Yeah it's the times we live in. At least it's not $2200 like some other chair manufacture…

  • Waiting for a 20% discount

    • It's been 24 minutes now. How you wearing?

      • +7

Pants and shirt in the normal position, hopefully change later tonight.

Just wanted to know from people who have purchased this chair, is it really worth $900? Are these super comfy? How is the comfort level after 6 to 8hrs of continuous use?

    • I've gone to the showroom and tried them all. It really depends on your body in terms of will they be comfy. They are worth the money for quality. A series 2 for instance at $855 isn't too far from the premium chair cost at office works and arguably will last longer and rattle less.
It also depends on features. The Herman miller chairs for instance lock out on different recline angles and tilt in a different way. Steelcase chairs work differently. Most of the steelcase chairs have a curved base which I prefer where as many other chairs are flat and/or have more cushioning than I prefer.

    • Yes they are. I had a Herman Miller aeron at work for over 6 years, and think that this and the Aeron are different, but both really fantastic chairs. I prefer the seat of the Steelcase as it moves more and has less pressure on the back of my legs. I ended up buying the Gesture just because I get a budget from work to buy them. But after trying the leap, I can say there isn't much at all in it difference wise.

I've had 2 previous office works chairs that lasted max 2 years. meanwhile the Leap and Aeron at work have lasted over 6 years and still feel fantastic, and are obviously much more sturdy and supporting with more adjustments.

    • Not worth the RRP, but these chairs will last you a lifetime. I’ve tried all these chairs found they are overhyped

    • how you get it for 580?

      • +1

No headrest and 20% off black friday I'm assuming

    • +1

That's frustrating they don't give it to you in the box. Makes transport awkward and increases the chances of damage getting it home.

This or Secret Labs Titan Evo 2022?

    • +1

for your back, definitely not secret labs. no lumbar support in those chairs is a big deal imo

    • +2

had a secret lab it was okay with the limited time i sat on it outside work, but when i had to wfh it was causing a lot of shoulder and back pain.

went to steelcase showroom to try these chairs and literally all of them felt much better than my secret lab. ended up getting the gesture as it just felt better for me.

thinking of selling the secret lab as its just sitting in a spare room however the build quality is pretty bad too its falling apart after using it daily for work so don't think i'll get much for it.

    • Depends how much you're using them. If more than 2 hours at a time. Go this chair for sure. Got rid of my secret labs after starting working from home, those things are horrid if sitting on for more than a couple hours. These i can sit on all day and still feel great.

I was looking for a chair and was set on a chair that was really out of my price range but I don’t want to get back problems and cause $$$$$ down the track.

Before I put the down payment for the chair I went to Officework to get some stock paper… swung by the chairs and found this one…

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/matrix-mes…

Tried it there and surprisingly it was very comfy and my lumbar had great support and because of the pivot it moved around when I moved around. So for $189 bought it and haven’t looked back since.

Checked the review afterwards and geez there are a few people that gave it 1 star that didn’t even RTFM or watch the YT videos for assembly. Not one issue on my end and been using it for 3 weeks.

    • it's baffling how many people cannot follow simple instructions to put together furniture.

The problem I have with officeworks chairs is that they work great for 2-3 years then you need to replace them because bottom cushion gets flat and uncomfortable or textile gets worn and ripped etc.. so I end up spending ~$150 over and over again

      • I hear you… but the chair I wanted is four figures.

        https://livingedge.com.au/chairs/office-chairs/herman_miller…

So if It last two to three years and I don’t have any back problems which so far so good. I am still ahead.

Even better if I can find an ex commercial Mirra 2 for a discount.

        • Be sure to try a brand new Mirra before trying ex commercial. If it's old enough it can loose some support. It can be fixed but it's pricey.

          • +1

@Drogo: Don’t worry… I am that person that stares through the window looking at the chair most days as I pass the Living Edge store. Tried it countless times…

      • To be fair Pago do offer 15 years warranty as well and the terms are generous.

    • In a year or less, these become very uncomfortable as the foam will sag. The chair only offers very basic support and adjustments, so for sure if that's all you are after you can buy any old cheapo chair for that. I have 2 cheapo chairs in my garage right now that I have gone through trying to save money. Ended up just buying a good chair though, and the difference is night and day if you use then 8 hours a day 5 days a week or more. Night and day.

