Reviews also indicate non-flat surfaces, defects in manufacturing, and damage in shipping (can't really hold the last one against them too much).

If you're just going got some run of the mill sharpener, get one of those V shaped ones.

If you want a good entry level stones for some better knives, get the King 1000/6000 double sided. About $60 I think. Will always be good. You'll essentially never replace stones, so no reason to get cheap ones.

Bought cos my current knives just rip holes in the fabric of space-time.

  • or this ?

    • Well, this is only one stone.

      • I have $3 stone from dollar shop and it does a decent job :D

From that experience I thought one stone is enough, I could be wrong though.

        • Same. Got if from Daiso. Happy with it. People here spending $70 in whetstones xd

          • @josepet: If you don't see a difference between a $3 stone and $70 whetstone then enjoy

            • @OzBragain: Didn't say that, at all. Subpar reading skills I guess. I'm happy with my $3 stone for my $8 Kiwi brand knife. That's it ;)

                A little sensitive there champ.

It's all good, have fun with your $3 stone.

  • All this whetstone talk is make me whet 😝

      Are you stoned?

  • I have global knives, which stones should I use?

Be aware that after using the sharpening stone for a while (more than just a few sharpening), the stone need to be flattened.

    • Some of the Amazon kits come with flattening stones (cheapo ones anyway). I'll be grabbing one of those to practice on some 2nd hand japanese chisels.

    • Indeed. So eventually you need to flatten them, so if they come not 100% flat it doesn’t seem like a huge deal?

  • Watch that bamboo base mould like a mofo.

  • Personally, I settled for a diamond stone. Less maintenance and will always be flat. I bought the Sharpal one off Amazon. So far so good.

    • Yeah, much easier to maintain and use but do you find it doesn't get as sharp?

      • Was pretty sharp for me. The Sharpal has both 300/1200 grit. Anything above 1000 grit will probably be considered as "polishing", which can be done by getting a separate leather strop and green polishing compound. But at 1200 grit, it's sharp.

Cool, I have a 600/1000 diamond stone which I have yet to get great results out of yet. Whetstone though, great. probably need more practice and also diamond stones generally need to break in a little as well. Back to the grind stone it is!
          Thanks

  • Just received mine and there's a big chip on the same corner on both stones. Also smaller chips on two other corners of one stone.

Probably won't really affect use though. Not sure if I should return it

    • Hey I got mine a few days ago.
Bad wrapping here, but stones intact, no chips.
      Also they are pretty flat.

My recommendation is to contact support using the chat function, let them know what happened and they may offer to refund if you send back. Then you say that’s too much hassle and they will give you $5 credit for your troubles.

      Better than nothing.

Also it seems like a decent amount of kit for price paid.

I will also give the base another coat of polyurethane before use to avoid potential mould issues.

  • I have similar stone OP posted. It could still get your knivies sharper without problem.
while it lacks of consistence on the edge if your skill is not great. And lower grit is pretty soft and usually, the middle section will be hollowed and flatten is required especially you are the beginner and struggling to maintain the consistence of angle.

for the budget one, I recommend king 1000/6000. Or spending a bit more to get shapton glass 1000 grit which is a bit user-friendly for starter since it is hard and without requiring flatten for a long time. 1000 grit would be already very sharp for kitech knives.
