 256 and 512/1TB

        • You would rather spend $3k… errr $1950 to get more storage and not use the cloud at all?

        • Preach!

    • +1

nextcloud + photoprism as private cloud

    • -1

If you use cloud storage then 128gb is fine.

There are some caveats though in that if you have large media files/have lots of games installed/shoot in RAW or lots of 4K video etc.

I have a 128GB iPhone 12 and upload photos and docs to both Google Photos and One Drive.

      • -1

I cannot wait for these companies icloud, google to have a major fault in their 'cloud' service to see the faces of users.

        • Its happened already before.

        • Multi billion dollar companies dropping offline for any extended period of time, yeah I don't think so.

    • +4

For most people, 128GB is perfectly fine. E.g. I just use my phone to make calls, send messages, browse social media, reply to emails, take the occasional photo. I have a 128GB S22 Ultra and have barely used half of that storage.

If you use your phone to play games, then sure, pay more for the 256GB or 512GB version, but if I played games on the go, I'd still get a 128GB phone and use the spare cash to get a Nintendo Switch for a real gaming experience. But that's just me.

FWIW, even if you took 5GB of photos every day, just plug your phone into your computer and copy the files off. When was the last time you needed immediate access to some random photo you took 18 months ago?

      • What do these people do when they get a new phone? Phone storage isn't a bucket you just keep filling up, just temporary.

        • People are lazy - I still remember back in the 90s where I had to burn CDs so I could delete files from my 2GB HDD to free up space. If your phone is full, get a 1TB external hard drive for $30, plug your phone into your computer, copy off old photos and videos that you took over a year ago. Repeat once a year.

You know back in the day, when you still had to sync your iPhone with iTunes (this was back in the 2G / 3G / 3GS era), you could unselect old photos and music you haven't listened to in ages on iTunes and it would pull it off your phone to save space. This was before Apple started realising that you could make a killing selling people storage they don't need and cloud storage on top of that.

      • Music, files, movie, pictures they all add up. Having an external SDcard slot is the real answer to low phone storage.

Did you hear that samsung and Apple?

    • +1

lol "future proof". No device that you can't completely upgrade with new parts is "future proof". The phone isn't all of a sudden going to get an update that lets you take 8K video. 128GB is as fine for today as it is for in 2 years time.

  • +5

Should I buy this phone or keep current and get a gaming rig and a ps5?

    • +13

Or 889 packets of Tim tams

      • +5

How many mcdonalds softserve cone will that be?

Thats a trick question however as them ice cream machine at mcdonalds don't work ever.

        • +1

maccas softserves are the best unit of monetary measurement

      • 3500 small packets of chips or this phone

    • +2

Depends on what you got? I jumped from 10s Max to this and don't see much of a difference at all apart from maybe improved battery life. Yes camera and screen are better on this but how often do you use the camera to justify $2k price tag though ?

Some things are worse for me on this phone eg: Apple Carplay worked flawlessly on my car with 10s Max but had hundreds of issues on this phone and I am not the only one, So unless there's something really wrong with your current phone I would advise against it.

      • +1

I would have said previously wait for 3 iterations of the phone cycle to update but now I feel more like 4 as IMO they've maxed out of possible benefits (like you said battery life, camera and screen) Spend 80% more for a 20% gain. Good ol Pareto principle

        • +1

          100% right ✅

    • +1

A gaming rig for $1,000? Do tell.

    • and a life

    • +1

Or don’t get the ps5 and get a reclining sofa.

      • +5

Instructions unclear. Ended up with an xbox and a lawn chair.

  • +3

better off buying Apple Gift Cards from BigW now for 10% equivalent discount in EverydayRewards Dollars (can be used off shopping from Woolies group companies) then pricematching with Apple :)

  • +1

Still waiting for another 12mini sale. December seems like so long ago.

  • +2

Almost 2k for a phone with 128gb on it? That's a hard no.

    • +2

If you are going to round up by adding $200, you can get the 256gb version.

However $2K for 256gb is still asking for too much, as is $1700 for 128gb

  • Seems to be price matching Catch. 256gb and 512gb ones have similar discounts as well.

  • +4

Yes, the price sucks for a x months/yrs old phone, just like the resale price of your near new android.

  • Hi Op, can I get a copy of the receipt pls.

  • +1

Picked up a new 13 256gb with $100 case and GSP for $1K today off FBM, with JB receipt, happy days, $600 saving.

    • -1

Hi, where did you pickup this from? Can you please share more info on how to obtain this deal. Thank you :))

  • +1

I've been a long time android user (since 2009ish) and I recently contemplated swapping to iPhone just to try it out… When I saw that they're still not USB-C and over 1.7k for a flagship I just laughed and closed the tab straight away.

    • +1

      username half checks out?

    • +1

When I saw that they're still not USB-C

This is actually a legitimate gripe I have with iPhone - I have an iPad Pro and Macbook, both which charge via USB-C. I've been wanting to try an iPhone, but having to worry about Lightning cables and the fact that they're much more expensive than USB-C cables just push me away.

    • Why so many down votes? You need to remember this is 1.7K ON SALE for not the top of the range model and you need to spend that every 2 years.

      • +2

I knew I'd be downvoted but oh well. I actually own an iPad pro and its great - Apple has the premium tablet market on lock and I can use the same charger for my laptop, tablet and phone which I really like. I legitimately would try an iPhone if it was usb c.

        • I tried iPhone and a mac mini many years ago. I got rid of them both because you could really feel the "you need to upgrade" vibes after 12 months with all avenues of upgrade blocked except to purchase the next model. I'm still running my PC from 2014, put in an SSD and maxed out the ram and runs win 11 just fine.

  • +2

I tried to upgrade from the 12 pro before, but found the 13 pro max too large - its a lot heavier and wider. Did not enjoy it, so returned it and stuck with the 12 pro - still happy with it, no lag and excellent camera and perfect size.

    • Out of interest, where did you buy it from that allowed you to return (or is this fairly standard and I've missed it)?

I'm in a similar position where I'm considering upgrading my iPhone 11 to a 13 Pro Max for a bit more screen real-estate (as well as the cameras, etc), but a bit concerned about the size/weight jump.

      • +2

There is a standard 14-day return period when you purchase directly for Apple.

"For any undamaged product, simply return it with its included accessories and packaging along with the original receipt (or gift receipt) and original packaging within 14 days of the date you receive the product and we’ll exchange it or offer a refund based upon the original payment method."

Samsung is slowly following suit, but has there ever been a company with such contempt for their customers?

A 'Pro' phone shouldn't come with a 128GB option. Or if it does, give it an SD card slot and USB port with greater speeds than USB 2.0

Getting this variant, you don't even get all the Pro features.

    • +2

has there ever been a company with such contempt for their customers?

When their customers continue to flock to them despite the contempt, you could argue that it's deserved.

      • +1

Thats the problem. When their customer base receives a flogging. Their immediate response is thank you. May I have another.

        • lol, soooo true. I actually did laugh out loud when I read that. My $2000 iPhone has started to slow down just as the new model has arrived. Oh well, I'll line up and get another. Not that Samsung are much better. I find the pixels pretty good, I found the battery was more the limiting factor but you can change that

        • +1

          😄 sad, but true.

  • And this price is a deal? Dear lord. What has become of the mobile world. I'm a culprit encouraging it too I know, but this ever creeping pricing is just sad.
