Drive a Large SUV? Forget High Fuel Prices You Might Have a New Problem

News reaches Australian shores of a new enemy of the polluting SUV.
Tyre Extinguishers might be targeting you, so best to lock your gas-guzzling baby away safely at night.
Will this really be a thing here with all the cameras & home security everywhere?
Time will tell I guess.

You can also burn down your neighbours house to stop them using electricity….

    • +9

Or burn down your neighbors themselves so they stop using your oxygen … oh wait … fire uses oxygen …

    • There is such thing as renewable energy but there is no such thing as renewable diesel/petrol

      • +3

        There are Bio-Diesels though…

      • -1

but there are renewable humans, even covid don't make a dent on the 7 billions!!

  • +51

I hope they are lucky enough to meet the fists of the SUV owners.

    • +14

I'd pay to see that video on YouTube. Well I'd sit through the ads anyway. Actually I use Adblock, but I'd contribute to the view count which really helps with the algorithm.

    • I’m assuming it’s a USA thing. In which case, I hope the response is “mostly peaceful” to these turds. How dare they. Can’t wait to see the livestream.

I’m going to assume they’re veganazis too. So many unhinged people walk this earth.

      • +1

Based on the British spelling of “tyre” rather than “tire”, I don’t believe this is USA based.

      • +6

        Def not USA.
They don't have tyres, they have tires.
And by the double yellow line at the kerb, it is probably UK. Very few countries use yellow markings.
As well, the domain is registered in Nassau, they have used a domain blocking service to hide their identity and all emails go to riseup.
It's great that an organisation that is supposedly for the good of people is encouraging people to be criminals.
Imagine if a Dr owned a target car, and was called to a traffic emergency in the middle of the night, only to find flat tyres.
It's a shame that the injured pedestrian, a member of riseup, was knocked down (and eventually died) while letting air out of a random SUV. The Dr couldn't get to ER in time.

        • +2

I drive a 4x4 and park it on the street. I also have a pager that can go off 24x7 for road crash rescue with VICSES.

        • To be fair: doctors aren't called to a traffic emergency.

Now.. if you were saying that a surgeon was on call and got called in to a hospital that's another matter (but you're not typically going to be called in to theatre like that… maybe more an issue for a remote/rural specialist being called in to consult or perform surgery).

I'm curious about how the whole flat tire thing would play out, is this bogeyman getting people to deflate all tyres? Or just one?

          • +1

            @ArjaytheGuy: That was the intention.
The Dr is now a reconstructive surgeon.
I feel for the guys in the SES as well.
And having dealt with members of riseup before, when the danger of similar irresponsible actions was discussed, you are greeted with a smug, arrogant expression of disbelief, along with the comment "That's never going to happen. The odds are stacked against it."
The same logic gives them the freedom to ride their pushies through red lights.

      • +10

Wouldnt be the USA, they'd get shot instantly ..

        • +2

          Equalizer plus.

        • +1

          Highly unlikely.

      • +1

I don't want it to be mostly peaceful, roll out that 2nd amendment boys 🤣

  • +23

Just put a Tyre Extinguisher sticker on your car. They will think you're just a hypocrite member.

    • +1

      "I'm undercover bro"

      • Strategy confirmed:

        (Tips from the site)

        • Work under cover of darkness.
        • Bring some friends. Split into pairs to avoid conspicuously large groups.
  • -5

    elon has fixed it.
    dw

  • +5

Fill the tyres full of paint or ink, that way they get splattered and marked for easy police identification.

    • +5

Fill the tyre with chlorine gas

      • Maybe mustard or sarin would be better for this type of ‘war on terror(tory)’?

    • Fill them with cement and problem solved.

      • Until you hit the brakes.

  • +23

These people are very anti-social, as an older person I find my small suv much better for entry / exit and dodgey hips. This sort of action is irresponsible, think about mothers with small children on very hot days, or heart patients. Frankly I am gob smacked that such an action should be advocated, sounds like Putin's inner circle - no empathy!.

