Good deal
Amazing price I have this setup from 3 years ago perfect gaming setup combo on a budget.
Dude same, its amazing price and combo, but damn, had it since 2019, guess I was too early :C
Great value
Wow very nice!
wow fantastic for a budget build
I paid this for just the cpu 2 years ago, great price
Great deal, and solid mobo for VRM. I paid roughly this much for a 1600AF + lesser mobo a little over a year ago.
So the combo is cheaper than just the CPU!
Board is around 95, 2 M2 ports, 4 sata, 4 dimm plus the usual USB etc. Reasonable overclocking mATX
The board alone is one of the better for those doing piecemeal upgrades and re-using 1st Gen processors, and it can take current.
too good of a deal to pass up
Very good stuff. If you get this though, make sure to do a really good job with the thermal paste and cooler- this cpu runs a bit hot.
I went from running about 58 idle to 40 idle with a cooler change. Wasnt too bothered with the 58 but just wanted it quieter
what cooler do you use?
Be quiet Pure rock 2….I think that's what it's called. Basically the be quiet version of the coolermaster 212
@Fergy1987: ok thanks! I have the same cpu and its running about 60 odd degrees idle and 80 something when playing games
@YahooChess: Doesn't sound right that's too high. You might want to reconsider repasting. Mine goes down to 40deg when idle after hours of gaming, some cheapo paste and stock cooler
@selphie: yeah i've been testing mine and its running mid 50s with just a couple of chrome tabs, onenote and spotify; so abit better than i though
@YahooChess: Yeah, as Selphie said, you should repaste. It is reasonably easy to do if you've never done it- watch a youtube tutorial.
My advice which I have gathered doing it like 15 times to try and fix my sister's overheating 3600 is
-A single pea sized blob in the centre is the best "pattern" because it minimises potential air pockets
-Align the cooler and CPU really well because you do not want to put it on and have to take it off, this can again create air pockets
-Thermal paste brand is inconsequential. Getting $30 liquid metal paste will not help if you have poor adhesion, air pockets etc. Even if everything is controlled for I doubt you'd see more than 3 degrees of difference.
-Make sure to really screw down the heatsink. Go to where it is tight, and do maybe 25% more. The stock AMD cooler is miles better than those plastic intel things. Also, you can go into your BIOS and force the fan to spin at 100% all the time- for me the noise is non existent relative to other ambient noises.
-HW monitor is a decent program for checking your temps
-The 3600 has some weird behavior where it increases its clock speed at 5 second intervals and you will see the temperature jump from say 40 to 50. This is normal and you can consider at having an average temperature of 45 ish.
a really nice (quiet) and ozbargain friendly cooler is the gammaxx400, i think the evo is a bit pricer so worth considering
https://www.amazon.com.au/DEEP-COOL-GAMMAXX400V2-GAMMAXX-400…i "downgraded" from a 240mm AIO for one of these and not only is it quieter but it runs cooler
even when i removed undervolt it was still cooler
btw you can always just undervolt these CPUs as well which helps with heat dramatically, i never tried this with the stock cooler but it might be all you need to do to quieten it
@desync: I picked up one of these GAMMAXX 400's from Umart https://www.umart.com.au/product/deepcool-gammaxx-400-v2-led…
I also swapped the fan for an Arctic P12 since the GAMMAXX blue LED could not be turned off and the Arctic fan speed is adjustable and quiet enough
Pretty happy with it, keeps the R5 3600 CPU at mid 30's for an everyday youtube and browsing temperature. Paste was just Arctic MX-4.
What video card would be best suited to this?
Good for budget gaming, but also depends if what you play is mainly gpu bound. I would recommend 6600,6600XT,3060,3060Ti and probably just fine with 3070 (if you mainly play 1440p making game gpu bound).
I have a 3060Ti with this 3600 and it runs like a dream
I’m using it with a 3070ti works great. Highly recommend this cpu and mobo combo. Fantastic value.
Aren't they all pcie.4 when the board and cpu is only pcie.3?
Go second hand and buy a cheaper 20xx series.
Yeh but theres only a few % in terms of performance diff between pcie 4 and 3.. So it's not noticeable if you use it on a older pcie port.
I'm using it with a 6700xt and I currently see no reason to upgrade my CPU. I get excellent performance and I'm always GPU bound.
Board does not seem to support 5000 series hmm
still looks great value though?https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450M-MORTAR-MAX/support#sup…
It does according to this.
It does and it is one of a smaller number of B450 motherboards that supports BIOS flashback (ability to flash BIOS without CPU).
However, it is still limited AMD's nasty practice. AMD blocked PCIe gen 4 support in the BIOS. While you do get PCIe gen 3 support "from the CPU" (despite the CPU can support PCIe gen 4 - AMD just blocked that from BIOS), B450 chipset itself supports PCIe gen 2. If possible, got for at least B550.
