remember when you could get these for like $160

      • must just be me then.

        • Do you mean this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/502089

          Not sure if same model

        • +3

Nope I bought one for around that years ago.. since upgraded to a Niche Zero, but the Smart grinder served me well. probably the best electric grinder for the price.

@simulacrum: I'm the same - went from this to the Niche. The Niche (single dosing) is in a completely different league, but have kept my Breville for when I grind larger volumes of beans for cold brew.

Particle size consistency isn't brilliant on the Brev, and it does have a retention issue, but good kit for the price if you're starting out.

@simulacrum: +1: Also went from SGP (I think I paid $165) to Niche.

@caprimulgus: Same here. From memory I paid in the $160 region for the SGP. Interesting to see the price so much higher these days.

    • Yep. Bought mine some time ago. Still boxed, sitting in my garage…

      • Make a profit on eBay?

        • The moment I do that, the moment I'll want to use it, lol.

    • Yes true, but coffee machines and grinders prices gone up and still going up, eg Breville Bambino plus was $361 at TGGC, now it's $500, many other models follow suite, so these old good days are gone unfortunately. Retailer do not offer much discounts these days too due to less stock, supply, pandemic, container shipping price, petrol price, higher inflation all over the world, China, now Ukraine, etc.

      • so sad, TGGC coffee machine prices are so jacked it's even more expensive than retailers….. i managed to grab the bambino plus last year, should've grabbed the grinder as well…

    • Yep, I bought the same model from Amazon for $168 in 2019. I've been using it 1-2 times every day and it's still going strong.

  • Same price as Amazon with cashback. I'm waiting for it to hit <$220

Pros: Decently quick domestic grinder for Aeropress, French Press, filter.

Cons: Will frustrate you if trying to pair with a decent espresso machine. A slightly cheaper hand grinder will give you more accurate results for filter.

    • My BCG820BSS pairs very nicely indeed with my dual boiler BES920SS. Oh and to the coffee - the last shot I had, with some fresh Lime Blue beans, was sensational…

    • It paired nicely with my Rancilio Silvia and kept me happy for many years. Not in the same class as my Niche Zero, but pretty good for the price..

  • I got mine as a refurbished open box from a Breville outlet store for this price. Mine died right on 2 years. I did think at the time as long as it lasts two years at that price I wasn't going to be too unhappy. Unfortunately I haven't seen them at a decent price since. Genuinely thinking of just going up to the Oracle at this point.

    • I got one for my brother through GG commercial in late December for $218 which is the best price I have seen for a while.

(Currently $275 on GG commercial channel)

      • I need to see what happens with our Barista Express. We've had it for quite a long time. Must be going on 8 years now. I think if it breaks we will seriously consider moving up a level or two.

    • I would be careful to buy Oracle, it is convenient easy machine to operate and produce good coffee, but its grinder is the weakest point and lack of manual tamp could be an issue to get consistent shot due to channelling. Then your $2350 investment is gone as you have 2 in 1 machine so can't upgrade one of them later on.

      • I'd only get it if I can get it at those crazy prices that approach the higher end machines + manual grinder. I'll look at all the options including possibly importing stuff.

  • Pretty good for espresso (except for a bit crumping), not so much for filter

  • Already gone? Lol

  • Which make/model is better than this one? Any Italian made? Bratza, Delonghi, Smeg?

    • +1

People on Reddit rave about the Baratza Encore which is also ~$250

    • everyone has their opinions, but I upgraded from this to the Sette and am totally happy.

I have this on the finest settings in burr and normal knob and still not fine enough? Is that for all of these or is there something I am missing. I took out the burr inside and turned it to the finest, and have knob set to 1. Still runs out too fast in the Breville esperesso machine.

    • Did you adjust the upper burrs finer too? That is strange, normally that will fix it. Did you try to increase coffee dose to slow down the extraction and tamp harder? The other issue if beans are stale you tend to need to go finer, so try fresh beans too.

      • How do you adjust the other burr? I only adjusted one.

        • You can adjust the upper burr not sure if you already done that? few on youtube adjust upper burr Breville grinder
Edit: If you already adjusted the upper burr and already at the finest dial, then you can't do much, Is your grinder too old? The only thing is to replace the burrs, not sure how much to buy them. As I said try to increase dose, will help to slow down flow.

          • @huntabargain: Thanks, I did not know about the upper one. I will look into it, and the machine is brand new.

          • @huntabargain: Thanks again for the help. Just checked and yes I have done that one, I was perhaps confusing the upper and lower, I adjusted the one in the video already although they call it the upper burr it sits below the other one (?). I am not sure if I can adjust the other one but the whole thing, being brand new, is disappointing given I love the beans we buy. It is borderline usable at the finest setting, and I would expect it should go a lot finer. I should not have to overload it and tamp super hard but yes that is what I am doing also. I was using an electric herb grinder before this and had to be careful not to go too fine for fear of clogging it.

            • @gdozbargain: If the grinder is almost new and within warranty, I would contact Breville for support / inspect / repair. Just make sure there is no issue with your coffee machine tho (which model is your machine?) You can also have some idea if there is something wrong with the grinder by feeling the ground coffee and see how fine it comes out.
BTW, are you using the single walled double shot basket and how many gram of coffee are you using?
