GPO 746 Rotary Telephone $64.99 Delivered @ Costco (Membership Required)

100

A great idea to mess with your kids or for anyone looking for a bit of nostalgia. From what I can find, it's selling for more than $90 elsewhere.

Description

The GPO 746 Rotary Telephone prides itself on its traditional and authentic look and feel with built-in modern technology. The 1970s household loved the GPO 746 and our updated design perfectly echoes its no-nonsense, classic style. Compatible with modern telephone banking.

Very satisfying to slam down the receiver if you have a disagreement. Seemed unbreakable and made a 'ding' when you slammed it down.
I have two sisters and ours survived any and all teenage drama tantrums,

    • yep bring back those slamming moments

Ha ha yeah. Also a great sign-off on talk back radio rants with that kerrrunch sound.

The handsets were great for pranking with people who hold them down the bottom part. When they are hard listening, gently pull at the top. They try drawing that end back, trying to counter you. When you get a couple of inches gap, let it go - thunk! Hilarious when it all comes together and works.

  • The original models are the Model M's of telephones

  • We never used these. We used PMG 801's and 802's

  • If anyone has one or gets one, I'd love to know if you can remove the dialing section easily or not. Would love to have a similar phone lying around that resembles the "Hotline" from the Control game series

If you look at the zoomed in photos, you can see the rotating dial is separate to outer casing. This was also the case with the original phones, the inner circle dialling mechanism was replaceable as a complete unit. Because this is obviously a remake there's no way to be sure until you open it up… but it could very well be the same. The fact they quote "modern internals" might mean however that the dialling mechanism is now incorporated into the phone circuitry to save costs. It used to be the case that the analogue rotating mech was a separate and replaceable unit to everything else in the phone.

Also, if you want a "hotline" red light/button thing you'd probably need to make it yourself.

  • British? 999 for emergency.
Compatible with telephone banking! Take a while to dial in a credit card number.

0118 999 881 999 119 7253 is the number of the 'New and Improved' emergency services, replacing the old 999. The 'New and Improved' emergency services promise nicer ambulances, faster response times and better-looking driver

Type that number into the dialer on an Android phone.

      • Like the Man in the Van. Your driver is hired on how they look in a singlet.

      • Remember the 3 second pause between the 5 and the 3.

  • Almost impossible to put someone on hold whilst holding the receiver in the crook of your neck
