  • Ordered one yesterday morning, was marked as April 29 for delivery, but now it's coming tomorrow. :D

    • Did you use both codes? I couldn't get the 7% off code to work, only the 20% one works.

      • Yeah mate, 7% didn't work from the first email I used, but just did a different email for a second code which worked fine.

    • Does your invoice say $229 or $1496?

      • 229 ,,,, I'll take dozen :D

    • Has your order arrived or is en route? Mine says May and I ordered yesterday

      • +1

It's out for delivery at the moment. I also did a seperate order yesterday and that ones also May.

        • Nice, hope you get yours soon!

    • Wow that's crazy.. got it yet?

      • Yup, just took my old monitor off the mount. :)

  • Is there a 38inch version on the way?

    • +4

Waiting for 38" too - its the perfect size

      • Same, am running a 32” and 38”, can’t go to 34” despite how tempting it is

        • May I know why? Personally I think 38 is too big?

          • +3

@Hodlman Sachs: After you go from 34" to 38" you will see. 34" feels cramped in comparison, like its 1.5 monitors. At 38" it feels like two full size monitors, and there is enough horizontal space to work adequately. I always felt 34" was a bit cramped.

          • @Hodlman Sachs: There is no such a thing for a monitor to be too big, unless you do not have the room for it. I have the 38” version, and I wish it to be a bit wider.

          • @Hodlman Sachs: I would definitely go for one of these 38" instead of the one in this deal, screen is already very good quality, but you have larger area to work with:

            AW3821DW

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/684144

            • @jar-unit: The size increase from 34" to 38" is noticeable but not massive, but the difference in picture quality between the two is massive, the AW3821DW would be rubbish in comparision

              • @cille745: I had the aw3420dw before upgrading to the aw3821dw.

Tempted by this deal, but don't think I'd want to go back down in size. Hopefully Dell releases a 38" qd-oled soon, or even 40"

              • @cille745: How and in what situations would the picture quality be superior on the QD-OLED compared to IPS?

Just genuinely asking, as I've seen LG OLEDs TVs and top line Samsung and Sony LCD TVs, and IMO once colour calibrated, the only advantages I can think of are:
                1. LG OLEDs is in very dimly lit rooms and dark backgrounds get deeper blacks.
                2. Viewing angles are better in OLED as the top line Samsung and Sony LCD TVs are VA.
                3. Blooming doesn't exist on LG OLEDs.

I supposed the nature of OLEDs for gaming would also mean better picture response time as well.

These are all nice things, but screen realestate is really important too. If they made a 38" QD-OLED (assuming the rumors of it not burning in are true for normal computer usage) then I would get one.

                I went from a 27" to a 34" to a 38".

34" didn't feel like a major upgrade from my 27" size wise and I still wanted more screen realestate. With the 34" I needed to use my 27" as a secondary monitor. The 38" allows me to run a single monitor without feeling cramped.

                • +1

@Daemos: My comparison was specifically with the AW3821DW, not a high end VA panel like the TV's you're referring to. With QD-OLED the advantages are even greater. In addition to those benefits you pointed out you also get
                  1. Significantly higher colour gamut than anything else on the market
                  2. 1000 nits of peak brightness

Keep in mind that the AW3821DW is more expensive, slower in both refresh rate and response times, lower colour gamut coverage, lower peak brightness, significantly worse contrast as it uses a 800:1 panel with no local dimming and has worse viewing angles I don't think it's too out there to claim that in terms of image quality it's a bit rubbish in comparison

                  • @cille745: Higher colour gamut isn't that useful as most things on the PC including games, the web, etc are mastered for sRGB, so a colour gamut beyond that only provides oversaturated and inaccurate colours. I actually run a driver level sRGB clamp for my AW3821DW abd a colour calibration for sRGB. The only time I disable the clamp and change my colour calibration profile is when I play the only game that supports HDR and I turn on Auto HDR in Windows.

1000 nit brightness isn't that useful outside of HDR content in certain senarios, I have calibrated my screen to 120 nits for day to day use, which is plenty bright.

HDR is becoming more and more popular in games so good HDR performance will be more important in the future.

OLED doesn't mean better picture quality. It's just a form of panel technology. But it does have advantages, but on a properly colour calibrated display, compared to IPS for 99.9% of things those advantages are not useful.

That being said, I would pay good money (more than the AW3423DW's RRP) to have a 38" QD-OLED just to have those features, but the advantages are not worth the loss of screen realestate. This is of course assuming it doesn't burn in, and the panel refresh doesn't wear out the pixels prematurely, which is unlikely given it's sitll OLED but using only one type of subpixel with a quantum dot filter.

                    • @Daemos: I'd imagine most people buying this are planning to regularly consume HDR content, and moving forward support is only going to get better. I've been using FALD monitors since they first came out and I'm looking forward to blooming being a thing of the past, I actually find it more noticeable during desktop usage

          • @Hodlman Sachs: thats what she said…

    • Doubt it, Samsung makes the panels so unless Samsung decides to make a 38" version then no chance for Dell to get a 38" version.

