  • Can these be used to extend the PS5 storage?

    • Yes, but will only be able to play PS4 games with this drive.

      • Why not PS5? Is there anything I should look out for to get it working on the PS5?

        • Need a internal M.2 ssd that's PS5 compatible.

          Why not PS5?

"Because PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra high-speed SSD"

Is there anything I should look out for to get it working on the PS5?

You need an NVMe with heatsink built in - they aren't cheap though

          • +2

@SnowDragon: Cost almost as much as the actual console

            • +2

@first in line: They'll come down eventually. Sony only started officially supporting them a few months ago so there was a rush to get compatible SSDs on the market.

              • @SnowDragon: It already has come down in price at non retailers.

Umart has the 2TB Samsung 980 Pro M.2 with heatsink for $459. And at Computer Alliance it's $499.

            • @first in line: Lol it's absurd isn't it. I wouldn't even be worrying about next-gen storage unless you're cashed up or just wait another 1-2 years or so they will become 'reasonably' priced. I refuse to pay the same as my console for storage, no matter how good it is. I'll just delete games until then :D

          • @SnowDragon: Paying $689 for that retail. You've got to be kidding.

            Cheaper at Umart at $459.

            https://www.umart.com.au/product/samsung-2tb-980-pro-pcie-4-…

And also cheaper here it's $499 but that's not as good as the Umart deal.

            https://www.computeralliance.com.au/2tb-samsung-980-pro-with…

So i hope that no one paid that exorbitant $689 retail price.

    • Just read an article about external drives for the PS5, and this drive actually showed up on the list
      https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/best-external-hard-drives…

But as noted it's only for storage; you'd have to transfer games across to the console's internal drive if you want to run it

      • So every time I want to play a game stored on the drive I will need to transfer the game over to internal console drive? Wouldn't that be a waste of time?

        • Yes well that's how Sony made it. Beats having to delete and re-download a game if (once) you run out of internal storage.
The other option Goonsack69 said before is a compatible M.2 PCIe 4 SSD that you install alongside the internal ssd of the PS5. Yes it's expensive but that's how it is atm.

  • Smr or Cmr drive?

    • $25/TB?

    • Assume SMR.

  • Anyone know if these are shuckable?

    • +3

The USB port is soldiered directly onto the internal HDD. There is no SATA port. So i wouldn't even try.

It's shown in this Youtube video of some one dissembling the 1TB drive. It's at about 1min 15secs.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGrBGK6BqZw

I believe that the only portable hard drives on the retail market which you can shuck are Seagate drives. Seagate just leaves the internal drives unmodified.

WD and Toshiba when it comes to their porable hard drive range do the soldier the USB port directly onto the internal HDD making shucking it for internal computer use as impossible.

This Seagate is same price. Any preference between the two?

    • +2

At least the Seagate can be shucked. The Toshiba drive can not be. So that's a pro instead of con over the Toshiba.

    • Is this for shucking to PS4pro?

  • "Cheaper than Amazon" - come on Amazon!

  • Ordered one yesterday.

NO idea how the Toll tracking works..

It says to be delivered today but no information about leaving depot or anything..

    • Still says delivery 11th of March..

But Toll says only shipment created..