    • -5

Comparing a deflated tyre to war crimes is more than a stretch, I have empathy for those who have lost everything from a war and couldn't give two sh*ts for your dodgey hip.

    • Just stick a hybrid badge off ebay on your car.

      Land Rover Discovery Hybrid.

I probably assume these guys are going around letting out tires on 2WD, small engine pretend SUVs. (Hyundai Venue, Yaris Cross etc)

      • You would think, but even fully electric SUVs are in their sights!

  • +1

Lol. So… they're just targetting everyone so no one can drive?? I'm so confused

Hybrids and electric cars are fair game. We cannot electrify our way out of the climate crisis - there are not enough rare earth metals to replace everyone’s car and the mining of these metals causes suffering. Plus, the danger to other road users still stands, as does the air pollution (PM 2.5 pollution is still produced from tyres and brake pads).

    • +12

Their message seems to be use a bicycle or public transport. Fine maybe in Europe, but not here

      • Or for the elderly/disabled.

This is just dumb all around.

    • Perhaps they don't really believe that the movement will actually be followed, they don't think people will read it and decide to pop any SUV tyres at all, but the point is to spread the meme to make the average person think it could be real and consider buying a greener vehicle instead. Just clever marketing for less polluting vehicles.

      • +14

The greenest vehicle is the one that’s already made. Thinking you can consume your way 0 pollution/emissions is the biggest falsehood.

        • So a second hand Tesla?

          • @buckster: touché my friend.

    • +1

Correct; they're uk-based, bicycle loving, sino-danish, climate activist hippies.

  • +12

At least they spelt tyre correctly
    .

    • You don't know how hard I laughed at this.

  • That’d be annoying, but have both a 12v and a workshop compressor. Also got bicycles with plenty of spare valve should they steal them. Probably make me 20min late for work.

    • +3

And use more electricity to re-pump up the tyres! ha

      • And be too late to cycle to work instead

  • +1

Easily solved with allen key locking valve caps…. a few bucks.

They'll have to bring along the correct size key.

That and if you have an air compressor in the boot…

They'll get tired of doing it, long before you get tired of pumping your tyres back up.

I actually don't think this kind of activism would take off here in Australia.

  • +2

They should go to Toorak every second car is a SUV.

  • Interesting albeit fundamentally illegal concept - surely there are laws around the unlawful tampering of private property and putting others in (potential) danger?

    • +2

      Yes.

That and get caught doing it to the wrong person and they'll rightfully so get a nice beating

  • +7

Chuck her a ddos and she'll be right

  • +6

    I learned something new today.

    How To Spot An SUV
SUVs and 4x4s are easy to recognize because they are much larger than ordinary cars, towering above them and taking up huge amounts of space.
    https://tyreextinguishers.com/how-to-spot-an-suv

    • +5

and taking up huge amounts of space.

yes, low flying aircraft need to be wary of them…

    • +1

Yep, a Nissan Juke totally fits the bill…. Plonkers….

    • +6

This group is clearly started by some hippie who thinks because they live a tiny inconsequential life that everyone else must too

      • +2

I get your point, but we all live a tiny inconsequential life

        • +3

live and let live. Don't go around letting the air out of peoples tyres, which doesn't actually do anything.

There are better ways to get your point across I guess.

      • -2

Driving around in a massive SUV is definitely needless consumption, and is one of many, many many reasons why the planet is going down the gurgler. People doing so should (rightfully) be ashamed of themselves. Sadly though that's just par for the course across many societies in the world, very few people are willing to make minor concessions in their own lives for the benefit of their own children and future generations. Myself included at some level, just not in our nature to put something distant and intangible over our lives right now.

However, endangering people's safety to try and make a point, especially when 'SUVs' is way too big of a class of vehicles (plenty of small/efficient ones too) is not the right approach.

        • +2

"SUV" doesn't equal high fuel consumption. The physical style of a car has no correlation to how much environmental impact that vehicle will have.

