*For life of the hosting company

I remember mbox from late 90s
Lost all my email when their lifetime ended without much notice

    • +3

Yep, not many providers hang around 20+ years.

If you truly need lifetime, best to run your own storage or pay a small fee regularly for reputable (dare I say it, OneDrive/O365).

Please read this review and the resulting comments afterwards before jumping on this deal, personally I'd steer clear of them.

VERY TRUE - Be sure to read the reviews on this.

It looks like they regularly terminate (without refund) accounts on the grounds that some stored file infringes copyright. Even a single MP3 file in a folder or a ripped video file of your own wedding seems to be enough for them to issue a two week termination notice, regardless of whether you have actually infringed copyright or not. This is after they claim to have no access to your encrypted files.

Other people have reported the file sync app barely works and is effectively useless.

Avoid these guys. Wouldn't be surprised if they closed doors suddenly in the future under the weight of negative reviews and lifetime subscribers paying no regular amount.

Sounds like its going to be similar to OneDrive……first they'll give you a tonne of storage for free, until they realise its costing them through the nose and the things people are uploading, then they'll give you a deadline to reduce your storage to something they're more comfortable with. Plus, never heard of this service before, so hard pass for me.

Just did a search on Google for 'degoo' and one of the things that came up was:

    Is Degoo safe and legit?
Degoo is a complete scam, your files are not safe. They have sent emails to many people that they have scanned files and find some content infringing copyright. A few files were listed. They threatened to terminate my account if the were files not removed (these files did not even exist on my computer).

Im not sure how accurate the above is, but not taking my chances.

But it’s 97.25% off normal price. What could possibly go wrong!? (Sarcasm)

  • +1

    Wish apple offered this deal

  • +2

Lol, there’s zero chance a company can have a sustainable business model and offer 10TB for a “lifetime” for any price, but especially $99 US.

I wouldn’t trust this at all. No deal.

Degoo are Swedish, not a dodgy Chinese spyware company but the reviews are still pretty scathing. At least this post prompted me to look up what the latest alternatives there are to Google Drive, OneDrive and iCloud.

    • At least this post prompted me to look up what the latest alternatives there are to Google Drive, OneDrive and iCloud.

      Did you find anything good?

    • +6

Yeah, anything Chinese has to be dodgy and anything Swedish must be great, despite scathing reviews.

      • +2

Swedes are genetically incapable of being dodgy

      • You're right. That was casual racism. Forgive me.

    • +1

because Google is a non-dodgy spyware company

  • not a deal, lifetime storage is never real unfortunately :(

edit: koofr.eu is a really good alternative to the normal gdrive, onedrive, etc.., they have pretty cheap yearly plans

I made the mistake and bought 3 "lifetime" offers like this on StackSocial..
    1 vpn
    1 storage
    1 service (CRM website)
guess what? None of those honored their plans. I`d stay out of it.

    • My Getflix still works (5 years now … https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/241229) … but no longer in it's original form for Netflix … just as a VPN now. Still works fine for me.

    • Managed to get CyberGhost on SS. Still working like a charm years later. I think it depends on the company.

    • I bought Windscribe VPN on a lifetime plan. So far so good. It has been about 3 years so far.

  • +4

Should be common sense, "lifetime" storage for a third of the price of a 10TB drive and there are zero repercussions if they shut up shop in 12 months or change the rules all of a sudden.

For anyone who thinks this is a great deal, I have a fantastic bridge for sale.

  • +1

    I gotta say… for $40 I'm tempted.
    im such an idiot haha

  • +1

Companies usually do this as they are in the financial red, do a quick fire sale to get back in the green and then shut up shop or sell the business to someone else.
    too risky

  • I wouldn't trust putting any kind of sensitive data in a random cloud provider anyway.

  • Well, you get what you pay for.

  • If it were a two year plan it might be legit, and competitive!

But for "lifetime" it will probably last less than 2 years … if that

  • Might still get this … 10TB would be great to backup all my images (when it lasts 2 years I am happy … when longer even better). I have the data on 2 NAS systems (one acts as backup) and this would be a great offsite backup. It's just when it stops and my backup and primary source fails I would have an issue - so pretty low risk (as I hope I get at least a week notice). On the other side it will be hard to use the data as the service is pretty slow when you look at reviews - esp. when it goes under it will be hard to recover the data. The lifetime deal was available for a similar price 3 years ago.

Guess it depends on the data you put on there … wouldn't trust this as my only backup and it's super slow. So definitely be aware of this. There is always a risk that they just do a firesale to survive.

There is also a 2 pack account deal: https://stacksocial.com/sales/the-degoo-premium-lifetime-bac… and accounts up to 50TB https://stacksocial.com/sales/degoo-premium-mega-backup-life…

But looking at historic storage prices a lifetime deal is not impossible. Just depends on how prices of storage in the future: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/6485

when it lasts 2 years I am happy

      Good luck with that.

  • I still say, despite my posting this, that Office 365 family plan is the cheapest and safest cloud storage option and you don’t need to use Office for it to be economical.