Gotta upgrade em all. Price pushing is the way of life for these manufacturers, $300-330 for a 5600g means you gotta push things here and there for a "competitive marketplace".
At least thunderbolt is growing to more than just intel platforms these days, small steps I guess
So AMD disabled pci4.0 on a heep of main boards then later produced a budget video card that needs pci4.0 to run properly (6500xt). makes sense.
Thanks for the explanation and tradeoff.
I've heard that pcie gen 4 is important for GPUs like 6500xt.
Would you say missing pcie gen 4 is a no go for the future?
6500XT needs PCIe gen 4, no other card does. Also 6500XT is a bad card anyway. Do not buy things for "future proof" or be prepared to pay 3 times more just to get DDR5 because it is the future (it is not worth it right now). Either you have the money to get the most expensive thing because you just do not care or just get a good "now" combo like this one.
brought one. thanks pm. just wondering where can I get the cheapest GPU for this combo. I am building a server.
For many servers you won't require any video card.
Just saw a video on Linus tech tips where they installed TrueNAS on a very similar setup with no video card. They plugged in the hard drive to another computer with video briefly to install the OS, then back into the headless server setup and pulled the IP address off the router and logged in through a web browser.
Should work similarly with Open Media Vault or various other sever OS's.
Or just plug in any old video card you can find, even temporarily, as you can largely most servers headless, even Windows Server.
On many servers you could also install docker/portainer or similar and then install a docker image that runs a GUI, or various apps that use noVNC to provide a webGUI, e.g. many images built on top of https://hub.docker.com/r/jlesage/baseimage-gui
such as
https://jlesage.github.io/docker-apps/Many more web GUI Docker images available from https://fleet.linuxserver.io/
For more info on making a similar docker image for Mozilla Thunderbird, see https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-remo…
Or get a full version of Ubuntu desktop accessible via noVNC/web browser such as https://hub.docker.com/r/fullaxx/novnc
Technically speaking, all these approaches run a vnc server such as x11vnc, then novnc is a vnc client that views the vnc output and outputs it as http/s on port 8080 or a port of your choosing that docker will route to port 8080 inside the docker image.
If you have several of these docker images running, you can either set up a reverse proxy that will redirect port number to subdomains (e.g. ubuntu.myserver.com, thunderbird.myserver.com), or you can run an app called Heimdall (https://hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/heimdall) that can present your apps as icons so you access www.myserver.com, see the Heimdall screen, click on the app icon and get redirected to your web GUI for TrueNAS, Open media vault, MakeMKV, Jellyfin Media Server, Kodi or Plex Media Server, etc.
The Linus Tech Tips video is https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=boKmZKTKXHc
Watch from about 10.25 to see them install TrueNAS and access it via a browser with no video card.
thanks for you suggestion. You save me 100 bucks.
I did a research, this MB can boot without a GPU with supported BIOS
https://www.msi.com/blog/with-upcoming-amd-processors-and-co…
There's a Aero 1030 going to $125 on ebay from Harris tech … or you can try for a cheap used one just enough to get display out..
Probably better to go Intel instead if you need a GPU
Alternately you could get a better CPU with inbuilt graphics for a little bit more from the same retailer.

Damn that's a good price!
I have this exact same set up since 2019, but if I didn't upgrade back then, I would be on this NOW.
What is a mATX motherboard - is this same as Mini-ITX motherboard measuring 170*170mm ?
Edit.. I just realised it's a micro ATX mobo
great price for a good workhorse CPU and board. honestly probably still holds up well
Oos
Your better off getting the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AMD-Ryzen-5-5600X-4-6GHz-6-Cores…
$335.00 with discount $33.50 to $301.5+free shipping which is only 30$+ on this combo deal and go for a newer motherboard(obviously you'll have to pay extra for this). The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 price point just to close to 5600X atm.The 5600X is a good deal better than the 3600
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-hierarchy,4312.htmlA decent b550 mono will be $100, so a total of $130. 50% more expensive for 20% extra performance, plus pcie gen 4, not worth it IMO
I don't understand, this is cpu and mobo for $40 cheaper than only the cpu you are saying. This deal is better.
I got a message on Friday saying:
“ We are sorry to advise that we are not able to fill your order as we are not able to get stock at this time.
Although we did have a committed order with our Distributor they have advised us now that this order cannot be filled with no current ETA.In such circumstances we believe it is best to refund your order in full. ”
What a headache… I’ve already purchased case, SSD, GPU, Ram to go with this … and now the rug gets pulled. Not. Happy.
Thanks for the mystery neg. I assume everyone else received theirs?
There. Gave a + to counter the mystery neg. Thanks for sharing your experience. It was an awesome deal though but can understand your frustration.
Nice price!