Do you see a 6.2L V8 Commodore which is a sedan and think it's a friendly fuel efficient vehicle or you look at a 1.5L Toyota CHR and think it's a horrible beast designed to turn oil into death?

You don't like inefficient vehicles pumping out heaps of fumes and that's great, that doesn't mean you don't like SUV's though and there are plenty of other reasons to not be a fan of them.

          • -1

@ZachBlasphemy: Right, as I said at the end of the post.

The energy/materials involved in manufacturing as well as the consumption (fuel/tyres/etc) on the road is what matters. Large SUVs, as with any large vehicle, are generally bad in this regard.

            • @nigel deborah: Yeah you're right. Excessively large vehicles are using more resources but this doesn't seem like something that can actually change.

The way our registration works for example (in NSW at least) is there's no discount for owning multiple vehicles so we're encouraged to have the one vehicle to do all of our jobs.

            • @nigel deborah: being a large SUV doesn't necessarily make it bad either, it is entirely dependent on what it is used for. sure a large SUV or 4x4 used to pick up kid from school is incredibly wasteful. However more than a few are necessary, whether it is for SES work, farm/contractor work where they actually use the power/weight (e.g. my brother has to be able to tow a seeders, ploughs, large heavy trailers and other farm equipment that would be near impossible in a lighter weight vehicle), yet you will also find that vehicle parked in a residential driveway at least 4 nights a week. luckily for him though if this stupidity ever took hold here he always has compressor anyway.

              • @gromit: Agree, I thought it was implied but certainly it's not needless consumption if there is a valid requirement for it.

That said, the majority of large SUVs (in suburbia) are 2wd and often based on regular vehicle chassis/drivetrain, i.e. do not have any special capability that a smaller vehicle could also meet. People like to say they need the space, but often the boot space isn't that different either.

My point was that unnecessarily large vehicles (of all types) are wasteful, and we should do something about reducing the number of them. Approach in OP not the right way to go about it, but I do think people using these vehicles should feel bad about it.

  • +2

Tyre Extinguishers(tyreextinguishers.com) might be targeting you, so best to lock your gas-guzzling baby away safely at night.

I just let me Rottweiler sleep in the SUV at night with the window half way down…

    • Thanks. I'll be sure to target only SUV's with Rottweilers in them.

  • +7

Aka: quick way to cop a lump of 4x2 up the back of your head.

And (fropanity) me, they even tell people to go after EV’s and Hybrids, but to leave “normal cars” alone.

That is a seriously messed up site. So much so that I think it is a complete and utter troll site set up to get gullible idiots to do gullible idiot things.

    • +11

I suspect you haven’t had the displeasure of working with too many “activists”?
A lot of them are overly emotional perma-children that base all their decisions around feelings and “morals” that are learnt from the internet.

gullible idiots to do gullible idiot things.

Then again, perhaps you have had that displeasure…

  • +2

This is how Magnavolt from Robocop started

  • +2

Seems like everyone is starting their own campaign nowadays, next up would opening up an SUV and engine swap for Prius engine.

  • the 'problem' I see with this is that the subcompact/compact suv is just this generations camry/corolla

eg. a nissan dualis/xtrail is just a pulsar and pintara/r31 skyline whaetver moved forward 25yrs

    they serve the same role

i do get that people may not like the klugers landcruisers but without the market providing a like sized full EV with the infrastructure to support then what do you expect consumers to do?

    • I can’t imagine a current tech EV being a suitable substitute for a landcruiser or prado. Maybe a school run prado or Kluger if you had the cash, but serious work vehicle, no.

  • +7

There is another action group - the fart blockers.

Sneaking around inserting corks just before somone lets it rip.

    • +24

      sign me up

oh wait you said corks nvm

    • +1

Could just be me, but I'd probably choose a fart over trying to insert a cork in a stranger's butt

      • Cigarette lighter liberates that methane.