    • +2

Meh of its not 49 inch, its just not on.

  • How safe are OLED monitors to be used as PC monitors given the risk of burn in? I presume higher given PC use has way more static imaging than tv watching?

Would love an OLED computer monitor but not if it ends ups you burn in within a year or two.

    • +3

they have 3 years burn in protection warranty which should give peace of mind!

      • Beyond this you have the options of:

        • dark mode everything
        • lowering the brightness (SDR is mastered for 100 nits, and thankfully this monitored is locked from exceeding 250 nits while in SDR mode)
        • auto-hiding the taskbar
        • having a shorter standby timer for your monitor

The device also runs a pixel refresh the first time it goes on standby after 4 hours use, and runs a full panel refresh after every 1500 hours.

        • +1

also set your wallpaper to slideshow to avoid the image remaining static for too long.

Burn in really depends on use. I used my LG OLED TV for PS4 Pro gaming for a fair while and using it for streaming for most of the time. I've got 6231 hours on it and i do get image retention a lot from the UI elements of netflix and various streaming apps but this goes away a few minutes after appearing. I don't have severe burn-in compared to what I've seen on other units but I am starting to get a slight discolouration around the centre where faces tend to be on a lot of TV shows.

The full panel refreshes definitely do seem to help, as does turning down the brightness and everything else you described. It will probably be more dominant in third person games where you character tends to occupy the same spot on the screen as opposed to first person games where you can autohide the HUD and if you can holster your gun.

I'm more curious about the rumours of LG OLED 2022 range. Supposedly there will be a 42inch model that will be more focused for gaming setups.

          • +1

@DangerNoodle: Not a rumour: uses an updated EVO panel, unfortunately it's at the same price as the 48" model to start. First sales should be $2000 AUD.

also set your wallpaper to slideshow to avoid the image remaining static for too long

            Or pure black.

            • +1

@jasswolf: pure black works well with no desktop icons. i've been tempted to try one of these quantum dot oled panels but i was too late for this one.

              • @DangerNoodle: Wait for the Samsung model or an appropriately sized LG WOLED: Dell have cooked the implementation IMO.

The Sony A95K destroys this for colour gamut and presentation despite using the same tech.

                • @jasswolf: interesting. I will wait and see then. I believe prices will go down as more competition pops up. Plus I wouldn't pay $2300 for this when I could probably get a bigger LG on sale for a similar price later in the year.

            • +1

@jasswolf: 42” = 38” ultra wide with black borders for gaming

      • +2

3 years is short for burn in honestly.

        • +1

Why? Do you think your viewing habits will suddenly change drastically after 3 years has past?

    • -1

should be fine as long as you don't pause the screen/study material too long

      • What's your opinion on what's too long?

        • +3

More than 3 years going by warranty.

      • +4

Burn in is cumulative, doesn't matter how long each time you pause or leave it on something

    • QD-OLED is a new technology, so it is unknown how it will perform over years but as stated above it comes with protection warranty.

  • +2

Looks really good overall. Something to note for some people, no HDMI 2.1 port.

    • Also looks like no USB-C?

    • +1

Yep, limitations of the Gsync Ultimate module unfortunately

    • I don't think HDMI 2.1 is THAT important on a ultrawide monitor… it's mainly for PS5/XSX who needs the bandwidth for 4k120hz, which this monitor doesn't support. DP 1.4 is good enough for PC users.

  • +9

Decent price with the coupon, horrendously inflated price without it given it has a USD $1299 MSRP.

This hasn't been fully reviewed yet, but it's looking like a good monitor, but there are some caveats:

    • text clarity isn't particularly good compared to competing QHD and UHD monitors and LG TVs, so cleartype is recommended
    • despite having hardware GSync, this apparently isn't offering ULMB or BFI, so you're dealing with sample and hold motion blur despite blazing fast response times
    • SDR colour accuracy is fine, but how the display extends into HDR is over-saturated at the top end by default
    • 10-bit colour isn't possible at max resolution and refresh rate due to the connection types used (HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4 without DSC support)
    • power consumption can peak at 200W
    • colour gamut maxes out at 99% DCI-P3, when the panel technology can support 90% Rec.2020 (this may be a limitation of the panel, or simply the way Dell have implemented it)

ABL on this isn't an issue at all for SDR content, but despite that I would wait for what Samsung deliver with this same panel tech, because it seems Dell have rushed this one a bit.