      • It goes up and down, the chair tilts back and forth, the back rest goes back and forth and also up and down.

Can’t think of anything more to adjust?

        • +1

Seat pan forward and back. Arm rests left, right, forward and back. Different tilt settings.

        • Lumbar is a big one, depth of seat or ability to extend/shorten, reclining and recline range, arm rest positions.
This is a good start, then with steelcase you get various other items that it does by itself based on your usage/pressure.

          • @onlinepred: Do arm rest work well for the additional costs? I just find them always in the way… banging into my desk or wall. I normally just go for a stretch every hour to stretch my arms out.

            • @jlogic: I use my chair arms all the time now, my old Aeron didn't have much adjust-ability which meant they always hit the desk, but with the steelcase gesture I got, the arms have so much adjust-ability they can go further back and inwards etc, so it's easy to find a place that your elbows can rest on and fit in front of the desk. It's why adjust-ability is so important, as not everyone will have their chair at the same position as others.

    • +1

I've used 2 new and different model office works chairs recently and both of them loose some of their pressure randomly when first sitting down. I'm not a big person. So I'm forever re-adjusting the height.

    This one is great.

After taking to my physio he says the most important part is a thick cushion, he says you can't maintain the right posture if you bum gets uncomfortable. Look for at least 9cm, there is a lot of force applied through your arse.

    • There's different thoughts on this. Steelcase specifically use thin padding cause there's research suggesting it's better. Herman millers suspension design also replicates thin padding imo. Thick padding allows you to get lazy and drift away from your sit bones and neutral spine. Thick padding can also put pressure on sensitive areas.
Standing up regularly helps alleviate discomfort.

  • +1

Whilst I understand there's a difference between, being able to afford one of these chairs, vs. attempting to determine whether these chairs are "worth" the money.

If you happen to fall into the latter category, i.e. can afford, but cannot justify the price. There are a few things to consider, your back and posture, the pain and the money that goes into addressing (not fixing) back issues can cost much more. Secondly, how much money do you want to waste on lower quality chairs?

If it's justified, and you will be using your chair regularly (even more so during work activities), then if possible, buy right once.

    • 100% agree with you, but its hard to buy without trying all of the "famous" chairs. I dont think there is a place that stock steelcase locally in BNE

      • Ark environments sell in Brisbane. Try and get in contact with them with trying out some chairs.

  • Has anyone really compared these and secret lab chairs given the price to more cheaper options I E. The type you'd get from costs for $260-400 ? Is the premium in price felt in the ergonomics and comfort (materials aside i.e. if leather)?

    • +1

I've personally compared to a secret labs myself, and this chair takes a massive dump all over in terms of long term comfort. also had one of the $200 officeworks chairs before that. They're good for about 6 months, then become pain.

    • I have a Secret Labs and honestly i can't get comfy in it. Regrats.

  • People complain about the "Extremity" of the cost of a good office chair, then pay for it in due course with back surgery later in life..

  • I probably get this after the release and reviews of the Steelcase Karman.

  • I've had one of these over 6 months now

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/haworth-al…

Pretty good for the price comfort wise. Build quality is not super premium because it is easy to put together and sometimes the sticks to adjust the seat fall out of the chair. But once you find the right setting. Pretty good. However if you have another 5 large to spend, would consider a more premium chair.

    • I have both the haworth fern and zody the fern is brilliant

      • I should have sprung for a Fern but couldn't try it anywhere so was a risk in lockdown

        • Officeworks told me If I wasn't happy with it within 30 days I could return prob should have done that with the zody and had 2 ferns

          • @chris666: Officeworks couldn't commit to me that they'd take it back after I unboxed and put it together! I was pretty miffed about that.

  • Not sure if this helps but I've purchased an ex-office, Steelcase Think for $150 (no arms, 2015 ship date) and I'm very happy with the quality of the chair. The reclining mechanism is awesome! Wish I could find one with arms though.

  • Got this without headrest for about $600 back in October. Great chair, no complaints.

Only qualm is that I really want to add the headrest now, and Steelcase AU don't seem to sell them. Anyone got a hook-up to find them?

    • Call them

      • Already tried via email, and they said they can't supply it. Do you think calling them would have different results?