    • There's no cork strong enough to block my farts

  • +1

Green terrorism will only increase i guess

  • +2

So they slash the tyres, which then need to be replaced. According to this article it takes 31 litres oil per tyre to make a new one..

    https://www.drive.com.au/news/tyre-prices-set-to-soar-in-aus…

Clearly a group of the worlds greatest thinkers.

Wonder if this knob in Adelaide is one
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-19/man-charged-with-dama…

    • +6

They don't slash them. They deflate them.

      • +3

Causing people to have to arrange for roadside assistance to pump them up, wasting more energy and fossil fuels.

        • +1

But they are sending a loud message …

Just like those splaying paint on fur-coats … (although the "donor" is already dead)

          • +3

            @LFO:

But they are sending a loud message …

That they want a punch in the face?

            • @brendanm:

That they want a punch in the face?

              If they catch them.

Lazy enough to free park on the streets, lazy enough to never venture out and never leave the couch in front of the TV.

              • @LFO:

Lazy enough to free park on the streets, lazy enough to never venture out and never leave the couch in front of the TV

I don't think you understand what the word lazy means.

                • @brendanm:

I don't think you understand what the word lazy means.

                  Yes I do.

Someone toooooo lazy to go and park in a parking lot.
Paying if needed but better than plonking their car in a public road.

Roads are for transit, vehicle movement. For everyone.
                  Parking lots are for parking.

                  • -1

@LFO: Hahahaha it is not lazy to park on a street, if street parking is allowed. You are hilarious.

                    • @brendanm:

Hahahaha it is not lazy to park on a street, if street parking is allowed

                      Yes, it is super lazy.
It is lazier to dump the truck on the street than carefully park inside your garage/carport.

Why do you think people do park on the streets then?
Because they are TOO lazy to park properly.

Again: streets are for movement, for fluency; parking lots are for stationary objects.

                      • -1

                        @LFO:

Because they are TOO lazy to park properly.

Hahaha, perhaps it's because they have other things in their garage? Have more than 1 or 2 cars? Plenty of reasons.

                        • @brendanm:

Hahaha, perhaps it's because they have other things in their garage?

                          Garages are for vehicles.
                          Storage is for other things.
Too lazy to get proper storage?

Have more than 1 or 2 cars?

Then a bigger garage is needed.
                          Too lazy to organize/build one?

                          Plenty of reasons.

Yes, being lazy is the most definitive reason.

But don't take my word for it.
For a week, for seven days park your vehicle inside your garage. Neatly and properly parked. Each one of those seven days.

Then, after that week, when back parking on the streets reflect and accept: It was just too much work And that is when the lazy thing rises its head again.

Nothing criminal with being lazy for certain activities. I'll have mine as well. The important bit is to accept and recognize laziness. Acceptance is the key.

                          • @LFO: I see you are also on the gold coast. I hope I never have the displeasure of meeting you in real life.

              • @LFO: You think the only people who park on the streets are lazy?

I park on the street so my kids can have sole use of the driveway for playing basketball

I park on the street so my kids can have sole use of the driveway for playing basketball

I guess taking the kids to a sports club, sports field or to a park with a basketball ring is too much to ask?

Your neighbors must love the sound of a bouncing ball.
                  Delightful suburbia.
                  NOT!

Garage is for my vehicle I'm restoring and camping equipment + kids bikes etc.

You sound like a HORRIBLE neighbour. I'm glad my neighbours are all awesome.

What happens if someone dies because they can’t get to hospital in time due to a flat tyre. For god sake think thinks through before taking irresponsible action. You may find yourself being charged with murder by misadventure.

You may find yourself being charged with murder

      LMAO!
This is Australia country of bleedin hearts.. they'd probably get more trouble for letting down the tyres.

    • +4

That's what ambulance's are for. But based on the current response times around the country you're better off taking an Uber and cheaper! Without forking out $450 if you don't have ambulance cover.

An Australian magistrate would not record a conviction, give them a $20 fine and make the victims pay costs.