    • +4

Samsung will likely put out this panel without the Gsync Ultimate chip, so there could be a chance of HDMI 2.1

However, Samsung is unable to make competent firmware, a large reason that their G7, G9 and G9 Neo's have been a nightmare to some. The Gsync Ultimate module looks after everything with regards to HDR tonemapping as well, and given that Samsung took 4 months to make HDR usable on the G9 Neo with significant outside help, I wouldn't touch their version of this until reviews are well and truly out

      • +1

Based on all the Samsung PC monitor reviews about lack of firmware support or updates, I agree with the above sentiment. Steering clear from the company in this space until their reputation improves.

        • +1

Yep, dont buy Monitors from samsung, also avoid buying anything from them directly. They have some illegal consumer practices. Dell is way better with support and refunds and replacement. You even get an advanced replacement next day. Samsung will ask you to go through some tedious process and it will take atleast 1.5months to get anythign done including refunds. Prob even more if you dont chase them up. ACCC really needs to look into samsungs shady stuff here. You can just check reddit and a massive number of people are stuck with it.

          • -4

            @Ryxxi:

They have some illegal consumer practices.

            Examples, sources, please.

Dell is way better with support and refunds and replacement.

Given the crap efforts they pump out with product design, they kinda have to be.

          • +3

@Ryxxi: Yep, this is exactly the case. Dell's advance replacements are awesome, can sometimes even get them next day.

Took me over two months to get a replacement for my Neo G9

          • @Ryxxi: Still no source for your claims: please state where Samsung have breached consumer laws.

      • I'm yet to see anyone do better with those same Samsung/TCL panels despite opportunities to do so, those things are pushing the absolute edge of what the tech can do without upgrading the panel array. Keep in mind that with the G9 Neo, that's a panel from TCL after the handover, which would have increased the delay despite the close partnership.

I don't think the HDR issue is one of tonemapping.

Interested to see how the Samsung G8 comes up as a point of comparison.

        • I agree, the panels are the best on the market at the moment. I own the Neo G9 and there's isn't anything remotely similar. Regarding the TCL handover, to my knowledge the new CSOT panel for the G9 Neo is identical to the original in the G9, it's only the backlighting that's new. Makes sense considering the QA issues are identical, and I have both and they look the same to my eyes.

The HDR issue was largely due to the very poor EOTF curve compliance, where the screen would not give the nit value that was requested by the media, and was usually off by a few hundred nits. It was pretty much unusable, and Hardware Unboxed had to provide the technical knowledge to assist them in fixing it. Given this, I'd say they don't have the knowledge to work it out. Will be interesting to see how the Neo G8 comes

          • -2

@cille745: Hardware Unboxed are notorious for playing up drama for views, as well as having pet favourites (look up any NVIDIA/AMD comparison from them, ever). I'd suggest Samsung were aware of the issues but had to figure out how to control panel temps and performance when ramping brightness. They're well known for not acknowledging issues until they're already working on a fix and have timeframes.

I think the HDR issue here is that this panel is 120% DCI-P3 without appropriate clamp, not one of brightness. Whether it can be rectified through tonemapping is unclear.

            • @jasswolf: G9 neo does not hit 120% dci-p3. its more like 89% barely meets the vesa hdr requirement.

              • @Ryxxi: I was referring to the QD-OLED panel Dell have done the bare minimum with.

    • -2

Do not buy samsung monitors, they are crap. Samsungs policies are also sketchy when u try to get a refund. All Samsung G9 monitors have some serious flaws. Their firmware is garbage. I have had first hand expirience with them.

  • -1

Just when I moved over to a new MacBook

    • +2

      How's a new monitor a replacement for a new MacBook ?

      • -1

It’s not. MacBooks aren’t great for gaming and this monitor isn’t 4K (blurry text from Mac) and doesn’t have usb-c or thunderbolt 4. If I had a windows laptop instead then this would make a lot more sense.

  • +1

    Oohh my.

  • +1

Just called up and cancelled my original order for $2299 and ordered this for $1496.

  • Wow, thanks a lot for this deal and the 30% off tip in comments.

Just got the 38" Alienware a few days ago at my desk, will be returning now.

  • Thanks OP! Just got one, was too cheap to pass up!

  • I know I don't need it. But I got it anyway - especially with those juicy coupons…

  • +2

    HOLY MOLY

  • Thanks! I've forgotten what the specs were but got one anyway.

  • Does the variable refresh rate tech still work with an AMD card? 6700XT to be precise. They don't mention freesync anywhere on the Dell site.

    • +1

Freesync is confirmed to work, an owner of the monitor posted this yesterday over on reddit: https://imgur.com/a/QCMVBfM

    • +1

VRR should work with any of the newer Gsync Ultimate monitors these days.
I have the older AW3821DW and was able to get a 6800XT running fine.

  • It says "no coupons are available at this time"

    • +1

I generated some (and they worked) but didn't buy, so hmu if you want to try some codes.

      • +1

        Thanks I eventually received them.

      • Would love a code if you have one available!

      • Hey, i would love if you could PM me a code! I was unable to get one..

      • Hello, I am a bit late but I would like a code if you have any left! thanks a lot ^^
