    $366?!

seems extremely expensive for what you get.

Sounds like you never looked at thunderbolt accessories prices :) very, very different than USB C stuff :D

      • That's correct. Is there anything to justify the extra $$?

        • +2

          130W

transfer speeds, and power output. Thunderbolt 3 is 40gb vs USB C at 10gb. Depends what you're wanting to do as to whether it is worth it.

        • Our office rolled TB docks out to deal with triple screens or very high resolution setups.

There are those displaylink USB-C docks, but they reduce framerates or some dodgy method to give you a higher resolution than USB-C has the bandwidth for.

So it boils down to higher bandwidth, much higher for things like that.

I've bought a couple of those at our business for over $500.

      • Same (mostly HP and ALogic). $366 is a relative bargain!

      • I'm at work looking at 1 of these right now.

Just an FYI for Mac owners who are dreaming a single cable dock to drive multiple displays, mac’s don’t support multiple displays through a single port. Only thunderbolt displays that can be daisy chained, which I frankly don’t know of any (that’s reasonably priced).

    • It just requires one of those screens coming out of the dock to be connected with USB-C. PITA that it doesn't just work but it kinda does

      • Yeah basically shows you have to have a thunderbolt monitor, which then you can use it without a dock to daisy chain to do 2 monitors anyway. And better of buying a regular USB C dock and not shelling out for thunderbolt stuff.

Disgrace on macs, blows my mind how people don’t complain about this way more. My shitty work Dell with no GPU and 10th gen Intel CPU can do this lol

    • I think if the dock supports the DisplayLink driver you can have multiple displays from a single port right?

      • Pretty sure that doesn’t work either. Mac’s don’t support MST. It’s a joke considering how much they cost and how capable they actually are…

    • One of our guys had this with his intel mac .. kinda worked but the config was dicey with how you used the cables.. (basically DP over USBC and 1x HDMI was the config) he got a new M1 mac and now it works for a single display .. the second one in the same setup just flicks on and off… so kind think dell and mac are unsupported.

      • Yes, but first scenario you describe is basically having a thunderbolt display, which again, you don’t need a dock than. You can daisy chain thunderbolt displays.

And no, it’s Mac’s not supporting MST, it has nothing to do with dock being Dell unfortunately. No dock can do multiple displays if you are not using a TB connection to the first.

        • As a new MacBook owner (M1 Mac), I’m considering buying one of these for my home set up. Anyone know if they’re worth it? https://www.amazon.com.au/CalDigit-Thunderbolt-Docking-Stati…

          • @m00seTheC0wSnake: If you are asking about multiple monitor set up through this, it’s still a No.
            From the seller:
Hello Raymund, you can connect dual extended 4K 60Hz monitors or a single 5K 60Hz monitor to this dock. However, if you are using an M1 chip MacBook/Mac Mini, the dock can only support a single monitor due to a port limitation (each port can only support a single display).

As a dock? Probs okay, never used tbh. Unless you need the bandwidth for something specific, i don’t see a reason to but a thunderbolt anything.

            • @Larsson: Thanks for the advice. My main use case is connecting to a AW3821DW, and occasionally an extra USB-A device like an external hard drive or DVD reader/writer. Sounds like this Caldigit is overkill.

@m00seTheC0wSnake: Yeah just get a cheap USB-C dongle with Power Delivery.
I would probably pay a bit more for one that has 4K@60 support for that monitor. You don't want it dropping to 30Hz.

              • @m00seTheC0wSnake: Agreed with @coxymla, caldigit or anything TB is overkill. Just get a usb C dock, and on top of that advice, I’d probs get a good USB C one, like again from Dell or sth. Because those tiny hubs usually have bunch of compromises…

          • @m00seTheC0wSnake: I have an intel chipset Macbook 2020 and I use Windows via bootcamp along with MacOS. I bought a TS4 (Thunderbolt 4 dock) and I am not complaining. Paid the extra dollars to future proof it. I use 2 x 27 inch Dell 4K screens and it works fine on Mac side.

            Link: http://shop.caldigit.com/asia/TS4

            • @fade: Ooh, didn’t realise there was a Thunderbolt 4 version! Thanks for the heads up. I’ll hope online and check out some reviews.

  • Great dock!

  • If i have a non thunderbolt laptop and bought this, will i then be able to buy an Egpu and connect it thru this?

    • +3

This connects to the computer via Thunderbolt - it doesn't add Thunderbolt to the computer

      • ah thanks. i thought i added thunderbolt capability.

This dock is one of the only TB docks that can also work as a USB-C dock.
I'm using mine with a Legion 5 Pro and it works fine, although you only get 65W charge.

    • It’s shocking how TB was marketed as fast, but they fail to mention how it’s usually backwards incompatible, unless you look at some niche product that’s insanely expensive.

Apparently TB and USB C controllers are different and you need both to make it compatible with both. Basically like buying 2 products lol. I am so salty about this…

    • If you dont mind me asking, what monitors are you outputting to? I have 2 4k monitors I'd like to connect to

Also, is it the current Legion 5 Pro? Just trying to figure out what docks I should be looking at for mine

      Thanks in advance

      • Pretty sure you won't be able to drive 2x 4K monitors from a non-Thunderbolt laptop.

        I am driving 2x 1080p only. 2x 1440p might work?

I have the L5P with a 5800H and a 3070. The USB-C port on the back has DP and PD. I don't think there is a newer one yet.

        • Thanks, that's the same as I have

          Oh well, the search continues

  • From the sales rep

"Unfortunately docking stations are not available in stock, there is 3 months lead time on it"

  • I have one of these and have 2x 165hz monitors connected. It wont run both of them at 165hz. One at 165hz and the other only goes up to 120hz.
Other than that, its a great dock.

  • can we use this dock for other notebook or Dell only?

    • Will work fine on any laptop but might not charge it.

      • I'm yet to find a device it doesn't charge, we have well over 100 of these things in the office connecting various devices from Surface Pros to Macbook Pros, I think it even works for DeX

        • I have a HP Zbook that is pretty finicky about what it will charge off of.

I have also had lots of Dells in the past that wouldn't charge off Lenobo TB3 docks.

    • Works with my HP EliteBook and MacBook pro as well

  • I have the first gen with extra audio ports. works okay until you switch input on the monitor to a different computer, when you switch back it wouldn't work, have to re-plug the thunderbolt cable.
according to forums, it seems to have a loud fan issue. I haven't experienced it yet.
power button doesn't work for a lenovo laptop.
