      that's a different deal

  • You must have Optus cable (or an Optus direct connection) to your property to take advantage of this deal. On check availabilty at your service addresss I get "Unfortunately you are not able to be serviced via the Optus Cable or Optus Direct networks"

    • -1

Beware, optus cable dies about 4 hours into a blackout, so you won't be able to call out. Not recommended for people who need 100% reliability calling emergency services, or premises with back-to-base burglar alarms.

Apparently the signal repeaters are powered by a battery, which is in a cable pit near the repeater. The batteries only last for so long.

Sigh. Thats 3 new offers that have come available in the last 2 weeks that beat the one I took up (which is still waiting on Telstra tech to connect) x.x

  • +2

    50gb includes uploads as well.

    • +2

Most ISP's include uploads these days :(

      All started with Bigpong :@

      tpg don't, exetel don't

  • Yair, Optus are pretty good at dealing combos. I feel these could be more compelling though, with S =0.5 TB, M =1 TB and L =2 TB sizes, for $50, $70 and $110, respectively.

70/month would blaze the comp were it to include such an allotment^ +coupled with 6 gb via Timeless mobile. - Would justify the contract in signing with Optus Cable.

Remember, Optus' retail arm (Exetel), $50 a month buys one terabyte-ANZAC promo '12, so this may well be viable-a refresh of plan structure.

    • +4

      "Optus' retail arm" ???

      • Whoops Optus' wholesale channel/partner. My bad; And, you'd only get ADSL product through them (non Cable HFC).
Were a major to eventually takeover Exetel, it was thought more likely to be an Optus, than either iiNet or Telstra, as one used to glean from his blog (CEO Linton) he had rather a distaste for the usual predators.

When you plough through the labyrinthine T&C of Optus deals you get the whiff of ideas cooked up by kiasu sales people. If there is any slight advantage in an Optus deal, it will usually be wiped out in a short time by technological advances. That's why 24 months is an eternity to be tied down.

    • +1

Yep. Between them and Telstra they've could probably write a novel to compete with War and Peace.

Alas, I prefer long, clear and details T&C to short, confusing ones like TPG.

    • +2

For people unaware what "kiasu" means, it's derived from a Chinese dialect which directly translates to "afraid to lose", or rather to be be risk averse; generally used in Singaporean culture. :)

      • Apparently kiasu is now in the OED. It certainly is in wikipedia. BTW anybody got a link to online Mr. Kiasu cartoons?

  • Why no price on title and no direct link? Here is the link:

edit: Someone fixed the direct link now..

  • Optus cable has a limited service area.

Also 50Gb is not enough for anyone a bit tech savvy these days, and I don't like being locked into 24 month contracts regardless.

If you need more, TPG offers $59.99 for unlimited Internet and home phone rental available on 6 month contract.
    http://www.tpg.com.au/products_services/home-phone-bundle

You can add unlimited Local Calls, Standard National Calls to Landlines, 100 International Minutes Per Month, & a Wi-Fi Modem Router for an extra $10 a month.

    • but not free calls to mobiles.

      • Ah yeah, and neither does this optus deal.

  • The NBN will be available for maybe 10% of city dwellers in ~12 month's time.

Before you sign up to this deal, with its 24-month contract, check to see if you are in the lucky 10% who will get NBN. NBN could be significantly cheaper than this deal, e.g. Exetel's $35/month for 50GB NBN plan will leave you with $25/month for VOIP calls, and that's a LOT of calls with MyNetFone or Pennytel.

  • 1 Optus at $60 = line rental, free local calls, national calls, free modem and 50GB internet

this deal is good if you are a primary phone user and light internet user

2 TPG at $70 = line rental, free local calls, natinal calls, unlimited internet, free modem and $100 oversea calls credit

this deal is good if you are a heavy phone and Net user.

    • does the TPG deal include uploads?

      • Well it's unlimited…

and, the other TPG plans that are not unlimited do not count uploads as part of your quota.

        • ok, thanks!

    • there is a difference between optus & tpg voice services. tpg's uses a crappy voip service and you have to waive your csg (no faxes, back to base alarms etc). optus uses a traditional pstn and probably comes with a csg (i haven't checked).

      • Not quite, Optus will connect your home phone through their cable, that's what they did when I signed up a few years ago. As I pointed out above, your ability to make or receive calls ends about 4 hours into a blackout, so if they have a csg, it must be somewhat limited. Telstra at least have diesel generators at their major exchanges, don't know about the smaller ones.

I haven't used TPG's voice services, but telephone via Optus cable wasn't crash hot either. I had to get them out to fix mine, I could hear an AM radio station quietly through my phone - even during dialtone.

  • nice deal but I really need free calls to mobiles included.

    • I don't think you'll see unlimited free mobile calls in any low-priced bundle.

Pennytel's "Endless Lite" PennySim gives you "Free~ Standard National voice calls to landlines & mobiles", where "~Fair Use Policy applies". That costs $35/month, giving you an idea of what it actually costs to supply such a service (Pennytel are believed to be one of the lowest-cost providers). Add (50GB cable) or (line rental + 50GB ADSL2) to that, and you are up around the $90 - $100 mark, and that's with the absolute lowest-cost providers. Expect any bundle containing all these features to cost at least $90, as the companies offering bundles aren't usually price-competitive with the "absolute lowest-cost providers".

      • yeah I know. I'm still on an $89 optus bundle with free mobile.

I would just like the same deal at a lower price.

  • i think its wrong how optus is advertising this product as free broadband. its not technically free you have to pay for additional service, it should really be called bonus home broadband, not free home broadband. they've been advertising it on radio and tv offering free broadband but not clearly explaining customers have to pay for another product.

    • I agree with you, the marketers of the world have gradually changed the meaning of the word "free" to mean something more like "reduced cost" or "with bonus something". How can we search for truely free (i.e. gratis) deals, when free means so many other things?
